Near Havana, an old fisherman has gone eighty-four days without catching a big fish. The next day he leaves as usual and after a few hours catches the largest tuna ever. The tuna pulls him far from the shore. The whole day, the old man holds firm on his line, and during the night too. The next day, the fish finally starts getting tired, and the old man kills it. He then attaches it alongside his skiff and sails back home. He has to endure attacks of sharks who eat his tuna bit by bit. When he finally reaches his harbour, there is nothing left from the fish but the head and the bones.
