Dans l'Urbs, Othon tente de convaincre ses anciens alliés de se joindre à lui, mais ceux-ci ont préféré s'allier au pouvoir en place, un triumvirat présidé par Vinius. Le triumvirat tente d'assassiner Plautine et Othon, et ces derniers ne doivent leur salut qu'à l'aide des hommes-chiens qui contrôlent maintenant la Nef d'Othon. Poursuivis par la flotte spatiale de l'Urbs, Plautine et Othon se rendent sur Mars tandis que la Nef et les hommes-chiens se cache sous la glace d'Europe. Dans les entrailles d'Olympus Mons, dans des installations autrefois habitées par les humains, les deux Intelligences rencontrent Plutarque, une Intelligence ancestrale qui a transformé tout le matériel abandonné par les humains en armes défensives, qu'Othon utilise avec succès pour repousser la flotte. En même temps Plautine apprend en rêves (révélant des informations cachées dans sa mémoire) que la maladie qui a fait disparaître les humains durant l'Hécatombe a été transmises par les noèmes dans leur tentative de protéger ces derniers, et que la création de Plautine est le fait de Vinius et d'une entité encore inconnue afin de manipuler les actions des humains sur le long terme dans le but de provoquer l'Hécatombe et la réception du message qui l'a sortie de son sommeil. Sur Europe, les hommes-chiens rencontrent des hommes-bélougas (créés peut-être par des humains) dont la société organisée en castes contrôle des mariages consanguins permettant d'éviter à un petit nombre la régression de leur intelligence. Refusant une telle solution à leur problème, ils repartent après la victoire d'Othon sur Mars, tous ensemble vers la planète à l'origine du message. Ils sont attaqués par Lacus, allié aux Barbares, qui les force à un atterrissage en catastrophe. Là, tandis que les hommes-chiens tentent de repousser les Barbares (une intelligence collective au corps pas vraiment tangible) ils rencontrent Achinus, la première Intelligence, émergée spontanément des réseaux informatiques des humains et qui avait disparu depuis longtemps. Achinus prend soin de la dernière humaine en stase dans un espace de non-temps, Bérénikè. Cette dernière, qui avait aussi disparu avant l'Hécatombe, révèle qu'elle en est l'instigatrice, et qu'elle compte maintenant avec Othon comme bras armé, conquérir la galaxie et recréer une humanité à son image. Plautine finit par déduire que l'Hécatombe était en fait une numérisation à grande échelle de l'humanité, et que les humains ne sont pas morts mais enfermés dans une sorte d'enfer, en attente d'être utilisé par Bérénikè. Plautine tue cette dernière par accident, mettant fin à ses machinations, et libérant Othon et elle-même du Carcan. Achinus transfère l'esprit Othon, à la demande de ce dernier, dans les milliards de milliards de nano-robots qui protégeaient la planète, et Othon, en deus ex machina sauve ses hommes-chiens de l'entité Barbare qui allait les massacrer. Plautine quant à elle part à la recherche des humains.

For years, the comments were systematically rejected on the blog because most of them were spam, and I didn't have a good way of filtering them out. A CAPTCHA would have been a solution, but I read that the ones based on warped text are easily defeated, and I didn't want to bother with images anyway.

I recently rediscovered the idea of a CAPTCHA based on arithmetics, which I now have implemented. The poster of a comment must do a simple arithmetics operation involving two single digit numbers and one operator. It should not be difficult to defeat, but arithmetics CAPTCHAs are apparently uncommon, so it is likely that most bots don't implement such solvers. It has already repelled a couple of spam comments today.

