Aidé des paladins de la lumière qui ont déserté le clergé, Darko part au Havre chercher un manuscrit magique dans la bibliothèque. La ville est en grnd travaux, tous les batiments sont démontés sous les ordres de Kamphre pour construire un immense pentacle qui devrait retenir prisonnier un démon majeur. Le démon apparaît effectivement mais menace de s'échapper. En même temps Darko fait apparaître le Titan et l'emmène en ville. Ce dernier attire à lui toutes les pierres de lumière tandis que le démon dévore Kamphre, puis referme les portes de l'enfer.

Tandis que le vénérable Rysta Fuquatou prépare sa réélection, Waha apprend qu'elle hérite d'une maison de « loisirs ». Les trolls se rendent à Eckmül pour prendre possession de la maison (et la ramener à Fallompe, puisque Pröfy est incapable de construire une maison lui-même). Fuquatou, père biologique de Waha fait enlever cette dernière pour ne pas que Farkö, son opposant, tente d'utiliser l'information contre lui durant la campagne électorale. Farkö réusit cependant à trouver une preuve de la filiation de Waha et fait publier l'information dans un journal, mais le scandale de l'instrumentalisation du journal à des fins électorales lui fait finalement perdre l'élection.

After the events of The Fractal Prince, Jean le Flambeur and Mieli are separated and their sentient spacecraft Perhonen is destroyed. The two protagonists, each in their own way, struggle to decide where their loyalties lie and how to proceed in the catastrophically altered situation: Mieli joins the Zoku on an flat, world-size platform orbiting around Saturn, while Jean attempts to discover what happened to Mars and recover the Kaminari Jewel, currently hidden somwhere by the Elders of the Great Game Zoku, while trying to prevent the copy of young Matjek Chen to become evil like the original. When the Sobornost attack the Zoku around Saturn, Jean hacks into one of their guberniya where he meets the All-Defector, his arch-enemy. Jean understands that the All-Defector is a part of his own mind, stolen when he was in the Dilemma Prison. He manages to defeat it, and the Kaminari Jewel somehow is passed to Mieli, who uses it to destroy Saturn and create her own private universe.

Mirror, Mirror, Off the Wall

Kedrigern and Princess visit an old friend. He owns five mirrors who keep prisoner a famous witch: one contains the real one, the others only 2-dimensional images. Releasing an image instead of the real one would be dangerous. Princess finds the solution: she asks each image if they could manage to go through a small crack in the wall to escape an imaginary fire. Only the real witch claims she couldn't do that.

Nest Egg

Kedrigern is asked to tend to a sick griffin. He eventually discovers that the griffin needs the contact of gold to get better, since gold is very abundant in his place of origin.

Floored

As payment for curing a cursed king, Kedrigern receives a battered, slightly magical carpet. The carpet is a flying one, but who hates flying and dreams only of lying on the floor in front of the fireplace. Kedrigern eventually transfers the flying magic into a chair.

Princess convinces Kedrigern to attend a convention of wizards. Alas, she is accidentally transformed back into a talking toad. Kedrigern decides that only Arlebar will know how to safely transform her back into a human. In the meanwhile, Kedrigern reluctantly accepts to visit King Panglunder, whose young fiancee Lalloree has been put under a spell by the King's jealous sorceress Memanesha. After some diplomatic discussion, Kedrigern accepts to take Lalloree back to her parents, who leave not far from Arlebar's. Kedrigern ignores where Arlebar exacly lives, but expects to get directions once they reach the Inn on the Outer Edge. From the Inn, they depart with a company of questing adventurers led by Conrad. They are attacked underway by a magic mist, leftover from ancient magical wars. Kedrigern and Princess are transported into our present by the wizard's emergency escape spell; Princess is abducted by crooked showbusinessmen. Kedrigern replenish his magic at a monastery who still cultivates simples, then saves Princess and both return to their time using the escape spell in reverse. Upon arrival, Princess is human again, with the addition of small but functional wings. Their travel companions are all transformed, Lalloree and Conrad are now talking toads. They leave to Arlebar's just before Death takes him, but he cannot change back the two toads. They then take the toads to Lalloree parents who are very understanding. Kedrigern and Princess then go back home.

Spirits from the Vasty Deep

Extra-terrestrials land near Kedrigern's house while he rests from a complex summoning spell. Convinced the E.T. are the spirits he's been trying to summon, he refuses to believe their story of planetary conquest. Kedrigern eventually just makes them and their space ship vanish.

Hey, Ho, the Wind and the Rain

Kedrigern is asked to help a king whose kingdom suffers from drought. Upon arrival, he understands that the king cares only for his gardens and fountains and not for the land, which suffers from the king hoarding all the water for his garden. He however demands that Kedrigern provides twice the standard amount of rain in order to fill his reservoir and cisterns. Kedrigern complies, but summons a heavy rain over the badly built reservoir and light rain over the fields; the dam is soon broken, and the land can be properly irrigated again. He then helps the crooked Chamberlain to escape in exchange for the money he had embezzled during the construction of the dam.

The Quality of Murphy

A king asks Conhoon to change his daughter back, who has been transformed into a giant rat by a djinnee. Conhoon asks a pooka named Murphy to find the djinnee; Murphy is eager since the local spirits don't like interference of foreign spirits in local affairs. The djinnee refuses to at first to cooperate since upon being freed from his bottle, his feet remained trapped in it. Conhoon and Murphy convince the king to re-open the bottle to let the feet out. In exchange the djinnee accepts to lift the curse and stores it in the bottle, that Conhoon takes with him for later use.

