Masklin (along with Angalo and Gurder) are searching for Grandson Richard, as the Thing has told him that it could call their spaceship if it could get aboard the communications satellite Richard is going to launch. The nomes first go to the airport where they quietly board Concorde and fly to Florida. After causing some trouble on the plane, they hide in Richard's luggage and end up in his hotel room. They however have to flee and end up outside where they meet a tribe of Nomes who speak a language close to ancient Nomish. They manage to communicate thanks to the Thing and the local Nomes fly them to the space shuttle's launch site on geese (thanks to which they migrate yearly between Alaska and Florida). Near the shuttle, the Thing uploads itself into the satellite and exhausts in doing so all the power it had stored. After the takeoff, Masklin decides to take it to a human building to let it recharge itself near electrical wires. He is caught (on purpose) by humans but manages to escape with the recharged Thing as the Nomes' spaceship arrives and Angalo and Gurder board it. Masklin then by chance meets Richard, with whom he discusses briefly as the Nome's spaceship, piloted by Angalo, lands again and let him board. They then fly away back to Britain after making a detour through South America where they pick up a Bromeliad flower that Masklin gives to Grimma before taking the Nomes. Gurder decides to stay on Earth to search for other Nome tribes, tell them of their origins and give them the possibility to migrate to a Nome planet the next time the spaceship would visit Earth.

The nomes have resettled in a closed quarry. When they discover that the quarry will soon reopen, they wonder what to do, and consider moving to a barn on the other side of the field. Reading a newspaper article about Arnold Bros' grandson who who is traveling to Florida on business about a communication satellite, Masklin decides to leave with a few nomes and find more about the grandson. In the meanwhile winter comes and covers the ground with snow, making it impossible for the younger and elder nomes to travel to the barn. As humans come to reopen the quarry, Grimma has to oppose a rising religious nome who promises that faith in Arnold Bros will solve all their problems; that nome is accidentally killed by humans. The nomes sabotage a truck in an attempt to prevent the humans to enter the quarry, lead by Dorcas who make them steal the battery and diesel fuel, but the truck accidentally rolls onto the railways tracks and causes an accident. More humans come to the quarry, put poisoned bait to eliminate what they believe to be rats. Dorcas and his nomes, who had been lost outside after the accident, is finally found and presents his plan: he has found and repaired a JCB digger in shed, and proposes to use it to take all the nomes to the barn. The drive out among amazed humans, but are chased by the police. The eventually get stuck on the top of a hill, when a spaceship appears above them.

Roger hires Eddie to check if his wife indeed cheats on him with Clark Gable, as the tabloids claim. Soon after, Eddie is also hired by Selznick who want him to find a small metal box that had disappeared after a triple interview with Roger, Baby Herman and Enigman for his next film, Gone with the Wind. Eddie first suspects Enigman, but the latter gets killed with Eddie's gun as the detective is interviewing him at his home. Suspected by the police, Eddie's investigation leads him to a shady rum dealer who is later murdered. Eddie is also hired by Clarke who suspects his girlfriend Carol Lombard to cheat on him. Roger is also suspected of murder, but it's his cousin Dodger who is also after the box that framed him, only to be murdered soon after. With Roger and Clark as sidekicks, Eddie discover that the box contains the formula for the Toon Tonic that can transform a toon into a human and vice versa, and Selznick's right hand, Pepper Potts, is the toon behind the murders. Eddie recovers the box from Roger's coverall pocket (where Baby had put it to reduce the competition for Selznick's film). Roger makes some of the Toon Tonic and becomes another human in the crowd. Eddied eventually agrees with Potts to exchange the box against Jessica and her twin sister Joellyn (who is only 6 inches tall) whom Potts had abducted. During the encounter, Eddie gets wounded, Potts gets killed, but the two women are found and saved by the police. Roger decides to become a toon again and gives Eddie the leftover tonic for safekeeping, after having burnt the formula. Selznick then explains Eddie he knows nothing of Potts' dealings and that he had bought the formula from the rum dealer in the hope of making enough money from it that he would be able to produce his film; Eddie suggests he makes the film with human actors and with a serious tone instead. Jessica then explains Roger that she leaked the rumors of her infidelity to the press to make Carol jealous and open to Clark's marriage proposal; the plot succeeds. Jessica and Roger also get triplet children. There is also a side story with Eddie's lost brother Freddy who had disappeared but is actually happily living his life as a toon and Eddie's sister Heddy whom he suspects of being a toon pretending to be a human married to a toon cop.

En 1961, Spirou et Fantasio se rendent à New York pour interviewer Castro lors d'un discours à l'ONU. Ils y retrouvent Longplaying à qui ils donnent un GAG amélioré, sans savoir qu'il travaille pour la CIA. Deux agents utilisent Spirou, le prenant pour un groom, pour un attentat contre Castro, et les hommes de ce dernier kidnappent Spirou et l'emmènent à Cuba. Les agents y envoient alors Fantasio, armé du GAG, reprendre contact avec la rébellion pro-USA. À Cuba, Seccotine est en reportage et rencontre Guevara. Lors d'une réception où elle est invitée par ce dernier, elle rencontre Fantasio déguisé en clown. Suite à une altercation causée par le Marsupilami, les deux journalistes s'enfuient et se réfugient dans la forêt, où ils sont faits prisonniers par les rebelles. Après avoir réussi à s'expliquer, Seccotine part de son coté pour tenter de libérer Spirou en prévenant la police que les américains préparent une attaque, mais finit par être mise par Guevara en prison, dans la même cellule que Spirou. De son coté, Fantasio et les rebelles préparent une attaque contre la prison et parviennent à libérer les deux prisonniers. Ils apprennent de Guevara que Castro, qui s'est emparé du GAG, va participer à la défense contre les américains et se cachent dans son avion, faisant échouer son plan et détruisant le GAG.

A handful of nomes live in a burrow at a rest area along the motorway. Life being very hard, they decide to hop on a lorry and leave, in the hope for a better life. The lorry stops in the garage of the Arnold Bros department store where they meet a community of two thousand nomes who has been living there for generations and mostly refuses to believe there exists an Outside. The newcomers have a black box, transmitted from generation to generation, that starts to speak to them as it comes near electrical wiring; it explains that the nomes have crashed on Earth in a spaceship fifteen thousand years ago and that it is a flight recorder. The nomes had attempted to teach technology to the humans in order to get them to build a space shuttle that could fly them to their mothership, but it failed. When the nomes discover that the store is about to be closed, they plan to escape by stealing a lorry. As the closure happens faster than expected, they have to steal a lorry (thankfully loaded with plenty of useful items) in a hurry and learn to drive (with the help of numerous levers and pulleys) as they escape. They eventually find shelter in a quarry near the airport and contemplate stealing an airplane.

En Écosse, Bonnie et Émilia obeservent des moines dans un monastère en ruines, mais ces derniers disparaissent. Le lendemain, un moine explique à Yoko que'ils cherchent les traces historique d'un animal satanique qui a habité les lieux au moyen-âge. Cecilia montre alors à Yoko une patte d'aigle en or, trouvée une siècle plus tôt. Plus tard, le moine révèle à Yoko les deux versions de l'histoire de l'aigle, soit tué par les moines, soit enlevé par des démons dans une machine entourée d'une spirale de lumière. Yoko contacte alors Zarkâ qui explique que l'aigle, synthétique, avait été mis en place par les Vinéens pour surveiller les moines 800 ans plus tôt. Zhyttâ vient alors chercher Yoko à la demande de la déesse Brigit. Mais Monya arrive alors avec le translateur temporel, et Yoko décide de plutôt l'accompagner à l'époque de l'aigle 800 ans plus tôt. Elles arrivent juste après l'incendie du monastère et rencontrent Sébastien, un jeune moine qui les explique que les moines sont surveillés par d'autres moines-alchimistes qui fréquentent Lucifer, apparemment un extraterrestre. Les moines confient à Yoko l'aigle qu'ils gardent prisonnier, et elles repartent vers le présent avec l'aigle et Sébastien. À leur retour, elles voient que Khâny est arrivée et repartent avec elle au temple des immortelles pour faire réparer l'aigle par Zhyttâ, qui est partie en avance. Au temple. Yoko présente Sébastien à Brigit, puis rejoint Zarkâ auprès du sarcophage où survit une créature que Zarkâ décrit comme avoir été imposé pour gérer la Terre, et qui a crée Zarkâ. De peur d'être détruite par Yoko, la créature, qui ressemble au Lucifer des moines du passé, les force à fuir.