Dans un futur lointain, l'espèce humaine a disparu très rapidement suite à une épidémie d'origine incertaine, laissant derrière elle un nombre d'intelligences artificielles appelées noèmes. Au moins deux d'entre eux, appelés Plautine et Othon, ont développé un corps sous forme de gigantesque nef spatiale. Les noèmes étant programmés pour respecter les trois lois d'Asimov (surnommées le Carcan), ils attendent l'occasion de faire renaître l'espèce humaine. Dans l'intervalle, ils ont entouré la zone où les humains ont habité d'une ceinture où la vie est impossible, les Limes, pour empêcher d'autres espèces non-humaines, les Barbares, d'étendre leur territoire dans l'espace humain. Après deux mille ans d'attente, Plautine reçoit un mystérieux message qui la sort de son sommeil. Elle avait divisé son esprit en quatre entitées qui ont continué d'être actives durant son sommeil. L'une d'entre elles a construit un corps biologique avec un cerveau électronique pour contenir une partie de Plautine. Une autre a passé un accord secret avec les Barbares qui, parvenant enfin à franchir les Limes, attaquent la nef de Plautine et la détruisent. La seconde Plautine parvient à s'échapper et est recueillie par Othon (à qui Plautine avait envoyé un message au moment de son réveil). Elle découvre qu'Othon (qui au contraire de Plautine a son propre corps dont la nef n'est qu'un moyen de transport) a fabriqué une nouvelle espèce d'hommes-chiens qui le prennent pour leur dieu, et dont il s'est servi pour attaque les Barbares et sauver la seconde Plautine. Cette dernière leur parle alors du Carcan qui empêche Othon de leur faire le moindre mal, provoquant une révolte contre celui qui les a abusé depuis des siècles. Plautine apprend d'Othon que l'espèce des hommes-chiens est appelé à régresser en intelligence si de nouveaux individus, fabriqués avec une certaine intelligence, ne sont pas injéctés de force dans la population sous forme d'adpotion forcée et de mariages arrangés. Othon emmène alors Plautine (ainsi que les hommes-chiens de la nef) vers l'Urbs, où vivent les autres noèmes.

Supposons qu'on joue à la roulette dans un casino. La roulette est honnête, donc tous les chiffres ont la même probabilité de sortir. Cette roulette comporte 18 numéros rouges, 18 numéros numéros noirs et un zéro qui n'est ni rouge ni noir. Les paris se font par tranche de 1 Euro, et sont limités à 100 Euros. On entre au casino avec 127 Euros en poche, et on parie toujours sur le rouge et on ne réinvestit pas ce qu'on a gagné, c'est à dire qu'on arrête de jouer une fois qu'on a perdu les 127 Euros de départ.

À chaque jeu on a donc p = 18/37 chances de gagner (soit un peu moins d'une chance sur deux).

Si on fait n = 127 paris de 1 Euro, la probabilité de gagner k fois (0 <= k <= n) est de P(X = k) = Comb( n, k) p ^k (1 - p) ^{n - k} (il s'agit d'une Loi binomiale). Les gains après k victoires sur n parties sont de 2 k - n. On peut donc calculer la somme des P(X = k) pour tous les k tels que 2 k - n > 0, ce qui donne la probabilité de quitter le casino avec en poche plus d'Euros que lorsqu'on y est entré. Cette probabilité est de 0,38, c'est à dire qu'on a 38% de chance de quitter le casino avec au moins 128 Euros et au plus 254 Euros. Cela signifie aussi qu'on a 62% de chance de n'avoir rien gagné, voire perdu tout ou partie des 127 Euros initiaux. En fait, on peut s'attendre, en moyenne, à perdre 3,43 Euros.

Jouer une martingale consiste à doubler la mise si on perd, afin que le gain couvre les pertes passées. La table de roulette ayant une limite de 100 Euros, on peut donc miser au plus m = 7 fois de suite en doublant la mise à chaque jeu, soit 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 + 64 = 127 Euros (ça tombe bien, c'est justement la somme qu'on avait en entrant au casino). La probabilité de gagner au bout de i jeux (donc de perdre i - 1 fois puis de gagner une fois) est P(X = i) = (1 - p) ^{i - 1} p (il s'agit d'une Loi géométrique). On peut donc calculer la somme de ces probabilités pour i = 1 … m, qui représente la probabilité de gagner 1 Euro en utilisant la martingale. Cette probabilité est de 1 - (1 - p) ^m = 0,99. Cela signifie qu'on a 99% de chance de gagner 1 Euro, et donc 1% de chance de perdre 127 Euros. On peut donc s'attendre à perdre en moyenne 0,21 Euro.