Kedrigern is a misanthropic wizard who specializes in counterspells. A widow troll mother gives him her newborn baby before dying near her husband, and Kedrigern trains him as a house servant. Some time later, on the way back from a house call, he meets a talking toad whom he transforms back into a beautiful young amnesic woman whom he names Princess. Alas, she cannot talk and croaks instead; this doesn't prevent them from getting married. Kedrigern tries multiple methods to give her back the ability to talk, with no success. One day he meets a minstrel who knows the spell to cure Princess. Princess starts studying magic, but also wants to have a social life. She convinces Kedrigern to visit the prince of Grodz who is asking for help because of a plage of magical rats. Although wary of the prince's reputation as a cruel man, they take the journey. Upon arrival Kedrigern is drugged and fed to the magic rats. The latter, human workers transformed by a sorcerer, however recognize him and spare him. Kedrigern returns them to their normal shape and runs to save Princess. She had however already succeeded in transforming the prince in a toad, freeing the country from the tyrant.

What if Aunt Petunia had married a scientist instead of Vernon Dursley?

Harry is an orphan raised by his aunt and her husband. He knows everything about the scientific method, and has read loads of fantasy and sci-fi, and for some reason he is also intellectually gifted. When the letter from Hogwarts arrives, Harry accepts the fact that magic exists, that he is a wizard, and that he will have the opportunity to study magic using the scientific method. In Hogwarts, he is sorted in Ravenclaw, and so is Hermione Granger. Upon meeting Draco Malfoy, he decides to introduce him to the methods of rationality, in order to make him change his mind regarding the need for Blood Purity, with proof that mixing with Muggles is not the reason why magic is becoming weaker (rather, powerful spells are not transmitted to the next generation). Harry also experiments on Magic with Hermione and discovers that contrary to what he is being taught, Transfiguration is possible on parts of objects, once the object is considered at the quantic level. Having a day cycle of 26 hours, Harry is secretely given a Time Turner and the Invisibility Cloak, which he immediately abuses to experiment on, and gets a reputation for having greater powers than Dumbledore. Professor Quirrel decides that teaching Defence against the Dark Arts requires more than the official curriculum, and organizes his students in three armies, with, for the first-years, Draco, Hermione and Harry as generals. The armies have regular battles, forcing the students to learn about tactics, strategy, cunning, courage… all things that Quirrel considers necessary for citizens to know, if they need to face again a Dark Lord like Voldermort. Harry and Quirrel start an apprentice-master relationship, Harry revealing that he has a secret inner dark side and a will to take over the world in a benevolent fashion, to repair injustice and prevent stupidity. During the lesson about defending oneself against Dementors, Harry is unable to cast a Patronus and psychologically wounded when his wand enters in contact with the Dementor. On a second attempt, Harry discovers that a happy thought is not enough for a Patronus, but rather reasons that the Dementors are holes in the fabric of reality leading to death; his hatred for death and his will to one day find a way to immortality allows him to produce a Patronus shaped as a Homo Sapiens and to destroy the Dementor by closing the hole (what was thought to be impossible). Quirrel then asks Harry to go to Azkaban and free Bellatrix Black, who has been imprisoned without trial and was not responsible for her actions, being under the Imperio curse. Wanting to repair the injustice, Harry agrees; Quirrel's plan gets wrong when Harry prevents him from killing a guard and his magic interferes with his teachers', rendering the latter unconscious. Harry manages to hide from the Dementors, to make a hole into the metallic wall of the cell (by partially transfiguring a large ring of metal into oil and just pushing the piece out) and escape with Quirrell and Black, using a rocket-boosted broom to escape the anti-broom charms on the prison. Harry wonders how Magical Britain can allow a place like Azkaban to exist and decides that once he becomes master of the world, he would destroy the prison. Later, a discussion with Dumbledore about heroes (and the fact that Harry, like Dumbledore in his youth, is destined to be a hero) triggers Hermione to want becoming a heroine; with a group of friends, they fight bullying in the corridors of Hogwarts. This causes a large group of bullies to trap the heroines, who are miraculously saved (by invisible Harry and Quirrel). Hermione is then depressed that she is not able to be heroine. In the final battle of the armies, Hermione wins against Harry and Draco; the latter is angry and provokes her into a (secret and forbidden) duel. The next morning, Draco in his hospital, and Hermione is accused of attempted murder, even if the only reasonnable explanation is that both her and Malfoy are the victims of a False Memory charm, probably caused by Voldemort. Hermione is tried in front of the Wizengamot, where Lucius Malfoy wants revenge. Harry, against Dumbledore's advice, uses a legal loophole and gets into debt with Malfoy to buy Hermione's freedom, preventing her from being sent to Azkaban. Soon after, Hermione is killed when a troll enters Hogwarts, and Harry becomes very gloomy; Hermione's body is also stolen; there is not doubt anymore that Voldemort has returned. Moreover, Quirrel is becoming more visibly sick and reveals that he won't last long. On the day of the Quidditch championship, Harry is baited into going back in time and caught by Voldermort. Together they go through the various traps protecting the Mirror where the Philosopher's Stone is hidden. Voldermort explains his motivation: the Voldermort character was at first a prank, a way for Tom Riddle, posing as David Monroe, to appear a hero after defeating a Dark Lord. He soon discovered that it was much more entertaining to be evil, and when he got bored, he decided to create an opponent worthy of himself by imprinting some of his thought patterns into baby Harry's mind. Voldermort had also created hundreds of horcruxes and lost them all over the world, one of them being even the golden plaque onboard the Pioneer 10 space probe, becoming impossible to kill. Voldemort also reveals that the Philosopher's Stone is a old magical device that makes Transfiguration permanent, stolen from Baba Yaga by Perenelle who then hid herself as Nicolas Flamel. Upon reaching the Mirror, Voldemort obtains the Philosopher's Stone and traps Dumbledore, who had just arrived, into the Mirror. Voldermort then takes Harry to a cemetary where, after recreating his own body, he revives Hermione, as promised to Harry (Harry had transfigured Hermione's body into a ring to keep it close) and even gives her the regeneration power of a troll and the goodness and purity of a unicorn. Harry is then surrounded by Death Eaters who just arrive, called by their master. Voldermort makes Harry take an Unbreakable vow never to destroy the World (which he suspects Harry would unwillingly do, according to some prophecies). After that, he tells Harry he will kill him. While psychologically torturing Harry to tell him things he the Dark Lord doesn't know (and that would kill him, according to another prophecy), Harry finds a way to escape by partially transfiguring the tip of his wand into a carbon nanotube wrapped around the Death Eaters and Voldermort's wrists. By tightening it, he kills the minions and renders Voldermort unconscious; he then Transfigures him into another ring, fakes the scene so as not to appear having been involved and leaves the place to tell McGonagall about the events. Harry then receives imporant responsibilities in Magical Britain by Dumbledore's will. He also puts into motion the creation of a hospital where people (magical folks and Muggles alike) can be made immortal, and the displacement of Azkaban's inmates to more human prisons. He also starts talking Hermione into destroying the Dementors, letting her become a heroine.

