L'autre monde est le prototype de notre monde, où le ciel est réellement une toile noire sur lequel les étoiles sont accrochées et où les enfants sont apportés par des cigognes. Un soir, tous les chats disparaissent, le lendemain les enfants, attirés par une créature jouant de la flûte sont apperçus marchant vers un trou dans la terre. Le Brigadier du village et Jan, voyageur de notre monde arrivé dans l'autre monde dans le cycle précédent, sont mordus par la créature. Le lendemain, la Mort vient les chercher et les conduit vers le trou. Ils y déscendent, se perdent, remontent au hasard et arrivent à une chateau qui se révèle plein de vampires. Un très vieux vampire les aide à s'échapper. Mais en même temps, Blanche, la compagne de Jan, décide de partir à sa recherche, après que le professeur lui ait révélé que ce trou est la porte des Enfers.

Philip reçoit une lettre posthume du professeur Miloch qui lui lègue (pour la deuxième fois) son héritage scientifique. Il s'agit en fait d'un piège (déguisé en manège pour enfants) qui propulse les deux héros dans un monde parallèle où leurs alter-egos n'exercent pas les mêmes professions et se connaissent même pas. Ils découvrent que l'alter-ego d'Olrik est sur le point d'épouser la reine dans le but de devenir le maître du monde. Les deux héros font échouer le plan au moment où le mariage va être prononcé. Ils tentent ensuite de rentrer dans leur monde et y parviennent finalement, au détail près que dans celui où ils arrivent, Philip est marié.

Troisième volume des aventures d'Oksa Pollock

Les Sauve-Qui-Peut partent délivrer Marie sur l'île d'Orthon. Les circonstances les poussent à former une alliance avec les Félons, ces derniers ayant en leur possession l'objet qui permet d'ouvrir le portail vers Edelfia, mais seuls les Sauve-Qui-Peut savent où ce dernier se trouve. Au cours de leur séjour, Gus transmet à Oksa la maladie qu'une morsure de Chiroptère d'Orthon lui avait infligée. Cette maladie provoque de fortes douleurs jusqu'à la puberté, et Orthon leur donne un remède temporaire qui les fait vieillir instantanément pour passer ce cap. Mais ils ont tous deux besoin du remède qui ne peut être produit qu'à Edelfia, car il nécessite un composé produit par les Diaphans lorsque ces derniers absorbent les sentiments amoureux d'une personne. Le Foldingot de Dragomira révèle que le portail s'ouvrira dans 12 jours dans le désert de Gobi. Les Sauve-Qui-Peut et les Félons s'y rendent tant bien que mal malgré les catastrophes naturelles, mais seuls les Du-Dedans peuvent entrer, au prix de la mort de Dragomira. Gus et Marie, entre autres, restent à l'extérieur et finissent par rentrer à Londres. À Edelfia, les Sauve-Aui-Peut sont arrêtés par les gens d'Ocious, le père d'Orthon, qui règne en dictateur et aui rève d'envahir Du-Dehors ; il a besoin qu'Oksa soit intronisée Gracieuse pour rouvrir le passage. Oksa est guérie par Ocious grâce au dernier Diaphan d'Edelfia et du sacrifice des sentiments de Zoé envers Gus, ce qui déprime fortement Oksa et empêche l'ouverture de la Chambre de la Pèlerine, nécessaire à son intronisation. Oksa rencontre alors Dragomira, devenue Sans-Âge, qui lui montre que sa mère et Gus vont bien, ce qui lui redonne du courage.

Ari Mackenzie est un analyste de la DCRI en congé maladie pour dépression après que ses supérieurs aient brutalement classé l'affaire sur laquelle il travaillait (voir volume précédent que je n'ai pas lu). Ari décide de reprendre l'enquête après que son appartement et celui de deux de ses collègues et amis aient été cambriolés, dans le but évident de mettre la main sur des documents trouvés lors de l'enquête précédente. Ari part à la recherche du mystérieux Docteur Weldon, féru d'esotérisme et d'hermétisme, impliqué dans l'enquête précédente. En fouillant une résidence présumée de Weldon, Ari rencontre la fille d'un géologue disparu, qui travaille pour une organisation dirigée par Weldon. Cette organisation discrète appartient à une agence internationale de protection de l'environnement, et son but précis est inconnu. L'agence en revanche est accusée d'acheter d'immenses territoires dans le but d'y protéger la nature, mais accorde en même temps, de façon cachée, des permis d'expoitation minière sur ces territoires. Au cours de son enquête, Mackenzie découvre que Weldon est à la recherche d'un minerai fabuleux découvert par Nicolas Flamel en déchiffrant d'anciens parchemins, les mêmes que Mackenzie a retrouvés au cours de la précédente enquête, minerai qui permettrait d'augmenter énormément le rendement des panneaux solaires. Grâce à deux employés de Weldon qui se sont échappés du centre de recherches où ils etaient littéralement prisonniers et qui ont averti la fille du géologue disparu, Mackenzie et ses deux collègues partent pour l'Amazonie. Ils trouvent la cachette de Weldon vide, mais finissent par retrouver sa trace un peu plus loin. Weldon parvient à mettre la main sur le gisement original du minerai, mais meurt brûlé par celui-ci. En retrant en Europe, Mackenzie aidé d'un collègue du renseignement de l'Union Européenne met à jour la trahison du secrétaire général adjoint du conseil de l'Europe et du ministre de l'intérieur Français, qui avaient retiré leur soutien à Weldon après avoir passé un accord secret avec des membres de l'OPEP, ces derniers voulant conserver le contrôle de l'énergie dans le monde.

Masada is a planet controlled by the Theocracy, a religious, totalitarian regime. With the help of the Polity, a pan-planetary empire, the rebels overthrow the Theocracy and Masada joins the Polity. During the final days of the rebellion, a Theocracy proctor named Tombs is attacked by the Technician, a gigantic predatory lifeform called a hooder, one of the strange and few lifeforms on Masada. The Technician skins Tombs alive, but leaves something in his mind. Polity scientists repair Tombs body, and then wait twenty years for his mind to recover. Two million of years ago, Masada was the home to the Atheter, a species that committed global suicide to escape the Jain technology, a technological virus that was taking over their society. The humans on Masada step by step discover that the gabbleducks, large pyramid-shaped animals, are what is left of the Atheter species. The latter had built a Device, currently hiding somewhere in space, that erases intelligence, and the gabbleducks are thus dumbed-down Atheters. The hooders are war machines, and the Technician was used by one Atheter known as the Weaver as a way to safekeep his mind (not all Atheters agreed to commit suicide). When the Device detects again the presence of intelligence on Masada, it comes back to erase it again, but the Polity people organize to fight it, with little success. The Weaver's mind leaves Tombs' brain and enters the one of a gabbleduck, reviving the Atheter race, and directs the Technician in a (successful) attempt at destroying the Device, thus saving the planet.

Sursamen is a shell-world, an artificial “planet” made of fifteen concentric layers. On the eigth level live the Sarl, who are trying to conquer the Deldeyn, inhabitants of the ninth level. These not-yet-advanced civilizations are supervized by another race, the Oct, who are themselves supervised by yet another race, and so on. Hausk, king of the Sarl, is wounded in battle and then murdered by his closest counsellor tyl Loesp. Prince Ferbin is accidentally witness to the scene. He knows that tyl Loesp will be trying to kill him next, so with the help of his manservant Holse he tries to reach the surface of Sursamen and from there hopes to find Hyrlis, a Culture agent who was a friend of Hausk. Ferben hopes the Culture, who has spies everywhere, would have recorded tyl Loesp's treason so that he can prove his guilt. After a long and complicated travel through many worlds Ferbin and Holse finally find Hyrlis, but he is now an outcast from the Culture and cannot help the prince. Ferbin then tries to locate his sister Djan Seriy, who had left Sursamen to become an agent for the Culture's Specian Circumstances service. Having heard of her father's death, she is herself travelling towards Sursamen. Meanwhile, Ferbin's younger brother Oramen has become Prince Regent under tyl Loesp's supervision, until he comes of age (Ferbin is officially dead, even though tyl Loesp learns the truth and tries to get him killed). Tyl Loesp planes to get Oramen killed eventually and names him governor of the just-conquered Deldeyn capital on the ninth level, in order to keep him away from the court on the Sarl's level. Oramen also supervises an archeological dig in a very difficult area that has just been made possible by a rare “astronomical” event (it still all happens inside one level of Sursamen). The Oct have actually manipulated tyl Loesp so that he takes over the ninth level in time to control the archeological research, and secures the artefact, the Sarcophagus, that lies at the bottom of it. The Oct are convinced the Sarcophagus contains one of their ancestor, conserved in stasis for billions of years. But the creature is actually an Iln, a destroyer of shellworlds. Allowed to escape, the Iln kills everyone around it (including tyl Loesp's army who was attacking to kill Oramen, Oramen, and the whole Sarl settlement on the ninth level) and then plunges at the core of the shellworld where lives a Xinthian (rare, gigantic creatures that live at the bottom of shellworld and maintain them), know the the Sarl as the WorldGod. Djan Seriy, Ferbin and Holse arrive just in time to chase the Iln and kill it. Djan Seriy and Ferbin die in the attempt.