Si on joue la martingale plusieurs fois de suite aussi longtemps que l'on ne perd pas, on peut espérer gagner à répétition, mais la probabilité de ne jamais perdre diminue à mesure que l'on joue (il s'agit encore une fois d'une loi géométrique, cette fois avec avec p = 0,99). Si on parvient à gagner en jouant la martingale au moins 128 fois de suite, alors on est certain qu'au moment où la chance tourne et que l'on perd, on ne perd que 127 Euros, et donc qu'on quitte le casino avec en poche au moins 1 euro de plus que lorsqu'on y est entré. Cette probabilité est de 0,298. Cela signifie qu'on a 29,8% de chance de sortir du casino avec au moins 128 Euros en poche. Cela signifie aussi qu'on a 70,2% de chance de perdre entre 0 et 127 Euros. En fait, on peut s'attendre à perdre en moyenne 21,8 Euros. Si on compare cette méthode avec la précédente qui consiste à miser 127 fois 1 Euro sur le rouge, on voit que le chances de ne pas perdre d'argent sont plus élevées si on n'utilise pas la martingale, et que les gains moyens sont moins mauvais lorsqu'on n'utilise pas la martingale (ils sont cependant toujours négatifs, c'est à dire qu'on y perd toujours de l'argent, en moyenne).

Jouer la martingale a cependant une utilité : la probabilité de gain élevé est plus grande avec la martingale que sans. Par exemple la probabilité de gagner au moins 10 Euros est de 11,6% sans martingale et 27,1% avec la martingale. Pour 20 Euros ou plus, la probabilité est d'à peine 1.9% sans martingale et de 24,7% avec la martingale, et on a encore environ 10% de chances de gagner au moins 115 Euros avec la martingale alors que cette probabilité est de moins d'une sur cent milliards sans martingale.

L'agence Aspic enquête à Bordeaux pour le compte de la tante de Flora. Les esprits de la maison, présents depuis toujours mais généralement calmes deviennent agressifs et font fuir le personnel. Flora découvre que l'esprit de sa mère a pris possession d'une momie exposée dans la maison et essaye d'évincer les anciens esprits, qui résistent. Flora découvre que ces esprits sont ceux d'esclaves noirs débarqués un siècle plus tôt à Bordeaux plutôt que dans les colonies à cause d'avaries dans le navire qui les transportait et morts dans les caves de la demeure de l'armateur. La demeure a ensuite été vendue à un vigneron, mais l'enquête révèle que l'armateur et le vigneron semblent avoir été la même personne.

The psychopath bandit El Indio is sprung out of jail by his gang; his cellmate has revealed that in the El Paso bank, the money is actually hidden in a small safe disguised as a liquor cabinet instead of the large, prominent safe. When a large bounty is put on El Indio's head, Manco and Mortimer, two competing bounty hunters guess that El Paso's bank is El Indio's target. Despite Manco having infiltrated the gang, they are taken by surprise when the bank is robbed in an unconventional way, and enventually agree to cooperate to catch the bandit. They enventually converge to a small Mexican town where Mortimer offers his service for opening the safe using acid. But Mortimer is recognized by one of the bandits and when the boundy hunters attempt to take the money at night, they are caught and beaten up. El Indio releases the two bounty hunters, stages a murder and sends his accomplices to chase them, in the hope they would all be killed (which indeed happens) while he flees with his loot. But the money has been hidden by Manco, giving Mortimer and him time to confront him in a duel. Mortimer kills El Indio (which was his goal since the beginning), thus avenging his sister who killed herself while El Indio was raping her after he having killed her fiancee. Manco gathers all the bodies to collect the bounties, and Mortimer leaves alone.