Suite à un accident, Rabah est devenu un légume. Carlo a fait construire un nouveau Stromboli, mais a besoin d'argent pour le payer. Nao et lui sont enlevés par Ragnar le pirate qui a besoin d'un courrier pour échanger de l'or contre des otages. Ragnar travaille avec un scientifique peu scrupuleux qui affirme pouvoir guérir Rabah. Nao accepte, en échange de laisser Ragnar établir une base sur Aquablue. Carlo et Nao récupèrent les otages et parviennent à garder l'or, grâce à une dissension entre deux factions des kidnappeurs, une espèce insectoïde. Rabah est soigné par le scientifique pendant que l'autre faction d'insectoïdes attaquent la base de Ragnar pour reprendre l'or. Une fois les attaqunts repoussés, Rabah se réveille et prend possession de son nouveau Stromboli.

Patch, le roi des brigands fait enlever Puck par Scabs afin de contraindre Tom à voler, dans le musée privé de Scotland Yard, une lettre écrite par Jack l'éventreur. Lorsqu'il lui livre la lettre, Patch dit à Tom de se débrouiller avec Scabs libérer Puck. Tom s'enfuit grâce à l'aide de son ami le vieux Bailey. Billy et Charlie trouvent la cachette où Scabs a enfermé Puck et le libèrent. Holmes est cependant mécontent que Tom lui ait caché son problème et soit allé voler la lettre. Quand Tom découvre que Patch a fait tuer Bailey, il retourne chez Patch pour se venger. Ce dernier lui propose de tue Scabs, mais Tom refuse. Patch, qui vient de faire enlever Charlie, exige que Tom revienne dans sa bande de voleurs. Tom accepte pour sauver son amie. Charlier demande alors de l'aide à Watson, qui va exiger la libération de Tom. Bones, le tueur dont Patch use pour contrôler les autre brigands par la peur se fait tuer et ces derniers se débarrassent de leur roi. Holmes récupère la lettre chez un ancien policier du Yard qui revend ds relique criminelles à des collectionneurs sans scrupule, mais bannit Tom des Irréguliers pour avoir mis en péril sa réputation professionnelle.

Sur fond de campagne présidentielle, Belton enquête sur la source d'une drogue frelatée qui tue nombre de ses utilisateurs. Une femme masquée appelée Foudre cherche elle aussi le fournisseur, qui est un criminel masqué appelé Crâne. Josh s'infiltre dans l'organisation de Kenler, un baron de la droguer connu (aussi candidat à l'élection), tandis que Jenna devient danseuse dans le cabaret de Melvik, connu pour diffuser la drogue. Josh est fait prisonnier par Crâne au cours d'une opération de Kenler pour se débarrasser de son rival, et est libéré par Foudre. Cette dernière est capable d'utiliser les miroirs pour se déplacer. Jenna se fait inviter à dîner chez Melvik où elle est attaquée par Crâne et sauvée par Foudre. Plus tard, lorsque Marnie surveille l'appartement de Melvik, elle le voit s'échanger avec Crâne grâce à un miroir et se battre contre Foudre. Crâne est démasqué et arrêté, mais Foudre s'échappe.

Morn has been rescued by Nick's pirate. The ship's computer expert is killed by Nick for having attempted to rape her just after having boasted that he planted a virus in the ship's computer. Morn, needing to be useful to the ship to avoid being killed, claims she can flush the virus. To bear being raped by Nick, she accidentally sets her zone implant so that she takes pleasure in it, slowly making Nick fall in love with her. Thanks to the device, she also works continuously for days and successfully gets rid of the virus. She also discovers being pregnant (from Angus) but leads Nick to believe he is the father. As a spaceship is no place to rise a child, Nick decides to go to the Amnion outpost and trade some of his blood for getting the baby extracted and artificially grown close to adulthood. As the Amnions cannot create a new mind, the boy, Davies, receives Morn's memories. The Amnions are specialists in genetics and want to mutate humans to turn them into Amnions; until now the process is imperfect and most humans are frightened of them, but as Nick seems to be an agent of UMCP (the mining corporation's all-powerful police) he has access to an anti-mutagenic drug that UMCP has kept a secret. The Amnions notice that Nick has cheated when donating his blood and demand Davies in reparation. As Nick seems willing to agree to that deal, Morn rigs a self-destruct of the ship and threatens to blow up the Amnion's outpost if they don't leave with Davies. The pirate ship manages to leave to a human outpost but an Amnion cruiser blocks their way. Nick has locked Morn in her cabin and has humiliated her as a revenge for manipulating him in multiple ways. He agrees to transfer Davies to the Amnion ship in an escape pod, but Morn manages to escape and change the pod's programming and send it to the human outpost. Nick also sends a secret message to UMCP, who then sends Angus Thermopyle, turned into a cyborg against his will, to capture her.

Angus Thermopyle is an evil an unsuccessful space pirate. When he enters a bar on a mining space station accompanied with a beautiful young woman, Morn Hyland, the patrons wonder how that happened. Another, better looking pirate, Nick Succorso, confronts Angus and somehow rescues Morn. It sounds like a classical drama of captor, victim and rescuer. The real story however is that Angus was chased by a United Mining Company Police vessel aboard which Morn was serving. Suffering from undiagnosed gap-sickness, she lost control and provoked the vessel to self-destruct. Angus rescued her, installed a zone implant in her brain (for which he could be executed if caught) to control her actions and prevent her from destroy his beloved ship, and used the implant to torture Morn into submission to him. He however unexpectedly grew emotionally attached to her. When Nick leaves suddenly the station to raid a ship in distress just before it is locked down, Angus, who has been monitoring his communications, follows him. Th ship however does not exist, it is all a trap set by Nick with the complicity of someone in station security. Nick cripples Angus' ship, and flies slowly back to the station. There Nick makes secretely contact with Morn who helps him frame Angus for stealing stations supplies. She negotiates the zone implant's remote control from Angus in exchange for her silence about the illegal installation of the device. Morn leaves in Nick's ship and Angus is arrested but his life is spared, making Morn his rescuer.

Des pièces d'or anciennes entrent en contrebande aux États-Unis et financent l'organisation de Mr. Big. Ce dernier, à la tête d'un réseau criminel, est un agent de l'URSS, originaire de Haïti et possède une grande influence sur la communauté noire américaine qui le considère comme le Baron Samedi du Vaudou. Le yacht de Big va régulièrement de la Floride à la Jamaïque pour y chercher des poissons exotiques et des coquillages, vendus par un grossiste local. Comme l'or semble provenir de la Jamaïque, Bond est envoyé à New York pour enquêter avec Felix Leiter, agent de la CIA. Dans une boite de nuit de Harlem, Bond est enlevé et interrogé par Big qui fait appel à une jeune femme, Solitaire, capable de détecter le mensonge. Bond s'échappe et part ensuite en train en compagnie de Solitaire qui veut échapper à Big. Ils échappent de peu à un attentat et arrivent en Floride mais sont rapidement repérés par un agent de Big. Solitaire est enlevée par Big, tandis que Leiter, allé enquêter seul chez le grossiste, finit à l'hôpital, mutilé. Bond y enquête à son tour, découvre que l'or est caché dans le sable au fond des aquariums de poissons venimeux. Il est attaqué par le propriétaire du magasin qui finit à travers une trappe dans le bassin à requins dont Leiter a été victime. Bond part alors pour la Jamaïque et se prépare pour une expédition sur l'île, privée, où mouille le yacht de Big. Il parvient à l'île en scaphandre autonome et place une mine sur la coque du navire, mais est ensuite repéré et arrêté, tenant compagnie à Solitaire. Les hommes de Big sont en train de vider la caverne contenant le trésor du pirate Henry Morgan. Leur départ est prévu le lendemain matin, juste au moment où la mine doit exploser et Big prévoit de tuer Bond et Solitaire en les trainant derrière le yacht à travers le récif de corail pour attirer les requins et barracudas qui les achèveront. La mine explose heureusement juste à temps et Bond et Solitaire sont sauvés par Quarrel.

