Un des premiers romans de Roland C. Wagner, à en juger par la date, Les derniers jours de mai semble être un précurseur des Futurs mystères de Paris.

L'intrigue met en scène Killer, alias Tueur, alias Théo, un junkie qui vient juste de rentrer à Paris après sept ans d'absence. Le pays est couvert d'une couche de brume rouge, appelée la couche de Bolgenstein et la police a peu à peu cédé la place aux milices. Killer est un mutant, le seul à cumuler plusieurs pouvoirs, et responsable de la mort de cinquante-mille personnes sept ans auparavant. Manquant de peu d'être lynché, il est sauvé de justesse par Gus, son seul ami. Ils s'enfuient par des souterrains de Paris, infestés de rats et d'animaux issus de manipulations génétiques. Ils sauvent en chemin Millénaire, un vieillard agé de treize ans qui est le produit de manipulations génétiques ratées qui avaient pour but de créer une race de surhommes. Il leur apprend que les Autorités ont l'intention de quitter la Terre à bord d'un vaisseau spatial qui les attends en orbite. Ils sont ensuite séparés, et Killer est attiré par un message télépathique. Il retrouve alors Nadja, la s½ur de Gus qui avait disparu depuis des années. Nadja lui révèle qu'elle aussi est une mutante et que c'est elle qui avait forcé Killer a laisser ses pouvoirs se développer, menant au massacre qui le hante depuis lors. Combinant leurs pouvoirs, Killer et Nadja se projettent dans l'espace à la recherche du vaisseau, qui se révèle être un être vivant, désigné sous le nom de l'Orque, et dont le métabolisme est fondé sur les éléments transuraniens et qui a un grand besoin de præsidium, un élément qui n'existe pas à l'état naturel mais qu'on trouve sous forme de traces dans les déchets de centrales nucléaires. En même temps, un inspecteur de police mène l'enquête sur le retour de Killer et se rend compte qu'il n'existe aucune trace écrite du massacre perpétré par Killer sept ans plus tôt. Tout le monde s'en souvient, mais aucune archive écrite ou informatisée ne le mentionne avant son retour, quelques jours auparavant. De plus, l'apparition de Killer a mis le feu aux poudres entre les milices et les citoyens et une guerre civile pointe son nez ; la rumeur parle d'une tentative de prise de pouvoir par les milices. Le lendemain de leur visite à l'Orque, Nadja et Killer sortent rejoindre Gus qui a été signalé dans un autre quartier de Paris, et Nadja se fait tuer par deux drogués à qui on a promis un kilo de Dragon Rouge en échange de ce service. Dragon Rouge est une poudre rouge qui a mis en échec toute tentave d'analyse et qui est encore plus destructrice que les autres. Gus finit par retrouver Killer, et ils partent tous deux donner à Nadja une sépulture digne de ce nom, dans un glacier des Alpes. Aprés l'enterrement, ils rencontrent des extra-terrestres (qui étaient apparus quelques années auparavant et qui étudient la Terre) qui leur font un grand nombre de révélations : l'Orque est une forme de vie qui date des débuts de l'univers et qui a pour habitude de créer une vie intelligente sur des planètes, poussant les habitants (au bout de quelquels millions d'années) à fabriquer des centrales nucléaires à profusion afin de lui fournir du Præsidium. Les habitants sont ensuite exterminés. Killer est un être crée par l'Orque dans le but d'exterminer les terriens : il est formé de l'esprit d'un bébé mutant mort-né et du corps d'un accroc au Dragon Rouge, et n'existait pas avant sont prétendu retour à Paris ; tous ses souvenirs et les souvenirs des terriens se rapportant à lui ont été crées de toutes pièces par l'Orque. Dragon Rouge est une drogue vivante, composée d'excréments de l'Orque, distribuée par un personnage mystérieux qui a été suscité par l'Orque, et permet à l'Orque de surveiller ce qui se passe sur Terre à travers les yeux de ses consommateurs. Les mutants ont été créés par l'Orque afin de cacher dans la masse l'existence de Killer. Ce dernier, endossant le rôle de la Mort que l'Orque a conçu pour lui, se prépare à affronter cette dernière. Il doit malheureusement puiser dans l'énergie mentale des terriens pour anéantir son ennemie, blayant ainsi les humains de la surface de la Terre, car tel était le plan de l'Orque (qui n'avait cependant pas envisagé d'être tuée dans le processus). Heureusement, les extra-terrestres montrent à Killer une faille spatio-temporelle qui le mênera vingt ans plus tôt, et qui lui permettra de détruire l'Orque avant que celle-ci ne le crée. Du moins l'espère-t-il. Le roman s'achève sur une discussion où Bolgenstein prétend avoir rêvé toute cette histoire.