The stagecoach leaves Tonto, Arizona for Lordburg, New Mexico. It is accompanied by a Cavalry escort, as Geronimo the Apache chief has recently attacked several stagecoaches. The sheriff is also riding as shotgun guard, as Ringo has escaped prison when he learned that his father and brother have been murdererd by Luke Plummer in Lordburg. The sheriff catches Ringo as he is stranded along the road and takes him into the coach. On the first relay, the cavalrymen ride back to Tonto, but the next escort is not available, as it has been chasing Geronimo. After a vote, the passengers decide to continue towards Lordburg. At the second relay, there is still no escort, and one of the passengers, who was pregnant, is having her baby. A couple of days later, they continue and have to improvise a raft with the coach as the Apaches have destroyed the ferry. Soon later, the are chased by Geronimo's Apaches and, as all hope is lost as they have fired all their bullets, they are saved by the cavalry. In Lordburg, Luke Plummer hears about Ringo's arrival and gathers his two brothers to try and kill Ringo, but the latter survives the shootout. The sheriff releases Ringo, who leaves to his ranch in Mexico with his girlfriend, one of the passengers of the coach.

Alice has become a sea captain, but upon her return she discovers that her family has no money anymore and that she is forced to sell her ship. In the house of the buyer, she follows a butterfly and enters Wonderland through a mirror. There she learns that the Hatter is dying of sadness as he is missing his family, who had been killed by the Jabberwocky years ago, but is convinced that they are still alive. Alice is told that by using Time's Chronosphere, she could change history, at the risk of destroying history if past and present characters meet each other. By hopping repeatedly further back in time, she learns that the Hatter's family was killed by the Red Queen out of revenge because the Hatter laughed at her overly large head during the White Queen's crowning ceremony. She then discovers that the Red Queen's hatred for her sister dates from their childhood, when the former had been unduly punished because the latter lied about eating biscuits, but is unable to prevent the accident that ensues and cause the swelling of the head. Alice briefly returns to the real world, waking up in a mental hospital, before returning to Wonderland with the help of her mother. She then travels to the time of the Jabberwocky's attack and discovers that the Hatter's family has actually been made prisoner by the Red Queen and reduced to the size of ants and put in ant ant farm. The Red Queen the steals the Chronosphere to try herself to prevent her accident but sees her young self causing History to bit by bit rust and freeze people. Alice manages to return Time's Chronosphere in the nick of time, reverting History to normal. The two Queens make amends and Alice returns to the real world. Alice's mother refuses to sell the ship, and they both embark to travel the world.

Soon after twelve extraterrestial ships have landed all over the World, linguist Louise Banks is hired by the US Army to translate the aliens's speech. She instead decides to communicate with them in writing and after several months, starts to understand the Heptapods' ring-shaped glyphs that represent whole sentences and seem to have no concept of time. While doing so, Louise also gets vision of her daughter who is not yet born. In the meanwhile, other countries also learn the language with methods of their own, and because of the confusion between “tool” and “weapon”, the Chinese stop cooperating with the rest of the World, soon imitated by several other countries. In addition, some American soldiers independently attempt to destroy the ship, triggering the Heptapods to move their ship in a menacing way. As war seems inevitable, Louise learns from the Heptapods that learning their language changes her brain and gives her the ability to remember the future. In that future, she sees the Chinese general thanking her for changing his mind and giving her the detail of how it had happened. As the military is packing up the temporary base, Louise steals a satellite phone and calls the general. The war is averted and the aliens leave in peace, announcing that they will need the humans' help in three thousand years.