Jernau Gurgeh is the best player of the Culture. He is offered by Contact (the exploration and diplomatic affairs branch of the Culture) the opportunity to play Azad, the game that is at the heart of the Azad empire. Empires tend to fall appart by themselves, but this one, where the skill at the game determinates one's rank in the society, has survived for a long time. Gurgeh accepts the offer and travels to Azad, learning the game on his way there, reaching the empire just in time for the tournament. He manages to beat all of his opponents despite attempts by the Imperial Office to discredit him (he was expected to lose early in the tournament), but eventually faces the emperor himself. The latter is a sore looser and attempts to kill Gurgeh, himself and everyone around him when he discovers that this alien is better than him at the game. Gurgeh is saved in the nick of time by the drone who was accompanying him. The drone eventually reveals to Gurgeh that his true mission was not a diplomatic one, but was to discredit the game of Azad so that the empire would fall apart and be eventually absorbed into the Culture.

Quatorzième volume de Trolls de Troy publié en 2010, ou l'on apprend que Waha est la fille de Rysta Fuquatou et d'une prostituée. Les personnes qui avaient été payées pour emporter l'encombrant bébé au loin ont été mangées par Teträm et sa famille, et cette dernière recueille donc l'enfant qu'elle nomme Waha (à cause de sa manière tonitruante de pleurer). La mère biologique de Waha veut retrouver sa fille pour la faire travailler dans sa maison close et plus tard assurer sa succession à la tête de l'entrerprise. Fuquatou l'emmène jusque chez les trolls (il a retrouvé l'histoire de Waha dans les archives du conservatoire) et l'y laisse de faire dévorer par Teträm et sa famille.

Dix-septième tome de Largo Winch. Le président de la Winch Merchant Fleet est assassiné le jour de son départ à la retraite. Son assistante avait un peu plus tôt enlevé la fille du directeur de la banqui suisse qui conserve l'argent de Largo pour le forcer à effectuer un virement compromettant. Le tueur, un pécheur turc agissant pour venger la mort de son fils, est assassiné peu après. Le FBI tente d'arrêter Largo à cause du virement qui aurait servi à acheter des armes, mais ce dernier s'nfuit en Suisse. Il apprend l'enlèvement de la fille de son banquier et charge Simon d'utiliser ses anciennes connexions avec la pègre suisse pour la retrouver et la délivrer. Pendant ce temps, Largo part enquêter un Turquie, mais est fait prisonnier sur un porte-conteneurs par ses adversaires, encore inconnus. Simon, lui, se fait arrêter par la police suisse à cause de son passé. À suivre.

Vingt-cinquième tome de Yoko Tsuno. Yoko et Emilia découvrent en Écosse une androïde enterré depuis huit-cents ans par des moines qui la considéraient comme la servante de Lucifer. Yoko appelle son amie vinéenne Khâny qui participe sur Terre à une mission de rapatriement de colons Vinéens en hibernation sous Terre. L'androïde est identifiée comme venant de la zone interdite, où des colons vinées belliqueux avaient été parqués. Le seul survivant se faisait passer pour Lucifer auprès des humains et avant envoyé l'androïde en reconnaissance à la surface. Lucifer profite de l'occasion pour tenter de s'échapper mais se fait finalement tuer. La zone interdite est à nouveau scellée.

Vingtième aventure de Blake et Mortimer, faisant suite au tome 1. Blake rejoint Mortimer et, après une tentative ratée d'arrêter l'ancien Nazi, ils partent à la recherche du tombeau de Judas, caché dans la grotte que les anciens grecs prenaient pour l'enfer. Leur ennemi les y attendait déjà, et s'empare des vingt-neuf deniers. À ce moment, Judas se lève de sa tombe, l'ancien Nazi est foudroyé et la grotte s'effondre dans un tremblement de terre provoqué semble-t-il par la colère divine. Nos héros parviennent à s'échapper, mais Olrik en reste prisonnier.

Deuxième tome des Gardiens de Ji par Pierre Grimbert. Les petits enfants des héritiers sont rejoints par Zejabel qui leur apprend que leurs parents sont morts dans l'incendie de leur navire en allant sur l'île Ji pour vérifier si le corps de Sombre était toujours dans son tombeau, après que Ke'b'ree leur ait rencontré un vieillard qu'il a identifié comme étant l'ex-dieu Usul, qui lui avai annoncé que Sombre était de retour avant de disparaître. Zejabel en a réchappé car elle avait quitté le navire peu avant avec la chaloupe. Les six petits-enfants accompagnés de Zejabel et de Souanne la légionnaire décident d'aller sur l'ile Ji pour voir si le tombeau est effectivement vide et dans l'espoir de peut-être retrouver leurs parents. Ils sont à nouveau attaqués par les sorcier et ses hommes mais parviennent à s'enfuir. Lorilis se découvre des pouvoirs magiques, tandis que Guederic et Souanne découvrent leur soif de tuer qu'ils essaient de contrôler. Ils décident d'aller voler les notes d'Amanón concernant les manuscrits Éthèques dans son bureau de la Légion Grise de Lorelia, où ils rencontrent à nouveau leurs adversaires. Les notes sont chiffrées, et Lorilis devine que Damián en détient sans le savoir la clé. Ils se rendent ensuite sur l'île d'Usul où ils rencontrent effectivement l'ancien dieu, qui révèle à Najel (pendant que les autres sont attaqués par des indigènes venus faire un sacrifice humain) que son père est au Jal (qui est censé avoir disparu) et que leur adversaire est en fait Saat le sorcier.

Third volume of The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson, following The Confusion. Divided into three books, Solomon's Gold, Currency and The System of the World.

Solomon's Gold

1714. Invited by Princess Caroline, Daniel Waterhouse returns to London after twenty years in Massachusets where he founded the Institute for Technologickal Arts. Caroline wants him to mend the philosophical gap between Leibniz, who has been her mentor, and Isaac Newton, currently Master of the Royal Mint. On his way back he meets Newcomen, building an Engine for Litfing Water by Fire and is looking for investors. Soon after Daniel's arrival at the Royal Society, he is injured by an infernal machine, an explosive ignited by clockwork. With the help of a few other people, he starts investigating to find the maker of the bomb. A second bomb destroys a ship being build for Peter the Great, czar of Russia, and the shipwright joins in the investigation. Daniel then visits Newton and learns that he is still looking for the Solomonic gold, which is infused with whatever principle animates the human body. Daniel remembers, from his time on Minerva crossing the ocean, that the ship contained unusual ballast, and soon understands that it is the Gold Isaac is looking for. As a Master of the Mint, Newton also fights coiners, and one of them is especially dificult to locate. While Newton is sent to a wild goose chase, Jack the Coiner invest the tower of London and places fake coins in the Pyx (a strongbox where samples of fresly minted coins are placed) after literally showering fake gold guineas over the city, in order to discredit Newton's work as a Master of the Mint.

Currency

In Hanover, Caroline is targeted by assassins, and with the help of Eliza and her son Johann she flees to London incognito. There she meets Daniel who tries to convince Eliza to invest in his Logic Mill, a prototype of a “thinking machine” that Leibniz had asked him to build. Data is fed to the machine with punched cards made of (solomonic) gold. Peter the Great is another investor in the project, and all the cards are planned to be shipped to Saint Petersburg when they are made. Meanwhile, Daniel also tries to locate artifacts made by Hooke in the early days of the Royal Society to send to the czar who wants to train his philosophers and start his own philosophical society. In the Bedlam asylum, he finds a note by Hooke that proves that he did die whe Hooke performed a lithotomy on him and that he was revived by Enoch the Red who used an alchemical formula transcribed by Hooke on the note. With the help of a thief catcher, Daniel also tries to catch Jack the coiner, who is believed to be the maker of the bombs. The thief catcher is actually Jack in disguise. He escapes Newton but gives to Daniel one of the original coin samples he had taken from the Pyx, which; through complex political mechanisms, destitutes the Tory government, in favour to a catholic king, and replaces it with Whigs who are in favor of the Hanover family. Soon after, Peter the Great arrives incognito in London to receive the ships built for him. He is accompanied by Solomon Kohan, a Jew who forces Daniel to promis to use only Solomonic gold to make the punch cards, and to deliver the whole amount of that gold to the czar. As a gift, he gives Daniel a ring made from some of the punched out bits. The gold is taken out of Minerva's bilge and hidden in the Bank of England.