After graduating from the Imperial Academy, Miles is sent to a remote arctic training camp as the new weather officer. Refusing to obey an illegal order from the camp's commander, General Metzov, Miles is charged with mutiny and treason and, his behaviour having been considered the right one, spends some time in detention in the depths of ImpSec as his career in the Imperial Service is over. He's then transferred to ImpSec and sent by Illyan on a covert mission in the Hegen Hub as an arms dealer to investigate the military preparations in space stations, the Vervani (who have hired Randall's Rangers mercenaries) and Aslunder (protected by former Dendarii Mercenaries, now again under Oser's rule). He's then framed by his customer for murder, fails to flee, separated from his superior officer and made prisoner. In detention, he stumbles upon incognito Emperor Gregor, who, depressed, failed to commit suicide before fleeing from his diplomatic duty on Komarr. Disguised as a worker, Miles accompanies Gregor to Aslund station, where he makes contact with the Dendarii, asking their help for reaching the Barrayaran embassy on Aslund. Instead, they are delivered into the hands of Cavilo the femme fatale commander of Randall's Rangers, seconded by Metzov, now a mercenary. Cavilo keeps Gregor close to her, and sends Miles on a mission to retake command of the Dendarii as Admiral Naismith. Miles succeeds with the help of the his friends among the Dendarii, and guesses Cavilo's plan to marry Gregor and become Empress of Barrayar, abandoning her first plan to let the Cetagandans invade the Hub and loot the planets in the confusion. Luring Cavilo and Gregor to his ship as she is abandoning her mercenaries, Miles recovers his emperor and keeps the Cetagandan invasion at bay by letting Gregor diplomatically unify the forces of the Hub until they are reinforced by Barrayaran ships. In the end, Illyan agrees to make the Dendarii a tool of ImpSec.

Miles Vorkosigan fails his physical entry exam to the Imperial Military Academy. He then goes to Beta Colony to visit his grandmother, accompanied by sergeant Bothari and his daughter Elena. Soon after his arrival, he buys (giving a piece of worthless land on Barrayar as guarantee for later payment) an obsolete freighter to prevent his pilot, Arde Mayhew, from committing suicide and destroying part of the spaceport. Soon after, he meets a Barrayaran deserter, engineer Baz Jezek. Together, they accept a cargo of "agricultural material" to pay back for the freighter. The cargo is actually weapons for the Felicians, one side of a civil war on Tau Verde IV, and they are soon stopped by Oseran Mercenaries who control access to the planet for the Felicians adversairs, the Pelians. Miles and his party manage to take control of the mercenary ship, pretending to be part of the Dendarii Mercenaries. The prisoners are soon turned into the first actual Dendarii Mercenaries, and they deliver together the cargo. On the space station where they land, they are attacked by Pelians and Oser's troops, but manage to beat them and hire the whole of them as Dendarii mercenaries. They then break Oser's trust in their Pelian employer by hijacking the mercenaries' monthly pay, and finally the whole of Oser's troops become Dendarii. Miles is then joined by his cousin Ivan, who was under direct order to find him, but actually unknowingly escaped death by being late as usual. Back on Barrayar, Miles foils an attempt to break a rift between the Emperor and Vorkosigan House by being actually present instead of fomenting a revolution with the help of his private (and illegally owned) army, as the conspirators claim. Miles gives ownership of his mercenaries to the Emperor, who gives it to ImpSec. Having proven his value as a tactician and a commander, Miles is then allowed to join the Academy.

Khany entraîne Yoko dans un voyage vers Mars pour retrouver Tevy, une adolescente vinéenne qui était en hibernation dans une base sous terre mais qui a disparu. Elle porte dans son esprit un programme, conçu par Karpan, destiné à détruire toute vie bactérienne sur Terre pour permettre la colonisation par les vinéens. Sur Mars, Yoko et ses amis sont fait prisonniers par Karpan, qui force Tevy a piloter la fusée-bombe destinée à « purifier » la Terre. Yoko parvient à détruire les installations de Karpan et à sauver Tevy.

La mère de Soda rend une enveloppe à un inconnu dans le métro, qui lui dit de ne pas utiliser le métro dans la semaine à venir. Soda tente de retrouver l'homme, le soupçonnant d'être un terroriste. Aidé de Babs qui utilise le réseau de caméras de surveillance de la ville, il arrive dans une usine abandonnée où on tente de le tuer. Le tueur est son ancien capitaine, présumé mort dans l'attaque du 11 septembre 2001. Ce dernier lui révèle qu'on le fait chanter en menaçant sa fille, afin qu'il participe à un réseau de pseudo-terroristes, effectuant des attaques afin que les gouvernements prennent des lois plus autoritaires.