Les derniers jours de mai est nettement plus déjanté que Les futurs mystères de Paris, Killer étant à tout moment sur le point de sombrer dans la folie. On y retrouve cependant des éléments fondateurs de la série : la couche de Bolgenstein, Dragon Rouge et l'archétype aux yeux rouges, une variante de la Grande Terreur, les mutants (dont le Millénaire qui n'est pas un millénariste). La structure du roman aussi est typique, les groupes de chapitres étant séparés par des interludes narrant une intrigue parallèle. Et l'intrigue se déroule quarante-cinq ans après les événements de mai 68. Wagner, révolutionnaire ?

At the end of Interesting Times, Rincewing became stranded somewhere in XXXX, the Last Continent, but nobody cared. Now that the Librarian is sick, the Faculty of Unseen University desperately needs someone to help him and to replace him as the librarian. They quickly think of Rincewind. While looking for a professor of Geography, they arrived (through the bathroom window of this professor's rooms, which opens to another place and time) on a small island where a lonely god experiments with evolution, several thousands years before the present time. Meanwhile, Rincewind is being told by a strange kangaroo that he must help making rain on XXXX, where it hasn't for the past thousands of years, because of the UU wizards. Rincewind travels through the continent, trying to escape his forced quest, while events always push him back on track. While escaping the Watch (he was meant to be hangged for sheep theft), he arrives in large city where he meets the wizards of the local university of magic. Meanwhile, in the past, the other wizards sail from the island to the Last Continent, which is just being made by gods. With their help, he retrieves (from a cave below a local brewery) an artifact that the god from the past should have used for making the rain, but that was stolen by one of the wizards before the god turned them into stone for getting finally some peace. Rincewind also retrieves his fellow wizards from the same cave before it collapses (because it was never meant to exist). Finally, they all sail home to Ankh-Morpork.

Fourteenth volume in the Discworld series, Lords and Ladies has been published in 1992 by Terry Pratchett.

Lancre's three witches (Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick) are back from their adventures abroad just in time to notice that young wanabe witches (including Agnes Nitt) had been dancing around a circle of stones known as “the Dancers”, which are actually guarding a weak point in the fabric of spacetime through which elves (also called the Lords and Ladies) have invaded the reality many centuries ago. The two old witches decide not to tell Magrat about it, because she thinks that elves are nice (which they are obviously not, once you get to know them). Magrat is so upset that she decides to give up sorcery. She then discovers that King Verence, her fiance, has already organised most of their coming wedding, which is set to take place on midsummer's eve. Verence has invited a party from the Unseen University, composed of Ridcully, Stibbons, the Bursar (completely nevrotic now and under heavy dried frog pills treatment) and the Librarian. On their way to Lancre, they also pick up Casanunda). The has also ordered, from a famous theater company in Ankh-Morpork, a play (which is about elves), which is going to be performed by Lancre's Morris dancers, who decide to train on the hills, near the Dancers. Soon enough, the elves manage to get through and to invade Lancre. The Queen of the elves plans to marry Verence so the people will have to accept her as queen. While Granny gets lots in the forest with Ridcully (her first and only love, but that was a very long time ago), Nanny goes with Casanunda to visit the King of the elves to tell him what his wife has been recently up to, in the hope that he would do something against it. In the meantime, Magrat is alone in the castle with Shaws Ogg, its only guard (all the guests of the wedding went to see the play, but were hypnotised by the elves, only Magrat stayed at the castle because she was upset not to have been told about the elves). There is one elf in the castle (who was in a cell but managed to escape) and Magrat is trying to escape him. She finally ends up in the armoury, where she finds the armor of queen Ynci, the only queen of Lancre who was a warrior and not spending here time waving at people and doing tapestry. Magrat wears the armor and becomes another person. She manages to fight some of the elves. Finally, all the protagonists meet near the forest, where she tries to humiliate Granny. Granny seems to die under the attack of the Queen, just before the King of the elves arrives and make all the elves vanish. Everybody wakes up, except Granny. Nanny understant soon that Granny didn't actually die but managed to “borrow” a swarm of bees (she had done it earlier with single animals, but never managed to do it with bees), so that the Queen would not find her mind. Granny finally wakes up, Verence and Magrat get married, and everything is well that ends well.