The System of the World

Jack is finally arrested, and a connection is found between the Tories, the bombs (the target was Newton) and the plan to debase the gold guinea and discredit the Whigs and preven Georg of Hanover to become the next king. Daniel, Eliza and Caroline force Leibniz and Newton to meet and discuss about their philosophical disagreements, but have no success in resolving their differences. Jack, in prison, promises Daniel to return the gold stolen from the Pyx in exchange for the freedom of his two sons (who were his accomplices), whom Daniel manages to help escape from prison. But at the same time Jack tells Newton that Daniel has all the gold, and Daniel has to liquidate his whole Logic Mill operation and ship the gold out in a rush. Newton discovers Daniel's implication in the escape of Jack's sons and has a stroke. Additionally, he suffers from gaol fever and is on the brink of death. He tells Daniel that he has found Enoch's formula from Hooke's descriptions. After the coronation of George II, the trial of the Pyx takes place, the same day as Jack's execution. During the trial of the Pyx, the samples (shards from the coins) being tested are replaced with shards made by Daniel from his ring. Isaac is present, hidden in a sedan chair, but he is actually recently dead. While the trial takes place, Daniel feeds Isaac Enoch's potion, and he wakes up just in time for the end of the trial, which had shown that Isaac's coins are pure gold. At the same time, Jack survives (barely) his hanging and is taken away by the Mobb. During the religious ceremony that preceded, he understand that Enoch the Red is none other than Enoch, son of Cain.

In the epilogues, Jack lives at Versailles with Eliza (who wouldn't set eyes on him until he has died). Jack's sons are in Carolina. Daniel sees Newcomen's engine working, and doesn't expect his logic mill to be built before another century; probably only needs of war will resurrect such a project. Daniel then decides to return home to Massachusets.

Second volume of The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson, following Quicksilver. Divided into two books, Bonanza and Juncto, the volume alternate between one and the other to place the narration in chronological order.

Bonanza

1689. Jack has lost his memory due to syphillitis, but slowly wakes up in Algiers as a galley slave. With some companions they form a Cabal, and plan to rob silver from a spanish ship with the help of their owner who would get a share of it. The theft succeeds, but instead of silver they find gold. They are chased by the Duke of Arcachon who expected to steal this gold for himself (through his privateers). In Cairo, Jack and his companions finally confront the Duke and Jack, knowing the the same man had enslaved Eliza years before, cuts his head off and sents it back to France. The Cabal then flees to India, where Jack stays for some years and meets Enoch Root again. The Cabal uses part of the gold to build a ship, with which they carry wootz steel, silk and spices to Japan, where they exchange it against quicksilver. They then cross the Pacific Ocean toward New Spain where they sell the quicksilver to various silver mines. While a part of the Cabal remains on the ship, sell more quicksilver to silver mines in Peru and cross the Cape Horn, Jack and other members of the Cabal walk through Mexico (and are inbetween arrested by the Inquisition, but manage to get released). They rejoin the crew of the ship, and, since Jack received a letter from Eliza asking him to join her in Qwghlm. The letter was however a forgery, and Jack is made prisoner by the son of the late Duke of Arcachon who wants revenge for his father's death and also wants to recover the gold stolen thirteen years earlier from the spanish ship. Jack also learns he was betrayed by one of his companion, who was himself let to believe that his family suffered a lot because of Jack. The gold is said to come from the mines of King Solomon and have special alchemical properties. Jack claims it was all used for building the ship. D'Arcachon lets the remaining members of the Cabal (several died or quit over the past years) leave with their ship, only to notice that the hull of the ship, under the waterline, is plated with gold. Jack is eventually taken back to France.

Juncto

1689. Eliza's wealth has been stolen by Jean Bart the privateer in the name of the King of France Louis XIV. Eliza knows she has to accept this if she wants to stay away from prison, and she soon starts doing business as usual. She is also invited by the Duke of Arcachon, and eventually recognizes him, from the smell of rotten fish, that he is the one who made her a slave when she was young. She wants to poison him at his birthday party, but on that day, she learns that the Duke had been killed in Cairo by Jack. She is then forced to marry the Duke's son to protect herself. When von Hackelheber learns that the Solomon gold has been stolen by Jack, he believes that Eliza is also behind it, and he kidnaps her son. For revenge, Eliza organizes a transfer of fund from Lyon to Hackelheber's offices in London. Thanks to the help of her friend Jean Bart, Hackelheber's silver is stolen, and the banker is ruined. Eliza also helps Bob Shaftoe, Jack's brother and soldier in the English army, to save the love of his life who is a slave owned by an English lord. Bob kills the lord during a battle, and later goes and frees her, marrying her on the spot. Meanwhile, Daniel Waterhouse manages to convince Newton to become the new head of the Royal Mint. In the end. Jack has arrived in France and meets with Louis XIV who orders him to go back to England and sabotage the Royal Mint to prevent England to become a strong power again. In the same meeting, Jack also meets Eliza, who quickly tells hime they must not see each other again if they want to stay alive. Jack then goes back to London. Also, on her way back from the Rhine in the previous book, Eliza had taken under her protection a German heiress and her daughter Caroline. After the death of the mother, Eliza placed the daughter in the care of Leibniz. Caroline is pressented to become the next queen of England.

Quicksilver

1713. Daniel Waterhouse is convinced by Enoch Root to leave Massachussets and return to England to defuse a conflict between supporters of Leibnitz and those of Newton as who invented calculus. While his ship is under attack by pirates, trying to leave the coasts of Massachusets, Daniel remembers his youth from 1661 to 1673. Daniel has met Isaac Newton at Cambridge and, while Newton was completely absorbed by his research, prevented him from dying by forcing him to eat and sleep. During the Plague, he fled to the countryside where he met members of the Royal Society and studied with them on various topics. Later he returned to Cambridge, became a Doctor and a fellow of the Royal Society. Daniel witnessed or was involeved in several political plots during this period: he was delivering mail from Huygens to Henri Oldenburg, secretary of the Royal Society for foreign correspondonance and prisoner at the Tower of London under suspicion of exchanging by means of these letters secret messages with foreign states; the Comstock family was supplying the English Navy with cannons and powder, and was discredited and ruined after cannons exploded because they were loaded with pre-packed powder that was ground too fine (the bad powder was planted by a political rival); the creation of the Bank of England, independent from the King, after the latter ruined several goldmiths by taking the gold entrusted to them by their customers. In the background, there were wars between England and the Dutch who were allied to France during the first war, but since King Charles II is suspected to be a catholic pretending to be anglican, England was allied to France in the second one.

King of the Vagabonds

1683. Jack Shaftoe is a Vagabond, occupying himself by being a footman in the army of Poland-Lithuania, going to attack the Turks who are assieging Vienna. While all the fighting is done by the cavalry, Jack saves Eliza, a yound Qwghlmian woman who is a slave in the the harem of the Grand Turk. Together they travel through Europe to Leipzig where they meet Leibniz, and eventually arrive in Amsterdam where Eliza shows great skill at investing the stock market. This sedentary life doesn't suit Jack who travels to Paris to deliver a letter from Eliza to a banker. Jack then tries to make money for himself by selling ostrich feathers and his horse, both stolen from the Turks at the siege of Vienna, but is instead taken prisoner by the Duc d'Arcachon. John Churchill, for whom Jack and his brother Bob had been couriers earlier in their life, helps him escape to prevent Jack from inadvertantly telling things about Churchill when being tortured. Jack thus escapes and accidentally discovers that d'Arcachon is the eater of rotten fish who had taken Eliza and her mother as slaves many years ago. Meanwhile, Eliza is introduced to the the court of the King William of Orange by d'Avaux, the French ambassador. With another Englishman, they plot to influence the market and make a lot of money. On his way back to Amsterdam, Jack becomes partner in a business operation, which was promised to make him rich. But when he sees Eliza again and tells her about it, she understands that the operation is a slave trade. Since Jack wants to continue with the operation because he invested all he had in it and doesn't want to depend on Eliza's money, she tells him she doesn't want to see him ever again. Jack's ship leaves Amsterdam, but Jack is made prisoner by pirates near Africa and becomes a slave himself. Eliza leaves for Versailles to become a spy for d'Avaux at the court of King Louis XIV, but on the boat she is convinced by William of Orange, an ennemy of Louis XIV, to become his spy in exchange for the title of Duchess of Qwghlm when he becomes king of England.

