In parallel Earth where peoples souls live outside of their body as daemons, Lyra, the legend has it that a mystical “dust” that would allow to travel between universes. In Oxford, Lors Asriel is leaving North in search for this dust. His niece Lyra is sad to see him go, and she quickly accepts Mrs. Coulter's offer to take her North with her as her assistant. But Lyra quickly discovers that Mrs. Coulter is the head of an organization that abducts children for unknown purposes. She escapes and joins a group of Gyptians, whose childre have disappeared. On the Gyptian's ship, travelling North, Lyra meets a witch who tells her that the children are in a place named Bolvangar. At a Norwegian port, she meets an aeronaut who advise her to hire an armoured (polar) bear. There happens to be one in town, Iorek, and Lyran convinces him to join her quest. One night, Lyra find the son of one of the Gyptians who has escaped from Bolvangar; his daemon has gone. Iorek happens to the lawful prince of the amored bears of Svalbard, and Lyra tricks the usurper king into fighting Iorek. Iorek wins the battle and their army joins Lyra. Iorek then takes her to Bolvangar, where she secretely enters the facility. She discovers that Mrs. Coulter's organization, under the supervision of the Magisterium, are conducting experiments for separating a person from his daemon. Lyra destroys the machine and lets the children out, while the armored bears arrive to fight the Tartar mercenaries defending the facility. After winning the battle, Lyra and her friends continue their travel to find Lord Asriel's laboratory.