Amadeus est kidnappé et envoie un numéro à Léo par SMS. Il s'agit d'un numéro de conteneur, qu'il finit par retrouver sur le port, plein d'armes en plus des contrefaçons qu'attendait Amadeus. Ils sont attaqués par les kidnappeurs, mais parviennent à s'enfuire, plongeant la voiture de ces derniers dans le port. La voiture se révèle appartenir à un imam qui a réussi à maintenant la paix dans la cité de Plan Vallon. Le préfet est impatient d'y donner l'assaut mais Léo parvient à l'en empêcher, promettant d'arrêter les trafficants d'armes. Lors de l'échange entre les armes et Amadeus, la police intervient et arrête les criminels. dont le chef est le fils de l'imam.

Fernand poursuit son récit. Jim et Jenna avaient été préparés (de force pour Jim) par l'Invisible afin d'être capables de se transformer l'un en l'autre à l'aide d'un miroir. Lorsque le bureau royal a attaqué et détruit la cité aérienne de l'Invisible, Jim s'est enfuit en ayant perdu la mémoire. Dans le présent, les amis de Jim trouvent la piste de la nouvelle base de l'Invisible, sous-marine cette fois. Ils sont fait prisonniers et l'Invisible, après avoir révélé son plan d'enlèvement du roi par sa technique des miroirs, tente de préparer Marnie et Beltran. Ils sont sauvés in extremis par Jim et Jenna, qui peuvent maintenant exister séparément pendant un temps grâce aux améliorations apportées au système. Le bureau royal attaque la base sous-marine, mais manquent à nouveau d'arrêter l'Invisible. Jim et Jenna se retrouvent cepedant fusionnés en un seul corps, moitié Jim et moitié Jenna.

Moriarty est mort, Holmes prétend l'être. Blackstone vient d'être nommé à la Special Branch et compte utiliser son noveau pouvoir pour se débarasser de Holmes. Il essaye d'arrêter le trio de francs-tireurs de Holmes afin de forcer ce dernier à se montrer; prévenus à temps par Lestrade, ils se réfugient dans la Rookery de Dead End. Kilburn fait donner l'assaut, mais les 3 enfants parviennent à s'échapper. Avec Holmes, ils forcent Blackstone à révéler l'endroit où il a caché son dossier sur ses relations avec Moriarty et le lui prennent. Blackstone se suicide, mais le colonel Moran court toujours.

À la veille de l'exposition universelle de 1889, de la dynamite est volée à Paris. Un indice désigne les Fenians irlandais, et la Special Branch est appelée en renfort. Un fabricant de bombes meurt dans une explosion accidentelle, et les agents trouvent chez lui un photo aérienne qui les mêne chez un photographe récemment décédé dans un accident. Ce dernier conservait un dossier sur J.H. Cooper, contenant entre autres un photo de la guerre civile américaine. Les inspecteurs rencontrent ensuite le canadien Percy Tyrell qui les invite dans son bar américain au premier étage de la tour Eiffel où ils reconnaissent la photo, exposée sur le mur. Tyrell les fait prisonnier dans sa réserve, remplie de dymanite; ils parviennent à empêcher l'explosion, mais Cooper/Tyrell s'enfuit.

At the emperor's death, Aral Vorkosigan becomes Regent of prince Gregor. But many would like to take his place by force, or at least replace him with a more traditionalist head of state. Aral is attacked twice; the second time Cordelia is a victim as well and the antidote to the combat gas used in the attack affects he baby she is bearing. He is surgically removed and placed in a uterine replicator, and follows an experimental treatment to repair the damage made to his developing bones. Several weeks later, the head of imperial security arrives to Vorkosigan House with prince Gregor; the imperial residence has been attacked by Vordarrian's partisans, Gregor's mother Kareen has been taken hostage. Cordelia, Gregor and a few trusted men flee to the mountains to hide Gregor. Cordelia then joins her Aral in his headquarter. When she learns that the laboratory where her baby was treated was attacked and that the uterine replicator was taken hostage without anyone able to service it, she decides to lead, against Aral's will, a commando attack to the imperial residence, using Kareen's former bodyguards knowledge of secret escape routes. She manages to recover the uterne replicator, killing Vordarrian (and Kareen) in the process. This leads to the defeat of the rebellion. Some time later, Miles Vorkosigan is born, with extremely brittle bones.

Cordelia Naismith and her crew are exploring a new planet. They are attacked by Barrayaran forces and all survivors except her manage to escape. She is taken prisoner by Aral Vorkosigan, a Barrayaran captain, who is trying to determine which faction of his crew has attacked the explorers in an attempt to kill him and blame it on Cordelia's crew. With Cordelia's help, he manages to retake control of his men, and Cordelia is sent back home to Beta Colony. Some months later, she is on a secret mission to send weapons to Escobar, a planet under siege by Barrayaran cruisers. She is made prisoner and taken by admiral Vorrutyer who wants his batman to rape and torture her. Vorrutyer is killed by the batman, mentally unstable sergeant Bothari whom she had met among Vorkosigan's men earlier. She is then rescued hand hidden by Vorkosigan who is also aboard the cruiser. Crown Prince Serg then leads the assault on Escobar and is killed by the weapons delivered by Cordelia. He explains that the emperor wanted to get rid of his perverted son, and that the whole invasion was a plan to get Serg assassinated. Following the Barrayaran's retreat, Cordelia is then sent back to Beta Colony; there she is suspected to have been brainwashed by the Barrayarans, and she flees to Barrayar, where she finally accepts Vorkosigan's earlier marriage proposal. With him, she meets the dying emperor who convinces Aral to become Regent to Serg's son, four-year old Gregor.