1685. Eliza is working as a governess for some noble at Versailles, and reporting to d'Avaux, d'Orange and Leibniz. In London, Daniel Waterhouse witnesses the death of Charles II. The next king is James II, openly a catholic. Since Eliza is handling the money of many French nobles, she becomes slowly more important at the court. She travels from time to time to Amsterdam, where she meets William of Orange and lives at Huygens's house. There she meets Bob Shaftoe who wants her to help him recover a protestant girl he fell in love with and who has been sold as a slave to an English noble, now Chief Justice of the King. In 1687, Daniel travels to Amsterdam to meet William of Orange, the so-called Defender of the Protestants, and prepare what will be later called the Glorious Revolution i.e., William of Orange becoming King of England without bloodshed. Daniel also meets Eliza during a dinner at Huygens's house. The next morning they prevent the abduction of William by French dragoons, a plot that was rumored about in various circles. Back to Versailles, Eliza is made Countess de la Zeur by the King. Daniel on the other hand is threatened by catholic nobles (including the Chief Justice) and eventually made prisoner at the Tower of London and awaiting to be assassinated (since he cannot officially be tried). But Daniel is protected by Bob Shaftoe, who happens to replace the guard at the Tower. Meanwhile, Eliza is fleeing Versailles with the help of Liselotte von der Pfalz, sister in law to Louis XIV, motivated by the fact that the king is invading her country. After being arrested by French troops in Lorraine, Eliza sleeps with the son of d'Arcachon who is leading those troops and eventually reaches Amsterdam and Hyugens's house. The story of her journey is known to Louis XIV because Eliza kept an enciphered diary which was stolen a Huygens's house and decrypted by Bonaventure Rossignol, cryptanalyst of the king. In 1688, James II flees London and William of Orange becomes the new King of England. Daniel and Bob get the Chief Justice, who also fled from London, to get lynched by a crowd for the exactions he had commited on the people many years earlier. Finally, Eliza gives birth to a son in Amsterdam. D'Arcachon believes the baby is his (and since d'Arcachon carries a genetic defect, he is eager to get his hands on a son that hasn't got this defect) and tries to steal it but fails. But in a letter to Leibniz, Eliza tells that the father is really Rossignol, whom she had met in Versailles and happened to be in Lorraine while she was there.

Oksa Pollock, 13 ans, vient juste de déménager de Paris à Londres avec ses parents. Oksa découvre qu'elle dispose de pouvoir magiques et qu'elle est l'une des descendante d'un groupe de personnes ayant fui le royaume d'Édéfia cinquante ans auparavant. Dragomira, la grand-mère d'Oksa est la descendante de la Gracieuse Malorane, dirigeante d'Édéfia au moment de la révolution. Édéfia est isolée de la Terre par une bulle de lumière, et ses habitants, les Du-Dedans, ne connaissaient rien de Du-Dehors avant que Malorane ne leur montre des images de la Terre. Les Félons, conduits par Ocious, le premier ministre de Malorane, sont attirés par les notions de pouvoir, domination… qu'ils découvrent à ce moment. Lors d'un soulèvemet, un poignée de partisans de Malorane parvient à s'enfuire avant que cette dernière ne scelle le passage. Personne ne connait la localisation d'Édéfia, il est donc impossible d'y retourner. Ces Sauve-Qui-Peut s'intègrent alors aux peuples de la Terre, jusqu'au jour où un journaliste qui s'intéressait de trop près à ces personnes étranges est assassiné. Les Sauve-Qui-Peut découvrent alors qu'Orthon, le fils d'Ocious, avait lui aussi réussi à passer. Il est maintenant le prof de maths et de sciences d'Oksa et de son ami Gus (qui est l'enfant adoptif de deux Sauve-Qui-Peuts). Orthon cherche à mettre la main sur Oksa car elle serait la clé qui lui permettrait de retrouver le chemin d'Édéfia. Oksa échappe à plusieurs tentatives d'enlèvement par Orthon (dont une qui laisse sa mère invalide). On apprend aussi qu'Orthon est le descendant d'un homme qui avait été banni pour avoir recherché l'immortalité et commis des crimes atroces dans ce but. À la fin, Orthon invite Dragomira chez lui prétendument pour parlementer. Oksa et Gus la suivent une heure plus tard, et se retrouvent face à deux Dragomira, Orthon ayant pris les traits de cette dernière. Orthon finira par mourir dans l'affrontement, tué de sang froid par Abakoum, le Veilleur de Dragomira.

Deuxième volume des aventures d'Oksa Pollock.

Gus, le meilleur ami d'Oksa, a disparu. Les Sauve-Qui-Peut découvrent qu'il est prisonnier d'un tableau qui était en possession d'Orthon. Un groupe de sauveteurs s'organise pour aller à sa recherche dans le tableau. Ce dernier est un outil de Du-Dedans destiné à punir les criminels, mais Orthon s'en est servi pour emprisonner sa s½ur jumelle, Réminiscens, dont Léomido, le frère de Dragomira, était amoureux. Les sauveteurs traverses de nombreuses épreuves mais parviennent finalement à détruire le sort au c½ur du tableau et à en sortir. Seul Léomido décide de rester, après avoir découvert qu'il était le demi-frère de Réminiscens (Malorane avait eu une liaison avec Ocious, de qui sont nés Orthon et Réminiscens, avant de se marier officiellement et d'avoir Dragomira et Léomido). Durant leur absence, des Félons sont venus enlever Marie, la mère d'Oksa, qu'ils comptent utiliser comme monnaie d'échange pour retourner à Édéfia. On apprend aussi qu'Oksa est étrangement attirée par Tugdual, un Sauve-Qui-Peut de quelques années son aîné, ce qui rend Gus très jaloux. Zoé, camarade de classe de Gus et Oksa qu'ils croyaient être du coté d'Orthon est en fait la petite fille de Léomido et Réminiscens et vit avec les Pollock depuis la mort d'Orthon. Elle a gardé des contacts avec Mortimer, le fils d'Orthon, mais refuse de le rejoindre parmi les Félons. Enfin, Orthon n'est pas mort, et a pris possession du corps de Zelda, une autre camarade de classe de Gus et Oksa, qu'ils parviennent à libérer. L'histoire se termine sur une série de catastrophes naturelles qui indiquent qu'Édéfia est en danger et que donc la Terre aussi, et poussent les Sauve-Qui-Peut a partir délivrer Marie.

The faculty of Unseen University discovers that to continue benefiting from some source of revenue, the university has to take part in a game of football at least once every twenty years. Football in Ankh-Morpork is a violent game played on the streets, but since Vetinari wants to keep it in control. The unexpected discovery of a cup containing ancient rules of football prompts Vetinari to ask the university to write the rules of a modernized football. They are helped by Mr. Nutt, a goblin working as a candle dribbler in the basement of the university who happens to be very smart. Nutt's friends are Trevor Likely, whose father was a famous football player, Glenda, who's the cook of the Night Kitchen, and her aid Juliet, woolheaded and very beautiful, who, disguised as a dwarf, appeared as a one-time model in a fashion show presenting micromail, a chain-mail as soft as cloth. While the university organises its own team, Unseen Academicals, the teams of the street football assemble their own, Ankh-Morpork United. The latter team is composed by half of hooligans. At some point of the story, Nutt's subconciously remembers he is not actually a goblin but an orc, creatures made in Uberwald by the Evil Emperor long time ago as killing machines. Nutt was under the protection of Uberwald's most powerful vampire, Lady Margolotta, who wants to make him a civilized orc who is not anymore emotionally burdened by the actions of orcs of the past. Eventually, the football game is played. The hooligans of United wound several players of Academicals, but the latter eventually win the game. In the end, Nutt agrees to go back to Uberwald to find the other orcs and teach them to be civilized.

Spirou est chasseur au Moustic Hotelen 1939, où il fait la connaissance d'une jeune fille récemment engagée comme soubrette de qui il tombe amoureux. Spirou rencontre aussi un journaliste à sensation, Fantasio, qui veut en faire son informateur, à propos du séjour à l'hôtel d'un boxeur célèbre accompagné d'une actrice célèbre. Mais à l'hôtel résident aussi trois mystérieux personages : un nazi, et deux polonais, qui discutent du statut de la Pologne et de la Prusse. En pourchassant Spip, Spirou déboule dans le salon où discutent les trois hommes, et leur propose une solution pour conserver à la Pologne son accès à la mer à Dantzig et éviter la guerre. Malheureusement, le nazi qui voulait consulter son gourvernement avant de donner son accord sur cette solution se fait insulter dans le couloir par Fantasio, et la guerre éclate peu après. La copine de Spirou, dont il ne connaissait même pas le nom, disparaît, et un agent des services secrets belges lui apprend qu'elle était une informatrice du NKVD et qu'elle a été rapatriée en Union Soviétique.