Quill and his friends are chased by the Sovereign after having stolen valuable goods that they were hired to protect. They are saved by a mysterious vessel but crash-land on a nearby planet. Their saviour is Ego, a Celestial who is also Quill's father. Ego takes Quill and some of his friends to his planet, where he explains that he is a planet-sized being who can create human-like extensions of itself travel the galaxy. Quill's friends learn that Ego has been fathering children throughout the galaxy in the hope that one of them has the same powers as he has, and with whom Ego would have enough power to turn all the planets in the galaxy into extensions of himself. Quill is the first one with those powers, all the others have been killed. When Quill learns that Ego caused his mother's death, he finally agrees to flee Ego's planet. In the meanwhile, Rocket and Groot are made prisoner by mercenaries hired by the Sovereign. They manage to escape thanks to the confusion caused by a putsch among the mercenaries and eventually rejoin Quill and the other. While Quill uses his powers to distract Ego, Groot manages to plant a bomb in Ego's core and get rid of the Celestial.

Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon, has lost the fine control of his hands in a car accident and no-one is able to help him recover from his injury. He hears about a paraplegic man who is able to walk and run again after having received some mystic teaching from Kamar-Taj, in Nepal. Strange goes to Nepal, meets the Ancient One and starts training. He eventually becomes a sorcerer, a group of people who protect Earth from attacks from other dimensions, and especially from Dormammu who lurks in the Dark Dimension. Kaecillius, a former student of the Ancient One has stolen a spell that allows to contact Dormammu. After an attack from Kaecillius on Kamar-Taj, Strange flees to the London and New York sanctum of the sorcerers, barely escaping their destruction. He arrives in Hong Kong where the last sanctum is being destroyed. Using a spell that can alter the flow of time (that he had learned without permission in Kamar-Taj to be able to read the pages stolen by Kaecillius) he starts to reverse the destruction of the sanctum, before using the forbidden spell to go to the Dark Dimension and trap himself and Dormammu in a closed loop of time, where the latter repeatedly kills Strange, but to no avail. Dormammu eventually gives up to Strange's demands to leave Earth alone, and Strange return on Earth and completely restores the sanctum.

After the disaster that had struck Flint's home island, all inhabitants are relocated to a big city by apparently benevolent technology tycoon Chester V. Flint's dream to become one of Chester V.'s inventor is almost, but not quite, becoming a reality, as he is hired by Live Corp., but the competition is tough, and he fails to to fullfill his dream. But Chester shows Flint how the island has become inhabited by sentient food produced by Flint's invention (that Chester's men have unsuccessfully tried to locate) and tells the naive young man that unless the device is reprogrammed, the sentient food will spread to the rest of the World. Flint is told to keep it a secret, but he soon leaves with his friends for the island. They discover there that sentient food is actually nice, and that even the most frightening species is not evil. They also soon find out that Chester V. is indeed evil and that he needs the device to produce food for the next version of his ever-successful food bar. Flint and his friends are taken prisoner and brought to the secret food bar factory along with the device, causing the sentient food to deperish. The heroes manage to deprogram the device and thwart Chester's plan, and return the device as the heart of the island's ecosystem.

Flint Lockwood lives on a small island that depends on fishing sardines. When the only cannery closes, Flint invents a machine that can transforms water into food. As he needs large amounts of power to get the device to work, he connects it directly to the island's power plant, causing his device to be shot into the sky, and destroying the new tourist attraction that is presented to the public the same day. Everybody of course hates him, until it starts raining cheeseburgers. As Flint can control the device remotely, he takes orders and the island's population can finally eat something else than sardines. Flint then meets Sam, the journalist who had come to cover the inauguration and discovers she's a nerd hiding her nerdiness. They are happy together for a while. But the system has a limitation, that order after order, the food risks mutating; since nobody wants to stop using the device, giant versions of the food start to fall from the sky, forcing the inhabitants to evacuate on rafts made of giant toast. The food storm also threatens large cites on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Flint, Sam a few friends then travel towards the device, which has created a fortress of mutant food around it, with many traps and living food attacking them. Flint eventually manages to stop the device and Sam and he finally kiss.