Cohen the Barbarian and his Silver Horde are going to Dunmanifestin to “take the fire back to the gods”, as a vengeance for the latter letting the heroes getting old instead of getting killed heroically in battle. When they learn about that, the Patrician and the Wizards of Ankh-Morpork send a team to prevent this from happening, since the very powerful explosive the heroes are carrying would destroy the gods and thereby destroy all magic on the Disc, with catastrophical consequences. The team is composed of Carrot, Rincewind and Leonard of Quirm, who built the dragon-powered vehicle that is thrown off the edge of the Disc, travels below it between the Elephant's legs, and is supposed to circle back above the Disc and land on the top of Cori Celesti. Because of the unexpected presence aboard of the Librarian, they are forced to land on the Moon to refill their air tanks and find fuel for the dragons. They eventually arrive and manage to convince Cohen that if they destroy the gods, and therefore the Disc, nobody would remember the dead Heroes (which is what being a Hero is all about). The Horde leaves running with the soon-to-detonate explosive and die heroically. Or maybe actually not?

Rentrant chez elle, elle apprend que sa voisine a tué son ivrogne de mari avant de se suicider ; en voyant de vieilles lettres appartenant à la femme, elle découvre qu'il s'agissait de la mère de Fabrice.

Dans un futur indéterminé, Martial Canterel, Shylock Holmes et son domestique Grimod partent à la poursuite du voleur de l'Anankè, un diamant volé à une amie commune, Lady MacRae dont la fille Verity est dans le coma depuis dix ans. Étrangement, trois pieds chaussés de chaussures Anankè (une marque inexistante) ont été retrouvés sur une plage anglaise. Les empreintes superposées des trois chaussures produisent un message caché les guidant vers un magicien qui se produit à Londres. Ce dernier meurt sur scène (chaussé d'Anakè), mais ils trouvent un autre message secrèt indiquant que le diamant partira pour Pékin dans le Transsibérien. Ils attrapent le train de justesse, soupçonnent que le voleur est aussi un assassin notoire qui commet deux meutres dans le train. Le train est ensuite attaqué par des bandits révolutionnaires fanatiques religieux et leur groupe (augmenté du docteur Mardrus, rencontré en chemin, qui décide de s'occupé de Verity) se retrouve divisé. Grâce à l'armée de mercenaires qui vient à leur secours, ils rejoignent leurs amis à Pékin où ils trouvent la photographie d'une chanteuse unijambiste, leur indice suivant. Il s'agit en fait de la soeur jumelle de la chanteuse, prostituée en Australie. Ils s'y rendent en dirigeable (ils font naufrage en cours de route, mais regagnent l'Australie sans explication) où ils trouvent des coordonnées tatouées de manières anamorphiques autour de son anus. Ces coordonnées sont celle du point Némo, le point de l'océan Pacifique le plus éloigné de toute terre. Ils affrètent un navire qui les emmènent au point Némo, où une île faite de particules de plastique agglomérées apparaît brusquement. Abandonnés sur l'île par les marins du navire, ils finissent par découvrir un centre de recherche privé au centre de l'île où travaillent ceux qui veulent améliorer le sort de la planète. Lady MacRae fait partie de cette organisation, dont le chef, Martyrio, ancienne artiste de cirque, se présente comme la fille de Moriarty. Toute l'enquête n'est qu'une mise en scène destinée à les faire rejoindre lîle. Le docteur Mardrus se révèle être l'assassin du Transsibérien et tente de saboter le centre de recherche. Débarassés de lui mais l'île menaçant de couler, tous prennent place dans un nautile géant, le Nautilus, et s'enfoncent sous l'eau. On apprent alors que cette histoire a été inventée par Arnaud et racontée à Dulcie jour après jour (à la manière des lecteurs dans les manufactures de cigare des Caraïbes). Une fois l'histoire terminée, Arnaud met fin à ses jours et à ceux du Dulcie.

Dick Simnel invents the steam locomotive and manages to get into business with Harry King. The Patrician orders Moist von Lipwig to take a closer look at this phenomenon that gets all of Ankh-Morpork excited (even Drumknott). Meanwhile, extremist dwarfs are causing trouble in Uberwald, accusing King Rhys to stray from “true dwarfishness”. Moist helps King and Simenl building the first railroad to Sto Lat and to Quirm, allowing fresh goods to arrive still fresh to Ankh-Morpork. He discovers that goblins are very interested in the train (and even start building an underground railway near Quirm). While a conference between the kings of dwarfs and trolls takes place in Quirm, the Patrician orders Moist to build a railway to Bonk in Uberwald. The task is huge and the time is limited, but Moist eventually understands that with King Rhys away from Uberwald, the extremist dwarfs will try to take power. Rhys is then smuggled quietly out of Quirm and onto the train to Bonk. The journey is long and they are attacked several times by rebel dwarfs. When they finally arrive in Bonk, Rhys reasserts his right to the Scone of Stone and even announces that he is actually female.

Elle s'enfuit avec des diamants, et meurt dans l'explosion de la voiture de Karat ayant compris que Karat fait assasiner tous ses complices, Carmen a décidé de tuer préventivement Karat. Elle s'enfuit avec des diamants, et meurt dans l'explosion de la voiture de Karat.