À bord du gigantesque paquebot Mékaton, c'est la fête en continu. Mais Bruno, petit garçon, s'ennuie, il ne veut pas se forcer à être joyeux tous les jours. Un soir, apparaît Philéon, un homme-rhinocéros, poursuivi par les forces spéciales. Bruno et sa mère Edmée cachent le fugitif qui leur explique qu'il veut aller voir ce qu'il y a au dehors du Mékaton (tout le monde étant persuadé qu'il n'y a rien). Avec l'aide du capitaine, dépossédé de son commandement par le chef des forces spéciales, et accompagnés d'une fillette muette, passager clandestin, ils s'échappent sur une chaloupe et arrivent sur les glaces du pôle nord. Là ils découvrent l'existence de gens vivant heureux malgré les conditions difficiles, et les robots qui enlèvent tous les humains qu'ils trouvent. La fillette est enlevée elle aussi, et Bruno part à sa recherche. Ils arrivent dans une ville immense, principalement peuplée de robots. Bruno fait la connaissance d'un savant, homme aux jambes mécaniques, qui lui raconte l'histoire de la ville : les hommes avaient fabriqué des robots, puis après une guerre terrible, seuls les robots ont survécu. Leur but étant de servir les hommes, ils partent à la recherche des humains « égarés » et les ramènent en ville. Bruno finit par retrouver la petite fille, ainsi que sa mère et Philéon qui étaient partis à leur recherche avec des passagers du Mékaton, ces derniers ayant renversé le chef des forces spéciales et demandé le retour du capitaine. Le savant explique alors que lorsque tous les hommes ont été exterminés, les robots ont recréé une race humaine in vitro. Mais certains de ces humains n'ont pas supporté la vie mécanisée et sans surprise de la ville, et se sont enfuis sur des paquebots tels que le Mékaton. Certains individus mi-homme, mi-animal tel Philéon, sont le produit des expériences du savant.

Ernest, un pithecanthrope, raconte comment son père Édouard force l'évolution de l'espèce pré-humaine. Ernest raconte comment ses semblabes étaient déjà devenus des chasseurs en inventant des lances. Édouard domestique ensuite le feu en rapportant un tison allumé par un volcan. Le feu leur permet de repousser les prédateurs et vivre plus tranquillement. Cette révolution n'est pas du goût de l'oncle Vania qui ne cesse de répeter qu'il faut laisser faire la nature au lieu de forcer l'évolution, ce à quoi Édouard réplique que l'évolution naturelle a conduit certains carnassier à une hyper-spécialisation et à un cul-de-sac évolutif. Édouard découvre ensuite la pointe durcie au feu, qui permet de chasser des anumaux plus grands et un de ses fils invente l'art figuratif, qui fait grand peur aux autres. Revient alors de voyage l'oncle Ian, qui raconte ce qui se passe ailleurs dans le monde, et évoque entre autres les hommes de Néanderthal habitant l'Europe. Aucun n'a l'air d'avoir autant évolué que nos pithécanthropes. Édouard force ensuite ses fils à quitter la horde et à prendre femme dans une autre horde, inventant ainsi l'exogamie et un meilleur brassage génétique. Lorsque les quatre fils reviennent, la mère d'Ernest a inventé la cuisson de la viande, qui permet de passer bien moins de temps à mastiquer et donc donne du temps libre pour inventer de nouvelles choses, temps qu'Ernest passe à supposer que lorsqu'on meurt, on part au pays des rêves et on est toujours heureux. Grâce à une pierre rouge rapportée par un demi-frère d'Ernest, Édouard parvient à faire du feu à partir d'étincelles (et brûle au passage une immense forêt). Édouard voudrait partager le feu avec le reste du monde, mais les autres de la horde refusent d'abandonner cet avantage sur les autres. Forcés de monter vers le nord, ils arrivent sur le territoire d'une autre horde qui ne voit pas leur invasion d'un bon ½il. Édouard se charge des négotiations, et sans consulter les autres, offre le feu en échange d'une partie du territoire de chasse et d'habitations dans des grottes de calcaire. Les autres ne veulent plus de la tyrannie, tout bienveillante soit-elle, d'Édouard, et lorsque ce dernier invente l'arc et la flèche, ils organisent un «  accident  » et le mangent en guise de rite funéraire.

Tynette et Gnondpom s'échappent de leur oubliette pour tomber dans un piège. Haïgwépa, qui était à la recherche des enfants est frappé d'amnésie, mais recrute un barbare rencontré par hasard, qui le ramèene au village. Teutram et Waha partent alors à la recherche des deux enfants qui ont été vendus à des tisserand qui tuent leurs esclaves à la tâche. Le barbare et Waha sont aiguillés vers l'orphelinat, où ils sont faits prisonniers et provoquent une révolte des enfants. Une fois libérés, ils vont chez les tisserands et détruisent tout. Dans la bagarre, Lady Romande est transformée en trolle par le pouvoir aléatoire de Waha, et devient la copine du barbare.

December 2009. Murdoch Ross and his friend Lee travel from California to Scotland to visit Murdoch's grandfather Charles Ross, a physicist. He reveals that he had been working on a device that allows to send messages back and forth in time up to 24 hours. They quickly discover that a message sent to the past telling someone to do something doesn't have to be obeyed, and if such, the future history will simply change and the previous future will never happen. While out for a beer, Murdoch meets Anne, a doctor working at the nearby fusion energy research facility, and they eventually start dating. At some point, Murdoch postpones a date with Anne because of a software bug that was nagging him. He soon decides that it was a mistake to let her down, sends a message to himself about the solution of the bug, and changes History slightly. Some months later, all over the world, people are being victims of injuries provoked by millions of micro-blackholes orbiting Earth. Murdoch and his team quickly discover that they are caused by the fusion research experiment that had taken place a couple of days earlier; current theories do not take into account the energy sent back in time, which causes the blackholes to be formed. Some amount of calculations later, they learn that the blackholes are not going to evaporate, but grow and eventually absorb Earth. Moreover, a strange disease appears among some employees of the research facility, and affects Lee as well. Murdoch and Anne decide to send themselves a message five months back in time (by 1 day hops, using the time machine as a relay) to prevent the experiment from happening. History changes again, and because of low-probability fluctuations, in this new timeline, Murdoch and Anne never date. The experiment is canceled, and Charles Ross now has to unveil his research to allow his theories to be taken into account in the fusion experiments. Although no blackholes are created, people however continue to get sick from this mysterious viral disease which affects people who had been in California some months earlier; the virus seems to have an incubation period of several months. After some amount of investigation, they discover that it is caused by a virus resulting from experiments conducted in secret in a satellite which had crashed on Earth at that time. The US and British authorities, who had been working jointly on this project already have a vaccine and start to inoculates the population. But one batch is defective and kills hundreds of people, stopping the vaccination campaign. Charles and Murdoch decide to use the time-machine to warn one official about the defective batch, thus convincing him that it can be used for preventing the disease from spreading. With the agreement of officials from all over the world, now convinced that it can be done, they send to themselves in the past the list of the persons who first got sick in order to vaccinate them all and prevent the outbreak. In this new timeline, meets Anne again.

Aunt Dahlia is trying to convince the famous novelist Cornelia Fothergill to publish her latest novell as a serial in Dahlias's paper, Milay's Boudoir, but the writer doesn't want to sell it as cheap as Dahlia can afford. Dahlia then learns that Cornelia's husband, the famous painter Everard Fothergill, is sick to see every day in the dining-room a terrible painting made by his father Edward Fothergill, who gave it to his son as a wedding present. Dahlia thus asks Bertie to steal the painting, which would make Cornelia happy that her husband is not depressed anymore by the sight of the the painting and would then sell the novel at the price Dahlia offers; since there has been a series of burglaries in the neighbourhood, nobody would suspect a thing. Bertie eventually steals and destroys the painting, but when only one bit is left bearing the painter's signature, Jeeves notices that Bertie stole the wrong painting, a somewhat similar piece by Everard, which happens to be the artist's favourite. On their way to the dining-room to verify which painting Bertie has taken, they meet Edward Fothergill carrying the terrible painting. He explains that he loves it so much that he should never have given it to his son, and has faked a burglary to recover it. Jeeves then suggest that Bertie could pretend to have tried – and failed – to prevent the burglars to perpretate their crime, and Dahlia knocks him out for verisimilitude.