Le Chiffre est un agent de SMERSH en France. Il a perdu de l'argent de ses commanditaires dans de mauvais investissements et tente de gagner de l'argent en jouant au casino de Royal-les-Eaux. James Bond, sous la couverture d'un riche fils de planteur de la Jamaïque, est chargé de lui faire perdre son argent au Baccara afin de le discréditer auprès de ses supérieurs. L'opération est un succès, mais sa collègue Vesper Lynd avec qui il dinait est enlevé par Le Chiffre. Bond les poursuit en voiture mais est enlevé à son tour quand sa voiture est forcée à sorti de la route. Le Chiffre torture Bond pour lui faire révéler l'endroit où il a caché le chèque que lui a remis le casino. Il doit son salut à un assassin de SMERSH qui exécute Le Chiffre mais qui n'a pas d'instructions à son sujet. Bond se réveille à l'hôpital quelques jours plus tard et songe sérieusement à changer de carrière. Il passe sa convalescence avec Vesper, mais leur relation se détériore au bout de quelque jours, cette dernière devenant mélancolique et distante; elle est effrayée et voit des ennemis partout. Bond décide de la demande en mariage, mais il la retrouve morte le lendemain. Dans un lettre expliquant son suicide, elle révèle être une agente double. En colère de s'être fait manipuler, Bond décide de poursuivre sa carrière d'agent secret.

The civilization of Canopus colonizes the planet Shikasta and expects to keep it under its positive influence, but a cosmic event reduces that influence to almost nothing. Johor, emissary of Shikasta reports that the Giants, installed there to guide the evolution of the Natives disappear slowly under the ambiguous influence of agents of Sirius and under the negative influence of the emissaries of Shammat, the moral opposite of Canopus. The Natives themselves are less and less benevolents towards each other. Johor reports the typically miserable lives of a few individuals between World Wars 1 and 2, and History books cite the diary of a young woman telling the story of her brother George in the time leading to World War 3. Very charismatic, George organizes Youth groups that turn into Youth Armies in various parts of the world, who take care of providing refuge to children orphaned by the various conflicts that erupt everywhere. Reports by Chinese agrens indicate that at some point George is chosen to represent non-white people in a mock trial of the white people regrding the colonization of Africa and the Americas. This event seems to mark the beginning of the third World War.

Roger Rabbit, a toon, hires private investigator Eddie Valiant to get him out of his contract with the DeGreasy brothers, where he plays second role to Baby Herman in a comic strip shot by photographer Carol Masters. Rocco DeGreasy is soon after found shot dead at his desk and Roger is found shot dead at his home, with evidence pointing at his estranged wife Jessica. Eddie is then hired by Roger's doppelganger (which toons can create at will for a limited time) created just before his death to solve the mystery of his death. The police quickly concludes that Rocco has been killed by Roger and that the latter by Jessica. But as the investigation progresses, DeGreasy's brother Dominick, Jessica and Roger mention a teakettle that all three claim belongs to them. Eddie discovers a parallel plot where Rocco's son has had perfect duplicates of Carol's strips' negatives made, to sell multiple “originals” to various collectors. Carol has witnessed part of Roger's murder, seen the kettle fly out of the rabbit's home and taken it. Tracing the origin of the kettle, through a prop master who bought it for cheap for a set where Roger was acting to Roger stealing it as a souvenir, Eddie discovers that the kettle is in reality a magic lantern containing a genie that grants wishes only to toons. The kettle had first been used by the DeGreasys, originally toons, to turn them human and give them a comic strip syndicate. Eddie leaves Dominick alone with the lantern as the remaining brother needs his third wish to remain a human, but he gets shot by the genie who, embittered by thousand of years of imprisonment has decided to kill the toons that call him. Eddie then talks to the genie who explains that Roger accidentally activated the lantern when wishing that he could marry Jessica, as the required words are part of a song that he sings often. Getting a contract with Rocco was his second wish, twisted by the genie so that he would only ever be a second role and would not be able to get out of the contract. Roger's marriage was also made to last only for a year, explaining why the marriage ended as inexplicably as it had started. Salt water being the genie's weakness, Eddie coerces him to grant him a wish of finding a suicide note from Dominick confessing to both Rocco's and Roger's murders. The detective then drops the lantern in the salt water fish tank. Eddie however concludes that the original Roger has killed Rocco, whom the rabbit believed had stolen Jessica from him, using his doppelganger as an alibi and planning to plant the murder weapon at Valiant's office to make him the fall guy but was shot by the genie after accidentally summoning it. Roger's doppelganger finally disintegrate.

Sixteen-year-old Hazel is resurrected by a mage. First held by the Inquisition she is released thanks to the influence of the king and invited to join Alistair the vampire, Lara the werewolf and Lyvaelan the dark elf warlock and become the new special members of the Evenfall Vigil, dedicated to protect the kingdom from nocturnal supernatural threats. They first investigate the disappearance of bluecap workers, extremely fast moving, small fae creatures participating to the construction of the city walls. They soon have a first encounter with aufhockers, creatures made of shadows that seem to swallow the bluecaps without killing them. Hazel, despite being the target of the cult of Semeleme the goddess of death, is not a conventional undead as she has premonitory dreams and, thanks to the guidance of Lyvaelan she develops psychic abilities and the capacity to communicate with plants and make them grow. Mortally wounded during the encounter with the aufhockers she manages to heal herself in a few minutes, and when burned alive by the cult of Semeleme she heals in a few days. Hazel also announces a prophecy about a lich of half a day that deeply troubles her colleagues. While investigating, they discover that the aufhockers work for the Alchemist, a person rich enough to have handsomely paid a dozen men to attack them with the help of a blue potion that makes one of them very fast. Pursuing that line of investigation they talk with the head of the university of magic who introduces them to a professor of alchemy. The latter makes a list of alchemists who could be the Alchemist. The professor also advise them to visit Paxton Averly, a very nice alchemist who helps then narrow down the list of suspects. The eventually find a pair of suspects, but it is an obvious setup. Hazel is then set up to notice dead bluecaps in Averly's laboratory, giving him the excuse to attack the team with the support of his aufhockers. Averly's bluecap potion makes him almost invincible, and they manage to vanquish him only because Lyvaelan's warlock side concentrates so much magic that he is close to killing himself while destroying the whole city (a risk of which he is well aware and causes most people to fear warlocks).

Après le couronnement de Luke, Merlin apprend le décès de Swayvill, roi du Chaos. Il ne reste plus que deux prétendants au trône du Chaos avant Merlin, qui risquent eux aussi de se faire assassiner sous peu, probablement par une machination de Dara et Mandor qui veulent faire couronner Merlin afin d'en faire leur marionnette. Lors d'une visite dans la demeure où il a passé son enfance, Merlin découvre une chapelle secrète dédiée à son père, Corwin. Ces chapelles sont apparues après la défaite du Chaos par Ambre, et fait penser à Merlin que son père pourrait être encore vivant, retenu prisonnier par la personne qui a construit la chapelle (en l'occurrence, Dara). Plus tard, pendant les funérailles de Swayvill, Merlin et Jurt (avec qui il s'est réconcilié) s'éclipsent et profitent du décalage temporel pour aller sauver Corail, reine de Kashfa, qui a été enlevée par des agents du Chaos afin de s'emparer du joyau du Destin que le Logrus et la Marelle tentent de s'approprier. À leur retour peu avant la fin de la cérémonie, les deux autres prétendants au trône se font assassiner. Des envoyés de la Marelle tentent ensuite d'enlever Corail, mais Merlin dissuade cette dernière en menaçant de la détruire en y versant de son sang. Merlin compte protéger Corail à la fois du Logrus qui veut sa revanche sur la Marelle et de la Marelle qui veut maintenir sa supériorité actuelle. Merlin parvient ensuite à découvrir où son père est gardé prisonnier et à le libérer. Merlin affronte ensuite le Logrus et Mandor et gagne grâce à l'aide de sa roue spectrale. Mandor abandonne alors l'idée d'en faire sa marionnette politique, ce qui incite Merlin à accepter de monter sur le trône.