Voici comment relier soi-même de manière simple une pile de papiers pour en faire un livre. Typiquement, j'utilise cette méthode pour relier des livres que j'imprime moi-même, comme par exemple ceux que Roland C. Wagner a mis en téléchargement libre. C'est tellement plus confortable que de lire sur un écran d'ordinateur !

J'imprime les livres de manière à placer deux pages A5 sur une page A4, en recto verso (donc quatre pages A5 sur une feuille A4), puis je coupe au milieu avec un massicot, en prenant les feuilles par paquets d'une dizaine. Il faut si possible couper le plus au milieu de la page possible, afin que la tranche du livre, une fois toutes les pages rassemblées, soit la plus régulière possible. On peut compenser une irrégularité d'un ou deux millimètres en remplissant avec de la colle, mais si le trou est plus profond, il faudra mettre de nombreuses couches de colle, ou utiliser une colle de type polyuréthane (PU) qui gonfle en séchant (je n'ai jamais essayé).

Matériel

Reliure

• colle blanche (à papier ou à bois, de type PVA)
• spatule à colle
• ficelle
• petite scie à dents fines (à métaux)
• deux lattes de bois ou une presse faite maison
• deux serre-joints

Couverture

• carton de couleur (260 g/m² par exemple)
• feutre (par exemple doré)
• règle métallique
• cutter
• crayon à papier
• plastique transparent autocollant

Ma presse

Elle se compose d'un morceau de contreplaqué (250 × 180 × 6,5 mm) un peu plus grand qu'une page A5 et de deux tasseaux (14 × 55 mm, 218 mm et 116 mm de long) collés sur la plache de manière à former un angle droit. Un deuxième morceau de contreplaqué (220 × 145 × 6.5 mm) vient recouvrir exactement l'emplacement entre les deux tasseaux.

On peut se passer de la presse et utiliser à la place deux lattes de bois pour serrer la pile de papier (voir les photos). L'intérêt de la presse est de pouvoir « taquer » le papier contre les tasseaux et avoir des pages les mieux alignées possibles. Sans la presse, il faut être à deux pour taquer les pages, placer les lattes puis les serre-joints.

Collage des page

Rassembler les pages (dans le bon ordre !) de manière à ce que les trois bords extérieurs des pages soient bien alignés. Ceci permet d'éviter de devoir couper les bords une fois la reliure achevée, chose impossible sans un massicot capable de couper droit une épaisseur importante (hors de prix pour un particulier). Serrer les pages ensemble soit en plaçant les deux lattes de part et d'autre de la pile de feuilles à 5mm du quatrième bord, soit en plaçant les feuilles dans une presse comme celle que j'ai fabriquée. Serrer avec les serre-joints.

Couper des encoches dans la tranche du livre à l'aide de la scie, sur une profondeur de 1 à 2 mm.

Enduire la tranche de colle blanche et placer un morceau de ficelle dans chaque encoche. Les morceaux de ficelle doivent dépasser d'un centimètre environ de chaque coté.

Laisser sécher la colle pendant 15 minutes environ, puis repasser une couche de colle. Laisser sécher 12 heures au moins.

Couverture

Découper un morceau de carton suffisamment grand pour couvrir le livre, puis le plier de sorte qu'il s'emboite sur le livre.

Écrire le texte adéquat sur la tranche (si on utilise un feutre doré à base de peinture, il faut laisser sécher le texte plusieurs minutes).

Tracer deux lignes à l'aide d'un objet fin et non tranchant de part et d'autre de la tranche sur l'extérieur de la couverture. Ceci permet à la couverture de s'ouvrir sans exercer de contrainte sur le collage près de la tranche. Ces lignes ont un nom technique, mais je ne m'en souviens plus.

Enduire l'intérieur de la couverture de colle, entre les deux lignes précédemment tracées et emboiter rapidement le livre dans la couverture. Cette étape est délicate, car si on met trop de colle, le carton gondole, et si on met trop peu, elle sèche trop vite. Placer le livre dans la presse afin de maintenir les parties collées sous pression.

Laisser sécher pendant plusieurs heures.

Découper un morceau de plastique transparent autocollant suffisamment grand pour couvrir la couverture et se rabattre sur l'intérieur de la couverture. Coller le plastique sur le livre.

Et voilà ! Le livre est suffisamment solide pour être lu plusieurs fois sans que les pages ne tombent.

Modifié le 10/12/2007: Un lien vers un autre tutoriel sur la reliure maison par Andrew Seltz. Il suggère en particulier de poncer la tranche du livre avant de l'encoler (avec un papier de verre à grain 200 ou 300).