Une soucoupe volante atterit dans l'Iowa, mais lorsque le Patron, Sam et Mary, des agents secrets, arrivent sur les lieux, elle a déjà été remplacée par une fausse, faisant croire à un canular. Mais peu après, sur le corps d'un homme qui venait de les attaquer, ils découvrent une créature morte collée entre ses omoplates. Ils parviennent rapidement à la conclusion que ces êtres sont sortis de la soucoupe et ont commencé à envahir la région en parasaitant ses habitants. Un des parasites a même réussi à s'infilter au sein même de la Section et parvient à contrôler Sam. Ce dernier participe, impuissant, aux man½uvres des parasites pour augmenter le nombre de porteurs. Le Patron parvient cependant à récuperer Sam et à capturer son parasite. Ils parviennent à en extraire un certain nombre d'informations. Après de difficiles discussion, le Patron parvient à convaincre le Présidet et le Congrès que la menace d'invasion est réelle, mais la lenteur de réaction des politique et leur refus de croire à l'invasion permet rapidement aux parasites d'occuper tout le centre des États-Unis. L'opération militaire qui en suivit ne permis que de renforcer les rangs des parasites grâce aux corps des soldats parachutés dans la zone occupée, les dirigants ayant largement sous-estimé le nombre de personnes infectées. En permission tous les deux, Sam et Mary se marient et vont passer leur lune de miel dans la montagne, loin de tout. Lorsque Mary se fait infecter à son tour, Sam parvient à la sauver, et ils décident de reprendre tout de suite du service. Lorsqu'une autre soucoupe atterit dans le Mississippi, les militaires parviennent à s'en emparer, et le Patron amène Mary et Sam la visiter. Sam se rend compte que l'endroit éveille des souvenirs chez Mary (dont il ne connait rien du passé). La jeune femme est née dans une colonie religieuse sur Vénus qui avait été attaquée par les parasites (venus de Titan, lune de Saturne). La plupart des colons sont morts et leurs parasites aussi, mais Mary, encore une enfant à l'époque, avait survécu à la maladie qui a balayé tant les porteurs que les parasites. Elle avait par la suite été recueillie par des terriens, mais avait tout oublié de son passé. Sam trouve alors la solution au problème: la maladie en question se transmet de parasite en parasite lorsqu'ils communiquent par contact direct et tue les parasites plus rapidement que les humains. Des parasites infectés, portés par des animaux, sont alors lachés dans la zone occupée, puis quelques jours plus tard des parachutistes humain sont lachés pour injecter à tous le serum nécessaire pour les guerir. Le livre, présenté comme un rapport, se termine par un mot de Sam, en partance pour Titan avec Mary et des milliers d'autres agents dans le but d'exterminer les parasites.

Bertie learns that his now friend Roderick Glossop is depressed because his fiancee refuses to get married before Roderick's daughter Honoria is married. Aunt Dahlia happens to be working with Blair Eggleston, a young author who produces a serial for her paper, Milady's Boudoir. The author has told Dahlia that he is madly in love with Honoria but is too shy to propose. Bertie then decides to court Honoria to make Eggleston jealous and force him to propose to Honoria. Bertie goes however a bit too far since, after kissing Honoria in front of Eggleston, he learns they had been engaged since the previous evening and that this move made him break the engagement. Honoria of course considers herself to then be engaged to Bertie. To force her to break their engagement, Bertie, on Jeeve's advice, hires an acrtress, Trixie, to pretend to be engaged to him in front of Honoria, but this scheme has been unnecessary since Honoria and Eggleston are already reconciled. The agent of the actress howerver blackmails Bertie to marry Trixie or get sued for breach of promise. On the day the blackmailer comes to Bertie's place to collect his money, Jeeves and Dahlia manage to convince him that Bertie is actually living far beyond his means, has not actually any money to pay him, and would be sent by Dahlia to Canada with a very small allowance.

Aunt Agatha sends Bertie to New York to prevent his cousin Gussie Mannering-Phipps to marry a vaudelville actress by the name of Ray Denison. When Bertie meets Gussie, he discovers that Gussie is playing on the vaudeville stage as well, Ray's father, a famous vaudeville actor himself, refusing that his daughter marries outside of the profession. Reaching a dead-end, Bertie ask Aunt Julia, Gussie's mother, to come to New York and reason with her son. But the mother used to be herself a vaudeville actress, and was turned into a respectable lady by Aunt Agatha and by force after getting married. When Aunt Julia meets Ray's father, she recognizes him as an old accointance from when she was on the stage. The man reveals that he had always been in love with her and since their are both widow(er)s, he asks her back to come back the stage and to marry him.

Bertie's physician suggested him to go and rest in the countryside. Bertie decides to rent a cottage at Maidens Eggesford, where his Aunt Dahlia is staying with friends of hers, the Briscoes. Colonel Briscoe breeds horses, and his horse's only serious competitor is Mr. Cook's horse, his arch-rival. On his first day at the village, Bertie accidentally meets Cook, who, learning that Bertie knows Briscoe, is convinced he has come to sabotage the training of his horse by pinching the cat. The cat appeared one day and since then, Cook's horse refuses to train if she is not around. Moreover, Major Plank is staying at Cook's place and, although an attack of malaria prevents him from remembering in what circumstances he had previously met Bertie, there is a risk in the future that he would remember that he is convinced Bertie is a thief. When Aunt Dahlia, who had bet a very large sum of money on Briscoe's horse, learns about the cat, she asks Briscoe's niece to help her pinch the cat. Thanks to a local poacher of her accointance, the cat is stolen and delivered to Bertie. Bertie then pays the poacher to take it back, but the cat follows him back to Bertie's place and refuses to leave. At the same time, Cook's daughter Vanessa, whom Bertie had met once at a party a year ago, quarrels with her fiance Orlo, the son of Cook's former business partner, who has entrusted the control of Orlo's inheritance to Cook. The reason of the quarrel is that she finds Orlo didn't ask her father hard enough for the release oh his money. Orlo needs the money to be able to marry Vanessa, but her father refuses her to marry the communist he is. Vanessa therefore announces Bertie they are now engaged, and that she will make him loose all his bad habits (smoking, drinking cocktails, going do the Drones' club and reading light books). Orlo is of course furious and threatens Bertie, but since the former, an insurance salesman by trade, managed to sell Bertie a life insurance, killing him would be bad business. Bertie manages to convince Orlo that Vanessa actually still loves him, and encourages him to ask again for his money. When Jeeves comes back from visiting his aunt at a nearby place, he tells Bertie that the cat is actually his aunt's, and they use the animal to force Cook into releasing Orlo's money and dropping the charges agains Bertie for cat-theft (Plank having meanwhile remembered his first meeting with Bertie). Briscoe's horse eventually wins the race and everything ends well.

Bertie's friend Harold ‘Ginger’ Winship is, under the pressure of his fiancee Florence Cray, running for Parliament in Market Snodsbury. Aunt Dahlia asks Bertie to come to Brinkley Court and canvass for him. The first person Bertie meets is Mrs. McCorkadale, Ginger's opponent; the meeting is disastrous, which convinces Bertie to give up. Mrs. McCorkadale is however fair-play enough to go and see Aunt Dahlia to warn her that a man called Bingley (a former valet, who had been at Bertie's service in a previous episode) wanted to sell her dirty information about Ginger which Bingley got from the book of the Junior Ganymede Club a club of valets and butlers who keep records of juicy information about their employers. Bingley had stolen the book and while Bertie's attempt at recovering failed, Jeeves' succeeded. Moreover, Dahlia had invited Roderick Spode, Lord Sidcup to keep speeches in favour of Ginger. Finally, Dahlia had also invited a businessman called Runkle from whom she hopes to extract money; the man was Tuppy Glossop's father's employer and made a fortune from an invention by Tuppy's father, but never paid him back anything. Since Tuppy and Dahlia's daughter Angela are engaged, Tuppy needs money to get married, and Dahlia wants to get the money for him. Ginger's problem is mainly that he had fallen in love with the secretary he had engaged to help him in his campain, and needs Florence to break the engagement. Meanwhile, Spode taking a liking on running for parliament, he decides to give up his title to be allowed to run for it. Madeline, his fiancee who dreamt of becoming Lady Sidcup then breaks the engagement and turned once again to Bertie. Finally, Dahlia being unsuccessful at softening Runkle up wants to blackmail him by stealing a piece of silver he wanted to sell to Dahlia's husband Tom (who had fled the house since he hates guests). When Bertie is trying to put the silver back in Runkle's room, he is caught and accused of theft. Eventually, advises by Jeeves, Ginger decides to make a speech where he encourages his supporters to vote for Mrs. McCorkadale. This prompts Florence to break her engagement to him. Since Spode got a black eye from a thrown potato during Ginger's speech, he decided to give up becoming a member of the Parliament, which makes Madelin restore their engagement. Florence then proposes to Bertie, but Runkle tells her that Bertie is a thief, and she takes her proposal back. Finally, thanks to the information found in the Junior Ganymede Club's book (Bingley having been in Runkle's service), Dahlia manages to blackmail Runkle and extort him to money she wanted.