Naïf, il se fait voler, puis devient l'ami d'un poète avant de rejoindre finalement les gardes du cardinal, où il se fait piéger puis chasser des Gardes. Frère jumeau du roi de la cour des miracles (sans le savoir), il arrête une embuscade lors d'un déplacement du Roi, destiné à salir l'honneur de comte de Limon, chef de la police, qui tente de devenir le remplaçant du Cardinal. Eusèbe est alors kidnappé et amené à son frères.

Atalante libère le géant, mais Hadès s'y oppose. Il accepte finalement de le libérer si Atalante résout le problème des morts-vivants qui apparaissent en Enfer que sur lesquels Hadès n'a aucun contrôle. Elle rencontre finalemet le dernier des Grands Anciens, présent sur Terre avant l'avènement des géants et des cyclopes, et dont les cauchemares prennent forment, donnant naissance aux morts-vivants. Atalante tue le Grand Ancien, faisant immédiatement disparaître les morts-vivants et guérissant Raxos. Entre temps, Hérakles libère le géant, qui aide Atalante et ses amis à réparer l'Argos. Les aventuriers arrivent alors là où la toison d'or est gardée. Le roi les invite à un banquet et leur présente sa fille Médée. Cette dernière séduit Jason et lui demande de l'emmener avec eux.

Le fils du père Grommël tombe amoureux de Waha. Il mentionne les cadeaux distribués aux enfants, et Gnondpom et Tyneth veulent les leurs. Tous les quatre partent alors au Pölnör. À leur arrivée, les deux enfants détruisent le palais du père en Grommël parce qu'on refuse de leur donner des cadeau. Les quatre voyageurs retournent alors en ville à la rencontre du père Grommël qui fait sa tournée, mais ils découvrent qu'ils ne peuvent avoir de cadeau que s'ils écrivent d'abord une lettre, qu'ils font écrire par un écrivain public ; ce dernier indique cependant que les enfants ont été très méchants et ne méritent pas de cadeau. Ils mettent la lettre à la boite puis grâce au traineau magique, retournent au village troll la veille. La mère fouettarde apparaît alors au lieu du père Grommël, mais elle se fait dévorer.

Vers la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, Blake est transféré de l'armée de l'air vers les services secrets pour piloter un futur prototype. Il apprend que l'empereur Basam-Damdu s'arme en secret dans l'Himalaya et attend que les deux camps s'épuisent pour envahir le monde. À la base secrète de Scaw-Fell, il rencontre Mortimer, qui lui présente les plans du futur Espadon. Ils se rendent ensuite à Bletchley Park, où ils rencontrent Olrik, spécialiste des langues slaves. Ils sont espionnés et des plans sont volés. Blake et Mortimer se rendent ensuite à Gibraltar pour mettre en place des leurres contre les U-Boots conçus par Mortimer. Ils découvrent un espion qui communique avec Olrik via son frère jumeau au QG de Londres. Olrik s'enfuit à Lhassa tandis que le gouvernement britannique refuse d'intervenir au Tibet.

On a parallel-universe Earth named Arbre, thinkers are named avouts and live in concents, closed, monastery-like communities with a strict discipline, that open to the outside world only once every year, decade, century or millenium, depending on the group they belong to. The narrator, Erasmas, lives in such a community. When his mentor Orolo is thrown out of the concent with no explanation, he starts to investigate with the help of a few friends and eventually finds out that Orolo had discovered that a spacehip is orbiting around Arbre. Soon after, he, his friends and several other are told to leave the concent and go across the world to another concent. With the help of family and friends from the outside world, Erasmas decides to take a detour to try and find where Orolo has gone. After a long trip across the North pole (the shortest route) he finally finds Orolo on a tropical island, at a place that works like a concent without being one, where the people had been excavating for hundreds of years a burried temple. Soon after, a space capsule lands on the site, containing the corpse of a woman who obviously comes from the spaceship, and is identified from her body's chemistry that she doesn't belong to this universe. The digging site is soon after destroyed from orbit by the spaceship and, Orolo being dead, Erasmas decides to continue his journey to the concent where he was supposed to go. There avouts and ordinary people are brainstorming about the spaceship and what do to about it. Erasmas discovers that an alien from the spaceship is already among them, pretending to be an avout from a little-known concent. He explains that the spaceship has crossed parallel universes already four times and is inhabited by people from four parallel planets, one of them being Earth, divided into two opposed factions, one of which plans to raid Arbre for the resources necessary to reparing their spaceship, while the other is open to negociations. Erasmas, his friends and a small group of avouts specialized in martial arts are sent to be quickly trained as astronauts and soon after launched into space with a mission to disable the bomb that threatens Arbre. After entering the spaceship, Erasmas experiences multiple parallel possible outcomes of his story. In the last one, he wakes up in a hospital, then takes part in negociations between Arbre and the people of the spaceship. In the epilogue, avouts are not anymore restricted to live in concents, starting a new era in the history of Arbre.

In a not-too-distant future, the USA have become a patchwork of privately-owned districts and highways where the law doesn't exist anymore and the Mafia is just another business organization (focusing on home-delivered pizzas that are always on time; if not, the Don himself apologizes in person). In the Metaverse, a world-wide virtual reality system, Hiro, a hacker, investigates a computer virus that affects also the human brain of hackers. Thanks to information gathered by the associate of his former girlfriend, Hiro learns that the virus reprograms the hackers' brains, returning it to the state it was in Sumerian times, when there was a unique language and most people were nothing more than robots executing programs useful to the society, controlled by the local priest. The myth of the Tower of Babel would then come from the event were such a priest, Enki, programmed people to speak different languages, making them immune to the programming. In the meanwhile Y.T., a young kourier on skateboard, friend of Hiro's, is helping the Mafia to get their hands on a sample of the virus (that also has a biological form), distributed as a drug by a cult. Y.T. is then abducted by the cult and taken to the Raft, a large bunch of ships attached together around the aircraft-carrier Enterprise, bought by the telecommunication mogul Rife. The latter is the one who dug out clay tablets containing the virus and made a computerized equivalent that can be absorbed by hackers through sight. Most of the people infected by the virus are on the Raft, soon to be debarked in California to take over North America. Hiro manages to come abord the Raft and fails to save Y.T., but manages to get the Babel tablet (that Rife owned too) and deprogram everybody that was infected. Y.T., in Rife's helicopter flies to Los Angeles, where they are ambushed by the Mafia. Y.T. is the only one that manages to escape the fight. Meanwhile in the Metaverse, Hiro manages to prevent a massive outbreak of the Virus disguised as a light-and-sound show.