J'ai mentionné dans mon article sur la reliure l'utilisation possible de la colle polyuréthane (PU). Je m'y suis enfin frotté, je le résultat est intéressant. Par rapport à l'utilisation d'une colle blanche classique (PVA, acétate de polyvinyle), voici ce que j'en pense:

Pour la PU:

• elle ne fait pas se gondoler le papier, contrairement à la PVA
• elle gonfle légèrement et donc remplit mieux les trous, en particulier elle s'insère entre les pages sur 5 mm et les fait mieux tenir entre elles
• elle fait une reliure assez souple (la PVA aussi, mais un peu moins et d'aspect plus « cassante »)

Contre la PU:

• elle tache le papier (du moins la mienne qui est jaunatre), alors que la PVA est bien blanche
• elle met très longtemps à sécher, même appliquée en couche fine (la PVA en couche fine sèche quasiment instantanément)
• elle reste liquide plus longtemps que la PVA, et donc si on en applique une couche épaisse (ce que je fais sur les reliures pour remplir les trous) elle coule facilement et colle le livre à la presse.
• elle ne se nettoie pas à l'eau mais à l'acétone

L'usage dira si la reliure à la PU tien mieux les pages que celle à la PVA. Wikipedia en Anglais mentionne que l'industrie du livre utilise de la colle à base de PU depuis quelques années.

Après avoir vaicu le dieu Azash et sauvé le monde, la réputation d'Émouchet fait qu'on l'appelle au secours depuis l'empire de Tamoulie, en extrême orient. Dans tous les royaumes de l'empire, des héros du passé resurgissent et poussent les populations à se rebeller. Comme l'empire ne peut pas demander de l'aide à un autre état, l'ambassadeur Oscagne, envoyé par l'empereur, propose qu'Ehlana se rende en visite officielle en Tamoulie avec Émouchet et une escorte. En chemin, ils se rendent compte par eux-même des désordres provoqués dans les royaumes, y compris en Lamorkand, dans l'ouest. Is apprennent que les dieux des trolls sont mêlés à cette affaire (ils semblent avoir réussi à s'échapper du Bhelliom), mais qu'ils ne sont pas les instigateurs de cette rebellion. Arrivés à Mathérion, la capitale de l'empire, ils déjouent une tentative de prise de pouvoir organisée par Krager, un ancien complice de Martel, bien connu d'Émouchet. Krager leur révèle que l'instigateur du complot visant à prendre le pouvoir sur tout le continent est Cyrgon, le dieu des Cyrgaï, un peuple aujourd'hui disparu.

Troisième tome des Enfants de Ji par Pierre Grimbert. Les enfants des protagonistes du Secret de Ji continuent leur voyage à la recherche de leurs parents qui ont été mystérieusement enlevés. Ils fuient le Grand-Empire et partent à la recherche d'Usul, dans l'espoir que le dieu pourra répondre à leur questions. Pendant le voyage, Niss développe ses talents d'Erjak avec l'aide de Bowbak, son grand père, et tente d'aider Cael à contrôler la Voix de Sombre qui le hante. Le coeur d'Eryne balance entre Ke'b'ree et Amanón et finit par se donner aux deux hommes l'un après l'autre. Eryne découvre aussi qu'elle possède le pouvoir d'Esthesia qui lui permettra (avec suffisamment d'entraînement) de lire les esprits ; Zejabel lui apprend tout ce qu'elle sait sur l'Esthesia de son temps passé au service de Zuïa. Cael s'entretient finalement avec Usul qui lui apprend que leurs parents sont au Jal (mais ne sait pas s'il s'agit de Dara ou Karu) et que l'Adversaire est parmi eux, mais la révélation qu'Usul lui fait que l'un d'entre eux trahira le groupe permet à la Voix de Sombre de prendre possession de son corps et il ne se souvient pas de la réponse du dieu. Leur seul espoir de retrouver leurs parents est de se rendre au Lu'san pour prendre des livres dans la bibliothèque de Zuïa qui permettront à Amanón de traduire des prophéties éthèques qui devraient leur permettre de retrouver leurs parents. Ils sont surpris par Zuïa qui leur apprend que l'Adversaire est l'enfant d'Eryne (qui ignorait jusque là être enceinte) avant de réussir à s'enfuir avec les livres qu'ils étaient venus chercher.