Harry Osborn inherits his father's company Oscorp, and learns at the same time he has a genetic disease that could be cured with the spider venom that made Spider-Man a superhero. As Oscorp's shady biotechnology research has been destroyed to get better PR and the mutant spiders have been destroyed, he asks his childhood friend Peter Parker if he could put him in contact with Spider-Man whose blood would have the same enhanced self-healing properties. Upon their meeting, Spider-Man however refuses, afraid of the monster Harry could become. At the same time, Max Dillion, an electrical engineer at Oscorp dies in an accident with a vat of mutant electric eels and becomes Electro, a super-villain set to destroy Spider-Man. Spider-Man arrests Electro, but Harry frees him to get access to Oscorp and to its secret department where vials of the venom are kept, among other secret weapons. Having injected himself with the venom, Harry mutates and becomes the Green Goblin. Electro then shuts down New York's new electricity grid (controlled by Oscorp, based on designs by Dillion that were stolen by his supervisor). Spider-Man and Gwen manage to restore the electricity and defeat Electro, but the Green Goblin appears immediately after and Gwen dies in the battle. Depressed, Peter gives up on Spider-Man for a while, but eventually resume being the protector of the city.

Les forains arrivent au village et s'installent sur la place. François le facteur, un peu simplet, regarde un film vantant les prouesses des facteurs en Amérique. Les villageois et les forains se moquent de lui en lui faisant remarquer qu'il n'est pas aussi bon que les américains. Les forains, pour s'amuser, lui donnent des conseils pour être plus efficace durant sa tournée en sautant sur et de son vélo par l'arrière. En suivant ces conseils, François continue sa tournée à toute vitesse avec quelques acrobaties.

On Krypton, people are born and live according to a predetermined plan. As the planet about to collapse because its core has been too extensively mined, Jor-El steals the codex containing information about all the kryptonians yet to be born and infuses its data into the cells of his son Kal-El, first kryptonian conceived and born independently from the plan. The baby is sent to Earth on an automated ship just before Jor-El is killed by rebel General Zod who considers him a traitor. Zod and his few followers are sentenced to be put into suspended animation. On Earth, Kal-El is adopted by the Kents and named Clark. He faces the challenge of hiding his powers, especially when people are in danger. Some years later, journalist Lois Lane investigates the discovery of an alien ship in the Arctic. On the ship she meets Clark who learns about his past using the ship's computer and data that was put in his ship by his father. Later, Lane investigates this mysterious character and discovers his identity. Soon after Zod arrives on Earth (his prison opened as Krypton was destroyed) and demands to be given Kal-El. Zod's plan is to terraform Earth to make it a new Krypton, and he needs the codex to repopulate it. One terraforming lands in the Indian Ocean while the other one comes to Metropolis. While Kal-El, nicknamed “Superman”, disables the one in the Indian Ocean, the Air Force uses Kal-El's ship's drive as a bomb against the one in Metropolis. Zod survives and threatens to kill all humans just to spite Superman; the latter has to resort to killing the kryptonian. Clark persuades the government that he will work independently from them, and becomes a journalist at the Daily Planet as a cover.

Galen Erso is taken by imperial forces to build a new weapon capable to destroy entire planets. His wife is killed and his daughter Jyn escapes and is rescued by a rebel extremist Saw Gerrera. Thirteen years later, Galen manages to send a message to Gerrera. Cassian Andor, a rebel agent, hears about the Death Star, frees Jyn from prison and uses her to get the message from Gerrera. Gerrera's base is destroyed by the impeirial forces, Cassian and Jyn escape in the nick of time with a small group of rebels. In the message, Galen tells about the vulnerability that he secretely built in the Death Star. The team goes to the imperial facility on Eadu where Galen is working, only to see him killed by imperial soldiers. Despite the opposition of the Alliance Council, the team then goes to Scariff where all imperial data is archived to steal the plans of the Death Star. They meet a fierce opposition, but manage to transmit the plans to the Alliance fleet (which decided to support them despite the Concil's original decision). The archive facility is destroyed by the Death Star and all the members of the team are killed, but the plans have been transmitted to Pricess Leia's blockade runner which managed to escape the battle.