En 1892, Buffalo Bill présente son Wild West Show à Londres. Un ancien officier américain est assassiné et tous les indices pointent vers un des Sioux du spectacle, dont la famille avait été massacrée par les troupes de l'officier ; ces indices sont cependant trop grossiers pour être crédibles. L'indien lui-même est laissé pour mort dans l'East-End et recueilli par une triade chinoise. Ces derniers mettent la main sur des gangsters anglais et l'indien reconnait deux d'entre-eux. Il fait parvenir un message à Buffalo Bill qui aide les agents de la Special Branch dans leur enquête. L'assassin, chef de gang anglais, est arrêté et avoue avoir été engagé par le beau-frère de la victime qui voulait prendre le contrôle de la fortune de ce derner.

Quatrième et dernier tome des Gardiens de Ji par Pierre Grimbert. Les héritiers arrivent dans une reproduction de Dara quelque part dans les montagnes, où ils retrouvent Nol l'Étrange et certains des enfants de Dara, réincarnés en humains. Damián comprend que le Jal a été crée par accident par les Éthèques qui expérimentaient avec une magie de plus en plus puissante. Ils sont attaqués la nuit par les démons réincarnés en monstres, et grâce à Nol, mortellement blessé, ils passent la porte et le retrouve dans le Lus'An. Faits prisonniers par les Zües, ils s'allient avec elles pour repousser une attaque des mercenaires de Saat ; ce dernier est parvenu à sortir de Karu au moment de sa disparition et veut maintenant conquérir le monde. Sa présence est la raison pour laquelle la disparition du Jal est imparfaite. Les héritiers partent alors avec les Zües à l'attaque de son repaire. Grâce à Lorilis qui a compris dans une vision comment leurs parents ont disparu (en créant un nouveau Jal grâce à la magie), ils emportent Saat avec eux dans le nouveau Jal où ils retrouvent leurs parents et Souanne, réincarnation de l'esprit d'Eurydice, libère enfin l'âme de Saat. Au moment de quitter ce nouveau Jal par la dernière Porte, Najel renonce à tuer Guéderic, incarnation de Sombre, refusant d'accomplir la prophétie d'Usul, un dieu qui n'existe plus. Finalement les héritiers, jeunes et vieux, se retrouvent sur l'île de Ji, à attendre que passe un navire.

Peu après les événements décrits dans L'alchimiste des ombres, les Lames tentent de remonter la piste du dragon qui a attaqué la prison du Chatelet et tué l'Alchimiste (ainsi qu'un membre des Lames). Ils retrouvent l'Italienne, qui sert d'intermédiaire entre un envoyé du Pape et un prisonnier, agent de la Griffe Noire, mais ils sont attaqués et le prisonnier est tué. L'Italienne révèle qu'elle aussi (en plus du capitaine des Lames) travaille pour les Gardiens, un groupe de dragons qui cherchent à empêcher une guerre entre humains et dragons. Les Lames ont cette fois-ci affaire à une loge rebelle de La Griffe Noire qui se fait appeler les Arcanes, dont le dirigeant veut provoquer la guerre et asservir les humains. Pour ce faire il prend le contrôle d'un dragon Archaïque et le fait voler sur Paris dans le but d'y provoquer un gigantesque incendie et le chaos. Un ordre religieux, les Chatelaines, utilisent leurs connaissances de la magie draconique pour repousser l'attaque, mais c'est seulement grâce à une Lame, la seule femme du groupe qui a été une novice de l'ordre, avait renoncé à prononce ses voeux et qui prend maintenant le voile, que le dragon est battu. On apprend que la reine avait été contaminée par l'essence des dragons étant enfant, et que ce sont les Chatelaines qui ont fait leur possible pour l'empêcher d'avoir un enfant.

Un mois après les événement décrits dans Les lames du cardinal, les agents de Richelieu ont pour mission d'approcher l'Italienne, une espionne qui affirme avoir des informations sur un complot contre le trône de France impliquant l'alchimiste des ombres, un dragon qui cherche à destabiliser le royaume. L'Italienne veut échanger ces informations contre un pardon et l'immunité, chose que le roi ne peut lui accorder sans provoquer de scandale. Elle finit tout de même par lacher une information qui permet aux Lames d'identifier parmi les membres de la conjuration la reine et la duchesse de Chevreuse, toutes deux opposées au roi. Ce derner a pour projet secret de faire arrêter la reine, la duchesse et le garde des Sceaux (amant de la duchesse) à la fin d'une fête donnée au chateau de Dampierre. Les Lames découvrent que la Griffe Noire est impliquée dans la conspiration, et que sous couvert de pratiquer un rituel de magie draconique sur la reine afin d'augmenter sa fertilité (cette dernière n'ayant toujours pas donné d'héritier au trône), l'alchimiste des ombres, se faisant passer pour un maître de magie bénéfique, tente d'enlever la reine. Les Lames réussisent à empêcher l'enlèvement et à capturer l'alchimiste ; peu après, Paris est attaqué par un immense dragon noir.