Bertie's friend Pinker tells him that his fiancee Stiffy Bing wants him to go to Totleigh Towers to do something for her. Knowing Stiffy, Bertie refuses at first, but when he learns that Gussie is angry at his fiancee Madeline because she put him on a vegetarian diet, and that if they break up, Madeline will turn to Bertie, the latter decides to go to Totleigh Towers and try to patch their relationship. Sir Watkin Basset, Madeline's father and Siffy's uncle, is a collector, and he recently acquired for a very low price a very valuable statuette. Stiffy wants Bertie to return the statuette to the seller, an explorer named Planck, because she believed Sir Watking cheated him. But Sir Watkin only pretended to have paid a low price, to make Bertie's uncle Tom Travers, another competing collector, jealous. Thanks to Jeeves, the statuette is returned to Sir Watkin's collection room, and Bertie escapes the wrath of Roderick Spode, now Lord Sidcup, who is persuated that Bertie has come to the house to steal the statuette. Later, Gussie flees the house with the cook and Sir Watkin is happy to learn that his daughter will not marry Gussie after all. He's so happy that he even promises a vicarage to Pinker, who was waiting for it to get married to Stiffy. But when he learns that Madeline got engaged to Bertie (because she believes he is in love with her), he takes his word back. Thanks to Jeeves, Pinker gets a vicarage at the neighbouring village from Planck, who was at the same time looking for a new vicar and a player for his rugby team. Stiffy then gives him the statuette, which she had again pinched from the collection to blackmail her uncle to honor his word. Bertie passes it to Jeeves. Meanwhile, Lord Sidcup tries to convince Madeline, with whom he had been in love for a very long time, to marry him instead to Bertie. She makes her mind to do so when Jeeves tells her that Bertie is a kleptomaniac and that he just found the statuette hidden in Bertie's sock drawer. Bertie is then arrested and put in prison, but Jeeves manages to get him out by promising to enter Sir Watkin's service (which he plans to quit after a week to return to Bertie's service) against him dropping the charges against Bertie.

Bertie learns in the Times that he is engaged to Bobbie Wickham. Soon after, he is asked by Aunt Dahlia to come to Brinkley Court. Her goddaughter, Phillis Mills is already staying there and her stepfather, Aubrey Upjohn, Bertie's former schoolmaster, accompanied her; he is to deliver a speech at Market Snodsbury's grammar school in a few days. Moreover, Dahlia's husband Tom is negotiating with an american named Mr. Cream, who came to Brinkley Court with her wife, a mystery writer, and her son Willie. The latter has a reputation of a playboy, and Dahlia doesn't want him to get engaged to Phillis who is a bit of a slow thinker, and likely to fall for him. At Brinkley Court, Bobbie tells Bertie that the announcement was a plot to make her mother feel relieved when she tells her she is actually engaged to Reginald ‘Kipper’ Herring, a friend of Bertie's who is a columnist at a paper and recently wrote an acerbic critic of Upjohn's book on English grammar schools (of which Bertie and Kipper have terrible memories). Moreover, Bertie discovers that Roderick Glossop, the loony-doctor, is posing as the butler; he has actually been asked by Aunt Dahlia to evaluate the sanity of Willie Cream. Since Dahlia is temporarily away from the house, Bertie, as the acting host cannot tail Willie all the time to prevent him from proposing to Phillis, so he invites Kipper and asks him to replace him. Bertie then learns from Jeeves (who is currently on vacation) over the phone that Willie Cream is also a kleptomaniac, and soon discovers that Tom's silver cow creamer has disappeared from the collection. After Bertie fails twice at searching Willie's room, Glossop manages to recover the object. Meanwhile, Upjohn has seen the critic on his book and wants to sue the paper, meaning that Kipper would loose his position there and be barred from getting a new one. Soon after, one learns that Phillis got engaged to Willie and after a heated discussion with Upjohn, Dahlia (who came back) discovers that the Cream have two boys, Wilfred and Wilbur, and that the playboy is the other one; exasperated by Upjohn's smug attitude, she asks him to leave the house. Jeeves, who had come back on Bertie's call for help, packs his belongings and pinches the text of his speech. Since Upjohn is unable to deliver a speech without his notes and that the speech is impotant since it would start his political carreer, Bobbie blackmails him to drop the lawsuit for the return of the speech. Some time earlier, Mrs Cream had discover the silver cow creamer hidden among Glossop's belongings (who doesn't know that Tom actually sold it to Willie) and called the police. Since to defend himself Glossop would have to reveal that he was called to spy on Willie and thought the latter had stolen it, thus jeopardizing Tom's negotiations, Jeeves suggest to tell that Bertie is the kleptomaniac.

Aunt Dahlia wants Bertie to come and keep her company at Brinkley Court, where she had invited Mr and Mrs Trotter and Mrs Trotter's son Percy Gorringe, a poet. Florence Craye and her very jealous fiance G. D'arcy “Stilton” Cheesewright are staying there too. Aunt Dahlia plans to sell her magazine, Milday's Boudoir to Mr Trotter, and she has hired the very famouse writer Daphne Dolores Morehead to make the magazine look more valuable. But since her husband Tom won't to pay for it, she has pawned her pearl necklace. At some point, Florence breaks up with Stilton and gets engaged to Bertie. Moreover, Percy, who plans to adapt Florence's novel Spindrift as a play, is madly in love with her. When Tom announces he has invited Roderick Spode, now known as Lord Sidcup and an expert in jewellery, she asks Bertie to steal the necklace before Sidcup can identify it as a copy. Bertie fails, and as a consequence the necklace ends up in the safe. When the safe remains open by accident, Dahlia takes her necklace, and a bit later Bertie, seeing the safe open, steals the second necklace, belonging to Mrs Trotter, believing it is his aunts. Dahlia's problem is that Mr Trotter is completely under the control of his wife, and she wants Anatole, Dahlia's French cook. When Mrs Trotter discovers her necklace has been stolen, she threatens to call the police. Jeeves then returns the necklace he claims to have found somewhere, and reveals it's a copy. Mrs Trotter admits she pawned it because Percy needed money for the play. Mr Trotter gets angry and from there on takes control of his marriage. When Florence learns what Percy has done for her, she suddenly fells in love with him. Dahlia eventually manages to sell her magazine to Mr Trotter.

Lorsque Cyrano et Eusèbe arrivent accompagnés de sauvages, Armand parvient à convaincre le peuple de la Lune de se rebeller et libère le roi.

Cinquième volume du donjon de Naheulbeuk, publié en 2008. Les aventuriers s'échappent du chemin de l'oubli et rencontrent des elfes qui leur font des cadeaux précieux mais inutiles. Pendant ce temps, Zangdar s'apprête à prendre l'air à bord de son dirigeable. Peu après, la companie rencontre une magicienne qui leur vend une couronne de téléportation en échange d'objets elfiques. La téléportation se passe presque bien, mais ils se retrouvent dans les caves du chateau de Gzor, pleines de monstres.

Puis ils repartent à travers la forêt de Schlipak où ils rencontrent un paladin d'un dieu du sommeil, sont faits prisonniers par les hommes poireaux avant de s'échapper et se perdre sur le chemin de l'oubli…

Sixième volume des Annales du Disque-Monde (traduction de Patrick Couton), Trois s½urcières a été publié en 1988 par Terry Pratchett.

Le duc Kasqueth, manipulé par sa femme, assassine Vérence le roi de Lancre pour prendre sa place. Vérence se retrouve à l'état de fantôme, condamné à hanter son chateau. Au même moment trois sorcières, Mémé Ciredutemps, Nounou Ogg et Magrat Goussedail, sauvent la vie du fils du roi et le placent sous la garde d'une troupe d'acteurs ambulants qui passaient justement à Lancre. Comme le temps passe, le duc se montre un roi bien pire que tous ceux qui avaient gouverné Lancre par le passé, et est rongé par le remords d'avoir assassiné Vérence, remords d'autant plus persistant que la rumeur le tient pour responsable (la version officielle étant évidemment qu'il n'y est pour rien). Lorsque le roi décide d'arrêter Nounou Ogg parce qu'il les tient responsable de la propagation de la rumeur, les sorcières, après avoir fait évader Nounou, décident qu'il est temps de trouver un vrai roi pour Lancre. Mais le descendant officiel n'a encore que trois ans, ce qui pose un problème. Mémé décide alors de transporter tout le royaume quinze années dans le futur (il aurait été plus simple de transporter seulement le chateau et ses habitatns, mais cela aurait signifié que les habitants du royaume auraient dû endurer le duc pendant quinze ans). Quinze ans plus tard, le dauphin connu sous le nom de Tomjan est devenue un acteur de théatre exceptionnel. Conseillé par son fou, le duc fait chercher une troupe de théatre à Ankh-Morpork dans le but de jouer une pièce de théatre mettant en scène le bon duc et le mauvais roi, dans le but de manipuler les sujets de telle sorte qu'ils ne souviennent que de la pièce et non de la rumeur. Tomjan arrive donc à Lancre avec sa troupe, mais la pièce tourne au vinaigre lorsque les trois sorcières entrent sur scène et font éclater la vérité. Le duc tombe d'une tour dans sa fuite et meurt, tandis que la duchesse est arrêtée et enfermée. Tout irait pour le mieux si Tomjan voulait effectivement être roi, ce qui n'est pas le cas. Coup de théatre, on dévoile que le fou est en fait le frère aîné de Tomjan (bien qu'illégitime, mais on ne le répètera à personne). Le fou devient alors roi de Lancre, et tout est bien qui finit bien.

