Werel is a planet with an orbital period of sixty Earth years. Rolery is a young native woman of the Tevaran tribe who meets Jakob, a human descendent from the small group of explorers who were marooned on the planet several Earth centuries ago. As winter is coming, the Tevarans are preparing for fifteen years without food by building a fortified and partially underground city with food reserves that should also protect them from pillage by the nomadic tribes of Gaals migrating south for the cold season. This year however, human scouts warn them that the Gaals seem to have united and will be strong enough to invade the Tevaran's city. Despite Jakob's marriage with Rolery being seen as unacceptable by the Tevarans, the humans help them evacuate their city when it is attacked by the Gaals and give them shelter in their own fortified city. The Gaals then attack the human city and cause many deaths, but eventually give up due to the terrible weather and the need to move south in search for food.