Merlin, Jasra et Mandor dinent dans le donjon des Quatre-Mondes et Jasra raconte comment elle a participé à la formation de Julia à la sorcellerie. Plus tard, Merlin se retrouve transporté dans un univers en noir et blanc et en négatif où il est abordé par divers personnages, dont Dworkin, Obéron… Il se rend rapidement compte que ce sont des constructions fabriquées par la Marelle et par le Logrus, deux puissances fondamentales qui s'affrontent et cherchent à le manipuler dans cet univers situé entre les ombres. Il y rencontre un double de Jurt qui lui propose de bonne foi son aide en échange d'une chance de rejoindre le monde réel avec Merlin. Après avoir volé le joyau du jugement au palais d'Ambre à travers un portail apparu pour l'occasion, Merlin finit par parcourir une ombre de la Marelle, abimée, qu'il répare à l'aide du joyau, comme l'avait fait autrefois Obéron avec celle d'Ambre. Il retrouve Corail au centre de la Marelle, puis cette dernière les transporte au palais d'Ambre. Merlin cherche alors une manière de retourner le joyau à sa place sans avoir à s'explique avec Random, mais il est interrompu par une apparition de la Licorne et du Serpent, symboles d'Ambre et du Chaos, qui s'affrontent pour la possession du joyau dans le palais, le détruisant en partie. Corail est blessée à l'½il et Dworkin la soigne, remplaçant l'½il par le joyau. Merlin apprend ensuite que Luke avait arrangé son combat avec Dalt afin que ce dernier l'emmène dans le royaume de Kashfa d'où lui et Jasra sont originaires et où il devient roi au cours d'un coup d'état. Le roi et la reine l'envoient ensuite à Kashfa représenter officieusement Ambre au couronnement de Luke.

Merlin se rend compte que la présence de personnages d'Alice au pays des merveilles sont des hallucinations de Luke, qui a été drogué. Après avoir échappé à un Jabberwocky et à un ange igné, Il lui donne de quoi se soigner puis contacte son demi-frère du chaos, Mandor qui lui apprend que son père est mourant et que leur frère Jurt est jaloux du fait que Merlin est avant lui dans la succession au trône du chaos. Plus tard en Ambre, Merlin est chargé de faire visiter la ville à Corail, l'une des deux filles d'un ambassadeur en visite. Durant leur promenade, ils croisent le chemin de Jurt et les blessures de ce dernier font comprendre à Merlin qu'il est le sorcier transformé en loup monstrueux qui l'avait attaqué plus tôt, en association avec le sorcier au masque bleu, surnommé Masque. Corail avoue être une fille illégitime d'Obéron, et convainc donc Merlin de la laisser traverser la Marelle avant de disparaitre avec la promesse de le contacter bientôt. Luke, guéri, vient voir Merlin et lui explique que Masque compte probablement utiliser la Fontaine de Puissance du donjon des Quatre-Mondes pour transformer Jurt en «  atout vivant  » comme l'avait fait Brand autrefois. Durant le dîner en compagnie de l'ambassadeur et de sa suite, la seconde fille de ce dernier, Nayda, tente de séduire Merlin. Merlin et Luke sont ensuite envoyés par la reine, Vialle, à la frontière où se tiennent les troupes de Dalt. Ce dernier accepte de ne pas attaque à condition de pouvoir se battre en duel contre Luke. Dalt gagne et emmène Luke avec lui en repartant. De retour en Ambre, Merlin va voir Nayda et se rend compte qu'elle est habitée par l'entité qui avait précédemment possédé Vinta. Avec l'aide de Mandor qu'il a appelé à l'aide, il apprend qu'il s'agit d'un démon qui cherche effectivement à protéger Merlin, mais qu'il lui est impossible de lui expliquer pourquoi. Après de longues délibérations, Luke réveille Jasra et la convainc de les accompagner, Mandor et lui, au donjon afin d'empêcher Masque de rendre Jurt tout-puissant. Ils arrivent cependant trop tard et perdent le combat. Jurt et Masque s'enfuient, mais Merlin reconnait derrière le masque Julia, son ex-petite amie qui s'était initiée à la sorcellerie et qu'il avait trouvé morte chez elle.

Merlin parvient à s'échapper de la caverne où Luke l'avait enfermé et, après un passage par l'appartement de son ex-petite amie à San Francisco où il trouve une porte magique, il se retrouve dans une Ombre où il assiste de loin au siège du Donjon des Quatre-Mondes. Le donjon appartient à un sorcier qui tient en otage Jasra, une reine et sorcière et mère de Luke, qui a déjà attaqué Merlin à deux reprises. Les assiégeants sont dirigés par Dalt, un homme qui a déjà attaqué Ambre par le passé. Merlin retourne ensuite en Ambre où, au cours d'une sortie, il est attaqué par plusieurs hommes. Vinta Bayle, ex-maîtresse de Caine lui vient en aide, lui explique qu'il est marqué magiquement par des pierres bleues qu'il a croisées plusieurs fois par le passé, que cette marque permet à ses adversaires de le retrouver, et que seul le passage par la Marelle d'Ambre effacerait cette marque. Elle lui propose alors de se réfugier dans sa propriété, ce que Merlin accepte. Vinta tente de lui soutirer des informations et Merlin tente de même, sans rien apprendre d'utile. Merlin reçoit ensuite par Atout un appel à l'aide de Luke, blessé, qu'il fait venir à lui. Ce dernier lui apprend que seules les premières tentatives d'assassinat des 30 avril sont de son fait et que les suivants ont été perpétrés par Jasra. Luke lui promet aussi une information capitale pour la sécurité d'Ambre si Merlin fait évader sa mère du donjon des Quatre-Mondes. Merlin finit aussi par comprendre que Vinta est possédée par une entité qui l'a déjà aidé par le passé de nombreuses fois à travers des personnes diverses. Quelques jours plus tard, suite à une attaque nocturne sur les chiens de gardes de la propriété, Luke demande à Merlin de l'emmener vers une Ombre où le temps passe plus vite afin d'accélérer sa guérison. Merlin l'emmène alors dans la caverne où il avait été gardé prisonnier. Il repart ensuite pour Ambre. En chemin il est attaqué par un loup monstrueux, en réalité en sorcier transformé, qui, sur le point de perdre le combat, s'échappe par une porte magique. Merlin arrive finalement en Ambre et traverse la Marelle, ce qui lui permet d'aller dans le donjon des Quatre-Mondes. Il y trouve le corps paralysé de Jasra, combat le sorcier au masque bleu qui est l'actuel occupant du donjon, et repart avec Jasra en Ambre à l'aide d'un Atout. Il est plus tard contacté par Luke à l'aide d'une magie inconnue. Ce dernier lui révèle que Dalt est en possession de fusils fonctionnels en Ambre, puis Merlin est soudainement attiré vers Luke et il se retrouve alors dans le monde d'Alice au pays des merveilles.

Merlin, le fils de Corwin vit sur l'Ombre Terre et vient juste de quitter son travail dans une entreprise d'informatique. Chaque 30 avril depuis des années, quelqu'un tente de l'assassiner par des méthodes exotique, et ce jour là ne fait pas exception : il manque de se faire dévorer par une créature qui vient de tuer son ex-petite amie. En enquêtant sur sa mort, il découvre qu'elle possédait un jeu d'Atouts représentant des lieux inconnus et fréquentait un peintre pratiquant la sorcellerie et qui semble connaitre Ambre. Le sorcier provoque Merlin en duel, et ce dernier le tue avant de s'échapper par un de ces Atouts. De retour sur Terre, il trouve, dans les décombres de l'incendie de l'atelier du peintre, des munitions chargées d'une poudre rouge qui ne brûle pas. Un peu plus tard, son ami depuis l'université, Luke, donne rendez-vous à Merlin au bar d'un hôtel. En l'attendant, Merlin est abordé par un homme, Martinez, qui le questionne à propos de Luke et lui demande s'il connait Ambre, avant de s'en aller. Plus tard, en promenade avec Luke, ce dernier questionne Merlin sur son projet de Roue Spectrale. Ils sont ensuite attaqués par Martinez. Luke blesse ce dernier, dit à Merlin de fuir, puis les deux hommes disparaissent. Merlin rend alors visite à Bill Roth, ami de son père, pour lui demander conseil. Pendant son séjour il est contacté par une connaissance de Corwin qui lui donne rendez-vous dans un bar. Merlin est alors soudainement contacté via son Atout par Random, roi d'Ambre, qui le fait venir au château. Merlin lui parle des munitions, qui se révèlent fonctionnelles en Ambre. Merlin retourne sur Terre pour son rendez-vous, et il fait la connaissance d'une femme qui avait elle aussi un mystérieux rendez-vous et qui le met et garde contre Luke. Merlin retourne alors en Ambre pour l'enterrement de Caine, récemment assassiné. La cérémonie est interrompue par une attaque, suite à quoi Random interroge Merlin sur sa Roue Spectrale. Il s'agit d'une sorte d'ordinateur capable de manipuler les Ombres et, au vu des dangers que l'appareil représente, Random ordonne à Merlin de l'arrêter. A contrec½ur, Merlin se rend dans l'Ombre où se trouve la machine ; cette dernière est cependant devenue consciente, ne veut pas être arrêtée et menace Merlin, qui ne doit la vie sauve qu'à l'intervention inopinée de Luke. Ce dernier emprisonne alors Merlin dans une caverne et lui révèle être en fait son cousin Rinaldo, le fils de Brand, qui cherche à venger son père.