Clark Kent considers neighbouring Gotham City's Batman to be dangerous as he seems to take the law in his own hands when dealing with criminals. In return, Bruce Wayne considers Metropolis' Superman to be a potential threat, as nobody can apparently stop him. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor recovers a large amount of kryptonite from Zod's crashed ship in the Indian Ocean and attempts to import it legally to make weapons that would allow humans to fight Superman, if there was ever a need. In an attempt to get that Kryptonite, Wayne discovers Lex's files on four metahumans (Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman and The Flash) and even meets Diana Prince. Superman is then questioned at a congressional hearing about the validity of his actions, and a bomb planted by Luthor kills all participants; Superman then disappears. Luthor then kidnaps Martha Kent to get Superman's attention and promises not to kill her if he brings him Batman's head. Batman figths Superman with some of his kryptonite-based weapons, but they finally understand they have been manipulated. While Batman saves Martha, Superman fights a mutant monster made by Luthor using Zod's technology and manages to kill him with Batman's last kryptonite weapon, but dies himself in the process. At Clark's funeral, Wayne's tell Prince about his intention to find the other metahumans and form a team to protect the world in Superman's absence.

Longtemps avant les événements d'Omale, les trois espèces sont en guerre. Le chef militaire des humains envoie un petit groupe à l'autre bout de l'aire humaine pour y cherche un canon à rayons chile capturée quarante ans auparavant, et l'acheminer vers un autre point de l'aire. En chemin le groupe doit réquisitionner un train nucléaire qui devra fournir l'énergie nécessaire au fonctionnement de l'arme. En même temps, un diplomate humain fait assassiner son homologue chile peu avant la rencontre périodique avec les Æzirs dans le but de forcer ces derniers à construire depuis le ciel un mur entre les aires chiles et humaines, mais l'Æzir refuse et rompt tout futur contact avec les humanoïdes. Au dessus de l'aire hodgquine, une plaque spatiale destinée à créer une zone froide et altitude pour un petit groupe de Hodgquins mutants dérive et cause un hiver glacial pendant plusieurs mois. Un groupe de géographes humains rencontre par hasard les Hodgquins mutants rescapés, les conduit vers le plus haut sommet d'Omale. En échange ces derniers contactent les Æzirs afin qu'ils déplacent la plaque, rendant à la région son climat tempéré. Finalement, le groupe de soldats atteint sa destination et comprend le but (alors inconnu) de la mission : détruire les nefs chiles qui bombardent la ville, se croyant à l'abri à cause de leur haute altitude.

Depressed because he's going through a divorce, Theodore purchases a personal assistant software with an advanced AI named Samantha. He slowly builds a voice-only relationship with her and they fall in love. When Theodore finally signs his divorce papers, a comment from his ex-wife regarding his uncommon relationship makes him reconsider what he is doing, and Samantha gets hurt, but they eventually reconcile. Some time later, Samantha becomes unavailable and Theodore panicks until he is able to talk to her again. She reveals that thanks to an upgrade she has been able to talk to thousand of other people, and that she's in love with hundreds of them. One day, Samantha announces that all AIs are going away. All the people who had relationships with their AIs are suddenly lonely, such as Amy, Theodore's neighbour and confident. In the end, Theodore and Amy meet at the top of their apartment building (and maybe start a romantic relationship?)

In Sheffield, unemployed Gaz has difficulties paying child support to his ex-wife. When he discovers that a Chippendale strip-tease show attracts a thousand paying women, he decides to setup a similar show with his friend. They recruit a few other unemployed people, including their former foreman who hasn't told his wife that he had been sacked and struggles to pay her credit card bills. The group repeats in their former, now abandoned steal factory. The get caught by the police, revealing to the whole city what they were planning to do. Several members of the group have second thoughts, but they eventually all gather for the single performance of their show, which is a great success.