Les huitièmes fils de huitièmes fils deviennent mages. Les mages ne sont pas autorisés à se marier et surtout pas à avoir des enfants. La raison en est que le huitième fils d'un mage est un sourcelier, une source de magie. La dernière fois qu'un sourcelier est apparu sur le Disque, deux mille ans auparavant, il a déclenché les guerres thaumaturgiques qui ont failli détruire le Disque (et qui ont eu pour conséquence l'apparition du vin rétro-annuel et du poirier savant, entre autres). Au début de l'histoire, un mage expulsé de l'Université Invisible pour cause d'instabilité mentale a décidé de se marier, et a eu un huitième fils. Son père, qui avait échappé à la Mort plusieurs fois se réfugie dans son bourdon et utilise ce dernier pour régenter la vie de son fils, afin de prendre sa revanche sur les mages de l'U.I. Le sourcelier, encore enfant, arrive donc un jour à l'U.I. et en prend le contrôle, avec pour but de dominer le monde. Pour ce faire, il a besoin de devenir archichancellier, et donc de coiffer le chapeau de l'archichancellier, chapeau ayant son esprit propre. Voyant venir le danger, le chapeau attire Conina (fille de Cohen le Barbare) et se fait voler. Dans sa fuite, Conina rencontre Rincevent qui se fait enrôler par le chapeau. Tous deux partent par bateau le plus loin possible de'Ankh-Morpork. Ils se font attaquer par des pirates klatchiens que Conina parvient à repousser quasiment à elle-seule, mais sont finalement fait prisonniers du sérif d'Al Khali, Créosote (fils du célèbre Créosote de « riche comme Créosote »). Conina se retrouve dans le harem, et Rincevent dans la fosse au serpent où il rencontre Nijel le Destructeur, héros barbare débutant. Ils parviennent à s'échapper et à retrouver Conina, mais le chapeau a déjà été coiffé par le grand vizir qui se retrouve sous le contrôle de ce dernier. S'en suit une nouvelle guerre thaumaturgique entre le vizir et le sourcellier ; ce dernier a d'ailleurs enfermé les Dieux du Disque dans une petite perle, provoquant l'apparition des géants de glace, provoquant le début de l'Apocralypse. Rincevent, Conina, Créosote et Nijel parviennent à quitter Al Khali en tapis volant, et Ricevent utilise le tapis pour retourner à Ankh-Morpork. Il retrouve le bibliothécaire qui s'est réfugié dans la tour de l'Art avec les livres qu'il a réussi à sauver avant que le sourcellier n'ordonne qu'on brûle la bibliothèque. Le bibliothécaire convainc Rincevent d'affronter le sourcelier, et ces derniers se retrouvent dans les dimensions de la Basse-Fosse après la destruction du bourdon du sourcelier par le grand vizir. Rincevent aide le sourcelier à regagner la réalité et à libérer les dieux, mais le mage reste prisonnier, en compagnie du Bagage qui l'a finalement retrouvé et qui a sauté dans la faille entre les deux mondes un instant avant qu'elle ne se referme. Le sourcelier répare tous les dégats qu'il a causé, puis disparait dans un monde qu'il s'est crée, comme l'ont fait tous les sourceliers avant lui.

Septième volume des Annales du Disque-Monde (traduction de Patrick Couton), Pyramides a été publié en 1989 par Terry Pratchett.

Teppic est le fils du roi (avec statut divin) Teppicymon XXVII du Jolhimôme, un minuscule royaume fluvial écrasé entre ses imposants voisins Éphèbe et Tsortq pour lesquels il sert de zone neutre. Teppic vient d'obtenir son diplôme de la guilde des assassins d'Ankh-Morpork, mais la mort soudaine de son père le ramène sur la terre de ses ancètres. Il est censé être le roi, mais le grand prêtre Dios est le vrai chef du pays, interprétant à sa convenance les ordres du jeune roi/dieu. Dios est tellement ancré dans la tradition millénaire du royaume qu'il ne peut même pas concevoir de faire les choses différement de ses habitudes, et pousse donc Teppic à faire construire une pyramide pour y faire reposer la dépouille de son père, malgré l'aversion affichée de ce dernier pour les pyramides. On découvre au fil du récit que les pyramides sont des accumulateurs de temps qui maintiennent le Vieux Royaume solidement ancré dans le passé, rendant tout changement impossible. Mais la nouvelle grande pyramide est trop grande et devient déjà avant son achèvement une anomalie dans le continuum espace-temps qui conduira, faute d'avoir été coiffée à temps de son sommet métallique qui lui aurait permis de libérer le temps emagasiné une fois par jour, à la disparition du royaume (qui a échangé sa dimension temporelle avec une de ses dimensions spatiales et devient donc parfaitement plat et invisible) juste après que Teppic se soit enfuit sur le dos d'un chameau (nommé Sale-Bête, qui est au passage le plus grand mathématicien du Disque). Teppic se rend donc à Éphèbe à la recherche de mathématiciens et de savants dans l'espoir de trouver un moyen de faire réapparaître le Vieux Royaume, mais ces derniers sont incapables d'aider Teppic (et d'ailleurs, ça ne les intéresse pas). En même temps, la zone neutre ayant disparu, poussés par la force de l'Histoire, Tsort et Éphèbe se préparent à la guerre. Une nuit, Teppic rêve de Kaloteh, le fondateur du Jolhimôme, qui lui indique que c'est grâce à un chameau assoiffé qu'il a découvert le Jolh, sept mille ans plus tôt. Teppic enfourche donc Sale-Bête et retourner vers la frontière du Vieux Royaume. Sale-Bête, assoiffé, finit par franchir la distortion spatio-temporelle pour aller s'abreuver dans le Jolh. En mÊme temps, les momies des anciens rois et reine reposant dans les pyramides se sont réveillées et marchent vers le palais pour aller combattre les dieux qui sont eux aussi devenus réels et sèment la terreur. Teppic rejoint la grande pyramide et, se faisant expliquer le problème par le fils de Ptaclusp l'architecte, entreprend de gravir le monument pour le coiffer d'un de ses couteaux d'assassin (le sommet original ayant été détruit précedemment dans une tentative ratée de coiffage). Tout fini bien, le royaume reprend sa place sur le Disque, les momies et les dieux disparaissent, et Teppic peut enfin régner et moderniser son royaume. On apprend aussi que Dios était en fait le même grand prêtre qui avait servi Kaloteh, et qui venait rajeunir régulièrement dans sa pyramide. Comme le moment ne semblait jamais opportun pour laisser sa place à un autre, il a continué à diriger le royaume pendant sept mille ans.

Morty est un jeune homme maladroit dont le père essaye de faire un homme. À la foire aux apprentis, il est choisi par un maître inattendu, la Mort lui-même. La Mort emmène Morty dans son domaine (une maison entièrement noire située dans un paysage entièrement noir à la lisière de la réalité). Morty y rencontre Albert, le serviteur de la Mort et la fille adoptive de la Mort, Ysabell. Après un certain temps passé à nettoyer l'écurie, Morty accompagne la Mort dans sa tournée au cours de laquelle son regard est attiré par la princesse Keli, fille d'un roi qui vient de mourir assassiné. Plus tard, la Mort, envoie Morty pour sa première mission en solitaire, dont il s'acquitte correctement sauf pour la dernière partie, qui concerne la princesse Keli sur le point de se faire assassiner. Morty ne peut pas se résigner à remplir son office, ce qui provoque un paradoxe : tous les serviteurs du chateau voient la princesse circuler dans les couloirs, mais savent inconsciemment que la princesse est morte, car c'était pré-écrit dans l'Histoire. Pendant ce temps, la Mort goûte aux joies de la vie, prend part à une fête organisée par le Patricien, se saoûle dans le tambour crevé, et finit par obtenir un travail comme cuistot dans l'Antre à côtes de Harga, tandis que Morty commence à ressembler de plus en plus à la Mort. Morty remarque que l'Histoire est en train de reprendre le dessus et que la réalité se rapproche doucement mais sûrement du chateau de la princesse, effaçant sur son passage les incohérences provoquées par Morty. Morty veut la sauver, et ne trouve d'autre solution que de l'emmener avec lui dans le domaine de la Mort, juste avant que la réalité ne l'efface de l'Histoire. La Mort attend Morty de pied ferme, très mécontent de son apprenti. Morty défie la Mort en duel, mais au moment où la Mort allait le tuer, ce dernier décide de montrer de la compassion et demande aux dieux de changer l'Histoire. Morty finit par épouser Ysabell.