Obéron annonce à Corwin qu'il va tenter de réparer la Marelle originale, mais qu'il en mourra certainement. Quelle que soit l'issue, il fera parvenir le joyau du jugement à son fils. Obéron envoie alors ce dernier aux Cours du Chaos sans autre explication. La route, qui doit traverser toutes les Ombres, est longue et semée d'embuches, notamment par Brand qui tente de le convaincre de changer de camp. Corwin reçoit effectivement le joyau et, se croyant perdu dans le chaos décide finalement de tracer sa propre Marelle. Il voit ensuite les armées du Chaos progresser puis arriver au contact des forces d'Ambre qui l'ont rejoint. Brand réapparait et parvient à voler le joyau à Corwin. Pendant que ce dernier et ses frères et s½urs tentent de reprendre le bijou, le visage d'Obéron apparait dans le ciel et, dans un message envoyé avant sa tentative, annonce que la licorne désignera le futur roi. Brand et Deirdre, que le premier tenait en otage, tombent finalement dans un précipice avec le joyau grâce à l'apparition inattendue de Caine, que tous croyaient mort mais qui avait mené en secret sa propre enquête de son coté. Dara apparait alors et présent à Corwin son fils adulte, Merlin, qu'elle a élevé dans les Cours. Tous assistent ensuite de loin au cortège funèbre d'Obéron, qui met fin au combat entre Ambre et le Chaos. La licorne apparait alors avec le joyau et le donne à Random, et tous retournent en Ambre (qui a finalement survécu). Corwin décide alors d'aller visiter les Cours du Chaos avec son fils.

Corwin, Random et Ganelon sont arrivés dans la véritable Ambre dont leur Ambre n'est déjà qu'une ombre. Ils découvrent que la Marelle a été endommagée par le sang de Martin, fils de Random. Corwin se rend alors dans le cachot où Dworkin lui avait rendu visite pendant son incarcération et il utilise le dessin de ce dernier pour aller le voir. Ce dernier, le prennant pour Obéron, lui révèle qu'il serait très risqué de réparer la Marelle originale et plus simple de la détruire et de recréer l'univers, et aussi que la Marelle et sa partie endommagée sont liées à l'esprit blessé de Dworkin. Pour réparer la Marelle, Corwin a besoin du joyau du jugement qu'il avait pris sur le corps d'Éric et caché quand il était retourné inopinément sur Terre, blessé. Dworkin se transformant en monstre lui ordonne de fuir, ce que Corwin fait en prenant une image au hasard, qui le conduit à la Cour du Chaos. Il manque de se faire tuer et en revient en utilisant l'Atout de Gérard. Corwin parle alors à Brand et comprend que ce dernier cherche aussi le joyau pour détruire et recréer Ambre. Corwin va alors sur Terre pour récupérer le joyau, mais il est devancé par Brand. Il apprend incidemment que Bleys et Fiona s'étaient en réalité opposés à Brand, toujours allié aux forces du Chaos, et que cette dernière a tenté de le tuer pour l'empêcher de détruire Ambre. De retour en Ambre, Corwin poursuit Brand sur la Marelle afin de l'empêcher d'atteindre le centre, ce qui lui permettrait de s'accorder avec le joyau pour utiliser ses pouvours. Empêché par Corwin de progresser, Brand parvient à se transporter ailleurs, usant de pouvoirs acquis après des années d'études avec Dworkin. Les frères et s½urs de Corwin montent alors la garde auprès de toutes les Marelles et, après avoir fait la connaissance de Martin, Corwit et Bendict se rendent à Tir-Na Nog'th, la seule Marelle que Brand peut espérer utiliser. Il y affronte Benedict qui parvient à lui prendre le joyau du jugement avant que la cité ne s'évapore. Brand disparait à nouvea. Ganelon arrive alors et révèle être Obéron, qui avait disparu depuis des siècles.

De retour en Ambre, Corwin a trouvé le corps de Caine et tente de trouver le responsable de sa mort. Il interroge longuement Random sur ce qui l'a conduit à répondre à un appel à l'aide de Brand puis chez Flora sur Terre quand Corwin s'y trouvait après sa fuite de l'hôpital. Tous ses frère et s½urs ont leur propres but secrets, pour certains il s'agit de monter sur le trône. Corwin parvient finalement à tous les rassembler au même endroit et à discuter entre autres de la disparition de Brand. En utilisant tous ensemble leurs Atouts représentant leur frère manquant, ils parviennent à le contacter dans une geôle inconnue et à l'en faire sortir grâce au pouvoir des cartes. Brand est cependant blessé d'un coup de poignard alors qu'il vient d'arriver en Ambre et Gérard décide de monter la garde auprès du blessé. Quand Corwin retourne dans ses appartements il est attaqué et se réveille sur Terre, blessé. Il parvient par chance à rencontrer un ami qui l'emmène à l'hôpital et qui lui révèle certains détails des évènements qui l'avaient conduit à perdre la mémoire, notamment l'implication de Brand. Corwin contacte Random qui le fait revenir en Ambre par son Atout. Lors d'une discussion privée avec Brand, Corwin apprend que c'est leur s½ur Fiona qui l'a poignardé. Elle, Brand et Bleys étaient associés pour s'opposer à Caine et Julian qui soutenaient Éric comme prétendant au trône, malgré l'opposition voilée de leur père, qui soupçonnait Éric de fratricide, avant sa disparition. Et contrairement à ce qu'il croyait, c'est Bleys et non pas Éric qui est responsable de l'accident qui a conduit Corwin à perdre la mémoire ; c'est Brand qui, voulant se distancier de ses deux comparses qui ont cherché à former une armée de créatures d'Ombres, l'a fait interner pour le protéger. Corwin se rend ensuite à Tir-na Nog'th, reflet d'Ambre dans le ciel la nuit, pour réfléchir à ses problèmes. Il y voit Dara, assise sur le trône d'Ambre, qui lui dit descendre de Benedict et d'un Demoiselle d'Enfer. Au levé du jour, avec Ganelon et Random ils tentent de repartir vers Ambre. Ils voient une licorne, symbole d'Ambre, et la suivent, mais sont mystérieusement déplacés, comme à travers Ombre mais tout en restant proche d'une Ambre, alternative, où le château a disparu.

Après avoir fui Ambre, Corwin trouver refuge en Lorraine où il retrouve Ganelon, qu'il a connu longtemps auparavant. La région est troublée par un cercle noir qui s'étend dans la campagne et d'où sortent des créatures monstrueuses. Corwin comprend que le cercle noir est causé par la malédiction qu'il a prononcée après le couronnement d'Éric ; avec Ganelon ils montent une petite armée de créatures venant d'une autre Ombre et réussissent à refermer le cercle. Ganelon et Corwin partent ensuite vers une ombre d'Avalon (la vraie Avalon ayant disparu il y a longtemps) où ils rencontrent Benedict et son arrière-petite-fille Dara. Corwin voit aussi l'½uvre de sa malédiction sous la forme d'une route noire qui semble traverser les ombres. Les explosifs ne fonctionnent pas en Ambre, mais Corwin sait qu'une poudre à polir rouge utilisée par les joaillers d'Avalon peut exploser. Il va donc sur une ombre inhabitée de la Terre chercher des diamants en Afrique du Sud pour acheter suffisamment de rouge à polir en Avalon, puis des armes à feu sur Terre. Avec une petite armée de créatures d'Ombre qui le considèrent comme un dieu, il retourne en Ambre. Là il se rend compte que les habitants sont attaqués par des créatures venant de la route noire, et il vient à leur aide. Éric est tué dans la bataille, et Corwin devient le nouveau roi. Il découvre aussi que Dara l'a suivi jusqu'à Ambre et que Benedict n'a pas de descendants. Corwin ne parvient pas à empêcher Dara d'entrer dans la Marelle et de disparaitre en prophétisant la future destruction d'Ambre.