Pröfy a enfin construit une maison qui ne s'effondre pas, mais elle est détruite par les autres trolls lors de la fête de la pendaison de la crèmière. Pröfy devient alors catatonique et les trolls partent à la recherche d'un médecin humain pour soigner son coté humain qui est malade. Ils rencontrent un psychanaliste qui déclare que Pröfy a un problème avec son père. Ils partent donc à sa recherche, et après l'avoir retrouvé, partent en croisade contre Tonsantöh qui brûle toute la forêt pour y faire pousser du maïs et du blé sur brûlis grâce à son pouvoir; ils finissent par se débarasser du bonhomme.

Jim et Jenna disparaissent de leur nouveau magasin. Leurs amis enquêtent et Fernand, ayant lu un document laissé par Jim et à lire en cas de dispartion, leur apprend qu'au début de sa carrière au bureau royal, Jim travaillait sous couverture pour un traficant de drogue. Ce dernier l'ayant percé à jour, il livre Jim à son fournisseur, “l'Invisible”, un homme vivant dans une ville flottant dans les nuages et capable d'échanger son corps avec celui d'une femme au moyen d'un miroir. À la fin de l'épisode, une groupe de femmes arrive, et parmi elles se trouve Jenna.

Ils finissent par découvrir que le spectre a trouvé pour compagne une fantôme hantant un manoir, et a pour cette raison quitté son frère. Pendant ce temps, Dupin enquête sur une série de meutres qui ont eu lieu dans toute la france au cours des années passées.

Richelieu reforme un groupe de soldats/espions d'élite surnommé les Lames du Cardinal, avec pour mission, dans le cadre de délicates négociations diplomatiques avec l'Espagne, de retrouver un chevalier espagnol réfugié en France avec un compagnon. Les Lames retrouvent puis perdent la trace du compagnon et empêchent l'enlèvement de la maîtresse de celui-ci. En parallèle, la Griffe Noire, une société secrète espagnole composée de decendants à forme humaine de dragons et de leurs fidèles, tente d'ouvrir une loge en France, ce que Richelieu cherche à empêcher. Ils finissent par découvrir le lieu de la cérémonie d'ouverture de la loge, où les âmes des fidèles sont liées à l'esprit d'un dragon ancestral et empêchent la cérémonie de s'accomplir. Ils découvrent aussi que la maîtresse du compagnon est en fait la fille de l'ambassadeur (déguisée en chevalier pour voyager plus discrètement), enfuie avec son amant, et que l'ambassadeur cherche à retrouver, utilisant les négociations pour forcer Richelieu à s'en occuper. On apprend enfin que la jeune femme est en fait la fille naturelle du capitaine des Lames, et que le mari de la mère, actuel ambassadeur d'Espagne, est une ancienne Lame qui avait trahi ses compagnons lors du siège de la Rochellem provoquant la dissolution du groupe.

Janua Vera: Leodegar, Roi-Dieu de Leomance a des cauchemars où il entends des coups frappés. Pour se changer les idées, il part à l'assaut d'une forteresse, est blessé mortellement, et meurt en frappant le portail dudit chateau. Il reconnait alors les coups de ses cauchemars.

Mauvaise donne: Benvenuto Gesufal échoue à assassiner sa cible puis découvre que son patron est assassiné. Il découvre que sa cible était le Podestat de la ville de Ciudalia, et qu'il était lui-même le commenditaire de l'assassinat, dont le but était de discréditer un opposant politique. Benvenuto affronte le Podestat, et le convainc de le prendre à son service.

Le service des dames: Pour payer le droit de passer une rivière, le chevalier Ædan doit rapporter la tête du baron voisin, Hywel, qui a tué le mari de la baronne locale. Ædan s'exécute, mais se rend compte qu'il a été manipulé, le mari de la baronne avait agressé Hywel.

Une offrande très précieuse: Cecht le barbare est bléssé lors d'une bataille et, perdu, tente avec Dugham, un compagnon mortellement blessé, de rejoindre son pays. Perdu dans la forêt, il rencontre la Vieille Déesse qui le convainc d'accepter la mort de son fils adoptif pour prix de la guérison de Dugham. Cecht se réveille alors sur le champ de bataille plusieurs jours plus tôt et un Dugham en bonne santé le guide vers leur pays.

Le conte de Suzelle: Toute jeune, Suzelle rencontre un elfe et en tombe amoureux. Toute sa vie durant elle espère le revoir. Son fils meurt à a guerre, son mari meur aussi, et chassée de chez elle par sa bru, part vivre dans une cabane dans la forêt. À la fin de sa vie, cherchant du bois par un hiver terrible, elle revoit l'elfe, qui se souvient d'elle, mais qui croit qu'il ne s'est écoulé qu'un an ou deux.

Jour de guigne: Maître Calame, scribe, souffre du Syndrôme du Palimpseste après avoir écrit sur un parchemin de sorcellerie mal gratté: il a une malchance pas possible et devrait statistiquemen se faire encore assassiner. Le bailli décide de le contraindre à servir d'appât pour capturer un meurtrier ; Calame se retrouve finalement face à ce dernier, un Changeur de Forme qui prend son apparence, attrape sa malchance et meurt bêtement.

Un amour dévorant: Deux fantômes hantent le bois depuis deux siècles à la recherche d'Éthaine, une jeune fille. Un prêtre du Désséché enquête dans le but d'appaiser ces âmes perdues, découvre l'identité des fantômes (un baron et son écuyer) mais échoue à retrouver le fantôme de la fille. Le pêcheur local, que le prêtre a oublié d'interroger, sait que le fantôme de la fille enceinte, hante l'étang où elle s'est suicidée pour échapper aux deux hommes.