Le narrateur se réveille, amnésique, dans un hôpital. En menaçant le directeur, il apprend que son nom est Corwin et que sa s½ur qui paye pour son internement forcé. Se rendant chez elle, Flora, il prétend avoir tous ses souvenirs et en apprend davantage sur lui : il a perdu la mémoire suite à un accident orchestré par son frère Eric qui a peur de lui. Leur frère Random se présente à la porte et après avoir repoussé l'attaque de créatures non-humaines, les deux hommes partent pour Ambre, dont ils sont originaires. Corwin apprend qu'Ambre est le seul monde réel et que tous les autres, dont la Terre, n'en sont que des ombres. Durant un trajet psychédélique d'ombre en ombre, Corwin apprend qu'il a de nombreux frères et s½urs, tous représentés dans les cartes d'un jeu magique, et qu'Eric prétend au trône depuis la disparition de leur père, Obéron. Arrivés en Ambre, après avoir dû repousser une attaque de Julian, allié d'Eric, ils délivrent Deirdre rencontrée par hasard. Cette dernière leur propose d'aller à Rebma, reflet d'Ambre sous la mer, traverser la Marelle qui devrait redonner tous ses souvenirs à Corwin. Corwin utilise alors la Marelle de Rebma pour se déplacer à la Marelle d'Ambre et espionner Eric. Blessé lors d'un duel, il s'échappe en rejoignant Bleys à travers sa carte. Avec les frères qui lui sont fidèles, Corwin assemble dans les ombres une armée et une flotte pour conquérir Ambre. Après une longue guerre, il parvient presque à son but, mais il est fait prisonnier et forcé de couronner Eric (non sans s'être d'abord couronné lui-même). Eric lui fait crever les yeux et jeter dans une oubliette. En tant que prince d'Ambre, il a certains pouvoirs, et après plus de trois ans, ses yeux repoussent. Un jour, il reçoit dans sa cellule la visite de Dworkin, l'auteur des cartes, qu'on dit devenu fou et qu'on croit disparu. Il demande à ce dernier de dessiner sur le mur de sa cellule un phare situé à quelque distance d'Ambre, ce qui lui permet de quitter sa cellule en passant par le tableau. Corwin reprend des forces pendant quelques mois en compagnie du gardien du phare, avant de partir à la voile.

Ymir est un planète gelée où les premiers colons ont été assujettis par la compagnie après que son sous-sol se soit révélée riche en zinc. Lorsque les mineurs creusent trop profonds, ils rencontrent parfois des grendel, créatures mi-organiques, mi-machines datant de l'époque des Architectes, les anciens habitants de la galaxie. Yorick est né sur Ymir tout comme son frère cadet Thello et ont grandi dans l'Entaille, une cité souterraine. Yorick est parti travailler pour la compagnie et a massacré 78 mineurs, une action calculée comme optimale par l'algorithme afin de soumettre la population mais qui lui vaut d'être haï par la population. Voyageant en stase de planète en planète pour tuer les grendels qui menacent les mineurs, Yorick revient, contre son gré sur Ymir. Il tente, sans succès, de retrouver Thello ; ce dernier lui ayant tiré dessus le jour de son départ d'Ymir, Yorick porte maintenant une prothèse de mâchoire. Lors d'une descente dans la mine où le grendel a tué des mineurs, Yorick suspecte que ce son frère est lié à l'attaque de la créature. Il y redescend avec des soldats et il y rencontre effectivement son frère qui le fait prisonnier et le force à l'accompagner à la surface. Pendant que des mineurs détournent l'attention en organisent une révolte dans l'Entaille, Thello et ses compagnons se dirigent l'ansible, moyen de transport inter-planétaire instantané, auquel le lien de Yorick avec la compagnie permettra aux rebelles d'accéder. L'expédition échoue, Thello et ses compagnons sont arrêtés et Yorick délivré. Mais ce dernier a été en contact, forcé, avec le grendel qui lui a fait comprendre que son souvenir de Thello lui détruisant la mâchoire est faux, que son frère n'est pas responsable de sa mutilation mais qu'elle est le résultat d'une tentative de suicide lorsqu'il s'est rendu compte que ce dernier le savait responsable de la mort de 78 mineurs. Le lendemain, Yorick réussit à convaincre quelques personnes de l'accompagner délivrer Thello et les autres. Thello n'est malheureusement pas avec les autres prisonniers mais a été emmenée par Gausta, la cheffe de Yorick, chez elle pour être interrogé. Le groupe part dans le blizzard vers la résidence de Gausta mais sont séparés en chemin. Yorick arrive le premier, est fait prisonnier et assiste à la séance de torture de son frère. Ils sont heureusement délivrés et accompagnent le grendel vers l'ansible, ce dernier ayant expliqué qu'il de l'espèce des Architectes et est resté sur Ymir quand les autres on effectué leur ascension ; l'ansible lui permet de les rejoindre.

Ingrey is sent from Easthome, capital city of the Weald, to investigate the death of Boleso, one of the two sons of the dying Hallow King. He quickly comes to believe Ijada's version, the woman who killed him in self defence: Boleso was attempting to use her as a human sacrifice that would allow him to acquire the soul of a leopard, an almost forgotten practice from the Old Weald from before the country was conquered by the Darthacans four centuries earlier that allowed to make shamans. Ijada is the unintended recipient of the animal's soul; Ingrey also has the soul of a wolf that had been forced on him by his father as a boy and, because he was not prepared, drove him mad for several years. On the way escorting Boleso's body and Ijada back to Easthome, Ingrey loses control of his wolf several time. Thanks to the unexpected arrival during a stop of Hallana, a sorceress and friend of Ijada, Ingrey understands that someone had cursed him so as to force him to murder Ijada. Ingrey and Ijada also fall in love during the journey. Later in Easthome, Ingrey has a mystic experience during Boleso's funeral, where he meets the Son; the god asks him to clean Boleso of all the animal souls he has accumulated so that he can receive the man's soul. Ingrey is then invited by his cousin Wencel who tells him that he is the real Hallow King, as he hosts the accumulated souls of all the descendants of the Hallow King who was killed with his army four centuries ago in Bloodfield, a patch of cursed forest that now belongs to Ijada. Those souls actually control Wencel's body and the cousin Ingrey knew as a child does not really exist anymore. The old king's curse was such that the souls of the dead soldiers are prisoner of Bloodfield. Moreover, Ingrey is next of kin to Wencel and will inherit and be taken over by the accumulated souls of the kings if he survives his cousin. As they attend the death of the Hallow King, Wencel captures the kingship of the Weald and becomes truly the new Hallow King, unbeknownst to all but Ingrey. Using shamanic powers, Wencel forces his wife Fara and Ingrey to accompany him on a journey to Bloodfield. Ingrey confronts Wencel whose body dies, making Ingrey responsible for letting the dead souls of four thousand soldiers rejoin their gods. Thankfully, Ijada, Hallana and a few friends arrive just in time to play the roles of conduits to the gods while Ingrey cleanses the souls of the soldiers from their animal souls. Ingrey also marries Ijada on the spot after the Old Weald fashion. Ingrey then somehow relinquishes his role of Hallow King and lets the son of the previous king take over. He also marries Ijada in a more usual ceremony.

The Gingerbreadman, a vicious killer, has escaped from the psychiatric hospital, but for political reasons the Nursery Crime Division is not allowed to investigate; Jack Spratt is even suspended. Spratt is then privately asked to investigate the disappearance of Goldilocks, a journalist who was investigating mysterious explosions (three past and one present) that seem to be related to the growing of record-size cucumbers by retired pysicists. After finding a house in the forest with three bears, Spratt discovers Goldilock's remains at SommeWorld, a theme park about the Battle of the Somme, financed by the Qangle Wangle, that features simulated artillery explosions that are actually dangerous. Spratt is then lured back to the bear's house only to find they have been shot, and is attacked by the Gingerbreadman who manages to escape. One clue left by the papa bear leads to a member of parliament that is friendly to the community of anthropomorphic bears who lives in Reading. Jack eventually understands that it is false trail, and that the real culprit is a fourth bear bearing the same initials and the lover the mama bear in the house and head of the secretive National Service who has been harrassing Jack during his investigation. Jack's team then disarms a nuclear device that was set to explode in the bear district: a giant cucumber that is able to extract deuterium and tritium from water and that, when reaching the critical mass of 50 kg is able to self-ignite. Returning to SommeWorld, Jack confronts the head of QuangTech, who is associated with the fourth bear. They escape while the Gingerbreadman (for whom Jack has found proof that he was made by the now-defunct experiment weapons division of QuangTech) plays a vicious game of cat and mouse with the detectvie. Immune to bullets due to his biscuit-texture, Jack uses the offices' sprinkler system to soak and disable him.

In a world where police detectives are ranked based on whether their investigation makes a good story, DI Jack Spratt works in Reading at the Nursery Crime Division. It threatens to be closed because, unless his famous rival Chymes, Spratt does not try to embellish his investigations, which don't make good stories. Spratt is tasked to investigate the death of Humpty Dumpty. The latter is known to have been involved in shady business, making money quickly and loosing it equally quickly, but apparently always with a noble purpose. Before his death, he bought a large number of shares of the once-flourishing Spongg Footcare company and pledged to make a huge donation to the St Cerebellum psychiatric hospital where he had been a patient for forty years. Forensic analysis then reveals that Humpty has been shot. Several people of interest are found dead during the investigation: a neighbour who may have seen the shooter, a man who had stolen the golden egg goose and murdered the woodcutter owning it (an case for which Chymes completely made up the investigation a year earlier) who was killed a year earlier by Humpty's ex-wife who thought she was killing Humpty, said ex-wife who then committed suicide, an ex-professor from the Foot Museum who had stolen the world's largest verruca in order to make a super verruca virus at the same time as its cure. The evidence leads to Spongg who would benefit from the epidemic by selling the cure and who plans to remarry Lola Vavoom, Humpty's wife since two weeks before his death and who inherits Humpty's shares of Speongg Footcare. A late forensic analysis shows that Humpty, basically a giant egg, had however been fertilized by Dr Quatt, a mad scientists working at St Cerebellum. The egg hatched just as Humpty was shot, freeing a killer dinosaur genetically created by Dr Spatt, St Cerebellum's resident mad scientist, in order to exact vengeance on the Jellyman, a mystical political leader who is in Reading for a ceremony in a place where people have to be barefoot (where the virus would have started the epidemic). Jack fights but fails to catch Spongg at his surrealistic mansion before finally fighting the monster at his mother's house where a giant beanstalk happens to be growing.

Largo et Jarod Manskind parviennent à rentrer sain et sauf sur Terre. Simon parvient à trouver des documents indiquant que les parts de la mine d'étain ont été rachetées par le groupe de Manskind et qu'un détail légal lui permettrait d'en prendre possession. Jarod préside ensuite une réunion des 100 personnes les plus riches du monde pour leur demander de donner chacune un milliard pour coloniser Mars, mais il se fait assassiner par les mêmes tueurs qui avaient saboté son avion spatial. Largo parvient à arrêter leur chef qui révèle avoir été payé par la femme de Jarod. Lorsque Largo l'interroge, elle avoue que le groupe qu'elle dirige dans l'ombre est criblé de dettes et qu'elle voulait se débarrasser de lui.

Une entité extra-terrestre fonce sur Golden City juste avant de s'arrêter. Ressemblant à un astéroïde, elle est transportée à l'intérieur pour être étudiée mais s'échappe et se cache. Pendant ce temps, le pilote de la ville allume les moteurs et la dirige sans permission vers la Terre. Cela cause une panique et le chaos dans la cité. Cette dernière finit par amerrir en causant un tsunami, tandis que l'entité s'échappe par une voie d'eau causée par l'accident.

Pröfy retombe en enfance après s'être fait mordre par une bête et le pouvoir aléatoire de Waha l'échange avec Pikäl, un troll des îles. Ce dernier les accompagne vers son île en empruntant successivement plusieurs navires et en suivant les indication du capitaine pirate qu'il s'apprêtait à manger. Pröfy se fait cependant enlever, avec toutes la tribu de Pikäl, par des chasseurs de trolls qui les emmènent sur l'île de Chelonia, justement là où Waha s'arrête pour prendre des provisions. Elle retrouve Pröfy sur un marché aux trolls esclaves, massacre tour le monde avant que le guérisseur de la tribu de Pikäl ne soigne Pröfy en lui tapant sur la tête avec un fruit magique, une noix de coco.

César envoie son médecin Vicévertus enseigner la pensée positive aux légionnaires entourant le petit village gaulois afin de leur redonner leur combattivité. Il fait de même dand le village, otant la combattivité des habitants. Vicévertus veut offrir Bonemine en cadeau à César et la convainc de quitter Abraracourcix pour se rendre avec lui à Lutèce. Astérix et Obélix accompagnent leur chef, déprimé, à Lutèce et finissent par retrouver Bonemine au théâtre et à la ramener au village.

Un oncle de Clifton, chasseur en Afrique, est assassiné. Peu après, le père de Clifton est abattu dans la maison du détective, disant à son fils avant de mourir d'aller parler à son notaire. Ce dernier révèle l'existence d'un ancien pacte signé par un ancêtre de Clifton qui permet au comté de Puddington de devenir français à la mort du dernier Clifton. Et Napoléon XI cherche justement à les éliminer. L'autre oncle de Clifton est tué par une urne funéraire piégée après l'enterrement du père, mais le notaire et Miss Partridge finissent par éliminer Napoléon en lui tirant dessus avec le char d'assaut du père (une disposition du testament exige la présence du blindé à l'enterrement). Finalement, pour éviter au comté de devenir français, tous les amis de Clifton changent de nom pour devenir des Cliftons.

Masquerade in Lodi

In Lodi on the eve of the Bastard's Day, Penric is asked to check if a madman who had just been saved from the sea by fishermen. The man is confused because he got a demon from a dying dolphin. Soon after Penric makes his diagnostic, the man flees the hospital and hides in the city. Penric seeks the help from Chio, the local saint, a young woman living in an orphanage, the only kind of person who can free the man from its demon. They manage to identify the man as Ree, the son of a local merchant who was at sea with his cousin Merin. They eventually find Ree hiding in a warehouse, fighting Merin who is trying to kill him. After Penric has immobilized the two men and Chio has returned the demon to its god, Ree reveals that Merin had thrown him overboard because he suspected him of stealing.

The Orphans of Raspay

On his way back home to Orbas, Penric's ship is boarded by pirates and he is taken prisoner. He befriends two orphan children who also are prisoner. On the island of Lantihera, controlled by pirates and slavers, Penric manages to keep the two children safe, and takes them with him when he escapes. He first rescues the sailors from his ship form the jail where they were waiting to be sold as slaves, but afraid of the sorcerer, they flee the island without him. Penric then wreaks havoc in the harbour, sinking ships and burning buildings, but with little chance of finding a ship on which to flee. He and the two children are then saved in the nick of time by his brother-in-law Adelis who was sent with a fleet to put a stop to the pirates' activities. Penric then goes back home with the children and places them as apprentices in a house of his order.

The Physicians of Vilnoc

Adelis asks Penric to investigate a mysterious disease that is killing a lot of his soldiers. Penric can use his magic to help the sick get step-by-step better, but the situation becomes desperate as the number of sick people increases and the mode of contagion cannot be determined (a wild experiment conducted by the only remaining army physician on himself proves it's not transmitted by the fleas on the rats). Penric also sends letters asking neighbouring cities to send sorcerers, but they remain unanswered. From a nearby camp of Rusylli prisoners he learns the name of the disease to be the blue witch. The arrival of Dubro, a inexperienced b fast-learning sorcerer, provides help, but as Adelis comes back from an expedition the number of sick soldiers increases again. During a desperate prayer to the Bastard, Penric is bitten by a blue fly. He also discovers that the army parks just outside the garrison sick and dying horses that suffer from the same disease. He then understand that all horses must be screened and the sick ones must be killed and burnt. This action and the sorcerers killing as many flies as they can allows to stop the epidemic and for Penric to go back home.

Penric's Mission

Penric is on a diplomatic mission to Patos to contact General Adelis Arisaydia who seems to want to defect to Adria. Upon arrival he is arrested as a spy and left to drown in an underground cell. After escaping, he discovers that the general has been blinded on orders of the emperor of Patos who fears he would try and seize power for himself. The Arisaydia is under the care of his sister Nikys and Penric, feeling guilty of having provided the emperor with an excuse to attack his rival, presents himself to Nikys as a physician and over the course of a week manages to repair his eyes, secretly using sorcery. When the emperor's men come to ensure Arisaydia has indeed become harmless they find out he can actually see and attack him. Penric neutralizes them and takes the general and is sister with him away from the city. Penric wants to take them to Adria, but the general believes that Orbas is easier and safer. They flee for a couple of days, until the emperor's men catch up with them, accompanied by another sorcerer. Penric fights him and wins, killing or chasing away the rest of the soldiers.

Mira's Last Dance

Penric, Arisaydia and Nikys are still fleeing from Patos and find refuge at a bordello in Sosie. In exchange for food and shelter, Penric rids the place and the customers of the lice and other parasites and even treats the owner's breast cancer. Easily recognizable, Penric decides to disguise himself as Mira, the fifth rider of his demon and a rich and independent woman, eccentric enough to be accompanied by two masked servants, Adelis and Nikys. To test his Mira persona, Penric mingles among the customers and catches the eye of General Chadro who insists on spending the night with Mira. Mira's personality convinces Penric that Chadro could provide the money they need to continue their travels towards Orbas, so she takes over, promising Penric he would not even need to take his clothes off. Nikys, who has started to get attracted to Penric notices that if she marries him she would also marry Desdemona and all the past personalities, which puts her off. The purse however let them rent a carriage with horses. When they almost reach the border, they are caught up by a group of soldiers, but instead of being arrested, it is Chadro who attempts one last time to convince Mira to marry him. In Orbas, they are welcomed by the duke who hires all three of them. Some weeks later, as Adelis already left to fight for the duke, Penric proposes to Nikys but she refuses as she does not want to have to share Penric with all the other personalities.

The Prisoner of Limnos

In Orbas, Nikys receives a coded message from Lady Tanar, the woman in Thasalon Adelis was meant to marry before falling into disgrace. The message informs her that her mother was taken prisoner and sent to the island of Limnos, in a retreat of the Daughter's Order from which she cannot leave. Nikys asks Penric to accompany her to Limnos and free her mother. They first visit Tanar in secret, who welcomes them and agrees to help them. As only women are allowed in the retreat, Tanar and Nikys disguise Penric into a woman. The plan is to find Nikys' mother and exchange her with Penric. The latter will give them the night to escape as far as possible from Limnos before himself escaping, somehow and rejoining them in Akylaxio. They are accompanied by Bosha, Tanar's faithful servant since her childhood. The retreat is an impregnable fortress at the top of a cliff a thousand feet tall. The plan goes well, but in the middle of the night Penric is woken up by a man who entered through the window: Nikys' half-brother Ikos who is a bridge builder and who had also planned to save his mother. Penric and Ikos escape using the latter's rope-and-pulleys contraption. The manage to leave the island on a ship belonging to friends of Ikos' and meet with Nikys and her mother who also managed to reach Akylaxio. As they go through customs, an imperial courier arrives with probably a description of the fugitive. Using his powers, Penric puts a geas on him, making him forget his mission. They then embark on a ship for Orbas. During the trip, Nikys discusses with Desdemona, comes to terms with Penric hosting multiple personalities.

Penric's Demon

Penric is the youngest son of a minor noble in the Weald. One the morning of his arranged wedding, he crosses path with an old woman just as she dies of a heart attack. The woman is a sorceress hosting a demon and the latter jumps to Penric. As demons are normally given only to people who have been prepared for many years to receive one and dominate it, Penric is considered as potentially dangerous. The wedding is cancelled and Penric is taken by the local religious authority to the house of the Bastard's Order in Martensbridge where the scholars should know what to do. On the way there, Penric discovers little by little that the demon can talk through his mouth and decides to name it Desdemona. Desdemona is 200 years old and contains the knowledge of the twelve women who have previously hosted her. Over time, her knowledge of different languages percolate into Penric's mind, allowing him to read many books in the library of the Bastard's Order's house. Desdemona also teaches Penric rudiments of sorcery like killing fleas or lighting a candle at a distance. In Martensbridge, Penric bunks with the younger brother of the local lord. One evening, the latter invites him to dinner in his castle. The two brothers want to kill Penric in order to force Desdemona to jump to one of them, but the demon detects the drugged wine and gives Penric enough extra power so that he can fight them, escape and walk back to the house. He is then presented to a Saint who has the power to extract demons, but the Saint declares that his god does not want the demon. He apparently has plans for Penric.

Penric and the Shaman

Working for the princess-archdivine of Martensbridge, Penric is associated to Locator Oswyl, an investigator of the Father's Order in Easthome. Their task is to find Inglis, a shaman suspected of having murdered his teacher, Tollin and who recently fled from the city. After a chase through the countryside, they arrive in a mountain region where they learn about shamanism, which consists in “breeding” the soul of an animal through the lives of many animals in order to produce a Great Beast whose soul can be received by a human, becoming a shaman. Penric and Oswyl learn that a recent landslide has killed Scuolla, the local shaman, and that they urgently need to find another shaman to help Scuolla's soul moving forward and prevent it from becoming a ghost. They finally find Inglis, but the latter has lost his shamanic abilities due to what he has done. Oswyl also explains that Tollin had an accident during training and was dying, so Oswyl used the knife to anchor his soul until it can be given to a new shaman. Penric spends some time restoring Oswyl's confidence. Eventually the shaman is able to perform the rites on Scuolla's soul. Some time after being back in Martensbridge, Penric receives a letter from Inglis explaining that he was not found guilty of murder and only put on probation and fined.

Penric's Fox

Penric accompanies the princess-archdivine on a journey to Easthome. There he spends some time with Inglis. One day, Oswyl asks Inglis and Penric to help him investigate the murder of a sorceress and if possible recover her demon. The demon seems to have jumped to a passing fox. The investigation leads them to Wegae kin Pikepool, the local baron, more of a bookworm than a warrior, and who has inherited the estate after his uncle escaped trial for having murdered his wife. With the help of local shamans they manage to detect the missing demons and find the fox (actually a female with cubs). They also discover that Baron Wegae's gardener has been trapping foxes without killing them, and that a mysterious man seems to hide nearby. The man happens to be Wegaes's uncle who has come back to take revenge on the demon, whom he blames for having told the authorities, throuhg the sorceress who hosted it, that he killed his wife. The culprit is finally brought to justice, the vixen and her cubs are taken in the shamans' menagerie until the cubs can become independent and the demon can be extracted from the fox by a Saint of the Bastard. Penric negotiates with his employer a year of leave so that he can study with the shamans before being sent elsewhere to study medicine.

The village of Wall marks the border of the land of the Faeries. Seventeen years earlier, Tristran Thorn is born from a human father and a faerie mother, Una, slave of Semele, a witch who sells glass flowers at the Faerie market that takes place once every nine years. In love with Victoria, Tristran witnesses the fall of a star into the faerie land and promises to bring to her. At the beginning of his journey he meets a strange little man who, after being saved by Tristran's unexpected sense of direction, gives him the stub of a magical candle that takes him very quickly to the star. Instead of a rock, he finds a young woman with a broken leg, Yvaine. She is the star, who has been knocked out of the sky by the dying lord of Stronghold. The latter has thrown the pendant representing the power of his family out though the window and told his three remaining sons, Primus, Tertius and Septimus, that the one who finds it would be his heir. At the same time, a witch-queen, oldest of three sisters, is also searching for the star, as her heart would restore their youth. Upon fining Yvaine, Tristran has first chained her to him, but as he unchains her out of compassion, she flees on the unicorn she is riding. She ends up in an inn conjured by the witch-queen at about the same time as Tristran arrives in the company of Primus. The man is killed by the witch-queen, but Tristran and Yvaine manage to escape thanks to the leftover of the candle and are stranded on a cloud in the sky. Septimus, who has previously killed Tertius, is eventually killed by the witch-queen in an attempt to avenge Primus' death. Tristran and Yvaine are rescued by a flying ship which takes them closer to Wall. They eventually reach their destination by traveling with Semele (Tristran being turned into a dormouse, and Yvaine being invisible to the witch), a few days before the opening of the market. Tristran meets Victoria alone, and she tells him she is going to get married soon. Tristran gives her his blessing, having fallen in love with Yvaine. Victoria's wedding is the event that ends the convoluted curse that kept Una a slave to Semele. Una reveals herself as Tristran's mother and also daughter of the Lord of Stronghold. Yvaine then presents Tristran the pendant, which she has been carrying. The witch-queen dies of old age, as Yvaine already gave her heart to Tristran. Una returns to Stronghold and rule in her son's stead. Many years later, Tristran and Yvaine return to Stronghold and rule together.