Deuxième tome de la Trilogie des joyaux par David Eddings. Émouchet et ses compagnons traversent le continent à la recherche du Bhelliom, poursuivis par un Fureteur, créature instectoïde contrôlée par Azash qui a le pouvoir de contrôler des humains, qu'elle utilise comme hommes de main. Le Bhelliom se trouvait sur la couronne du roi Sarak, tué cinq-cents ans auparavant dans une immense bataille pour contrer linvasion par les Zemochs des royaumes du Ponant. Nos héros remontent jusqu'à la tombe du roi en utilisant les histoires locales relatant ce qui s'est passé en divers endroits à l'époque de la bataille. Ils finissent par découvrir l'emplacement de la couronne, mais sont dans l'impossibilité d'y accéder. C'est finalement Ghwerig, le troll nain qui avait fabriqué le Bhelliom, qui s'en empare. Émouchet et ses amis suivent Ghwerig jusqu'à sa caverne, l'affrontent et finissent par mettre la main sur le Bhelliom.

Troisième tome de la Trilogie des joyaux par David Eddings. Émouchet a retrouvé le Bhelliom et l'utilise avec succès pour guérir la reine Ehlana de son empoisonement. La jeune reine reprend rapidement sa place sur le trône et force Émouchet à la demander en mariage. Émouchet s'en va ensuite à Chyrellos, capitale de l'Église élène pour tenter d'empêcher le primat Annias de devenir archiprélat. La ville est attaquée par les troupes de Martel, un pandion renégat de mèche avec Annias et Othas, l'empereur Zemoch et servant d'Azash. L'attaque réussint finalement à être repoussée, Annias s'enfuit et un nouvel archiprélat est élu. Émouchet et Ehlana se marient, puis Émouchet se lance à la poursuite d'Annias et Martel jusqu'en Zemoch, où l'attendent Otha et Azash dans le but de lui prendre le Bhelliom. Mais Émouchet est Anakha, celui-sans-destin dont les actes sont totalement imprévisibles, même pour les dieux. Émouchet défait Otha et tue Azash, puis jette le Bhelliom à la mer pour le faire disparaître à jamais.

Premier tome de la Trilogie des joyaux par David Eddings. Émouchet, le chevalier pandion, est de retour d'exil, prêt à reprendre sa place de Champion de la reine Ehlana. Mais cette dernière est frappée d'un mal mystérieux et Séphrénia la magicienne, faute de trouver un remède, a enchassé la reine, assise sur son trône, dans un bloc de cristal indéstructible. Émouchet apprend rapidement que le primat Annias a des vues sur le poste d'archiprélat, et est prêt à toutes les infâmies pour y parvenir. Émouchet et ses amis se lancent alors dans une quête pour un trouver un médecin capable de soigner la reine. Ils apprennent en chemin que la reine a été empoisonnée, que seul un objet magique millénaire, le Bhelliom, pourra la sauver. Il apprend aussi qu'il existe des relations entre Martel, un pandion renégat, Annias, le peuple Zemoch et son dieu maléfique Azash qui manipule tous ces derniers dans le but de prendre le contrôle du monde entier, et que la tentative de prise de pouvoir d'Annias n'est qu'une partie du plan destiné à causer le chaos.

Moist von Lipwig, Postmaster General of Ankh-Morpork is “asked” by the Patrician to become Master od the Royal Mint, restore the economy and find funding for the Patrician's grand plans for the city (the “Undertaking”). Moist's ideas are to get rid of the gold reserve, because it doesn't have any intrinsic value, and make paper money. At the same time, Moist's girlfriend Adora Belle finds an unknown number of sixty-thousand years old golems burried not far from Ankh-Morpork and who are slowly digging themselves out of their hole and coming to the city in a couple of days. Meanwhile Cosmo Lavish learns Moist secret (that he used to be a con artist who escaped somehow his death sentence) and wants to use this information to take back the Mint (the Lavish family used to own the Mint but lost it since the previous owner made her dog inherit all her shares and gave the dog to Moist for safekeeping). Moist then discovers that the Chief Cashier has over the years hidden the fact that the gold reserve was being spent by the Lavish (the cashier is a wereclown, born a clown but looking like a dull accountant by day, and was blackmailed). Soon after, the golems arrive in the city, all four thousand of them and take position to defend the city (what they were built for). Vetinari is afraid that the golems may destroy the city's economy (they work hard for no pay, there would be no work anymore), but Moist finds the way to give them order, and he orders them to burry themselves outside of the city. Eventually Cosmo Lavish is ridiculed by Moist in front of the Patrician and the truth about the stolen gold is found out. Moist decides to back the money with the golems, since they have a real intrinsic value.

When the King died, the two heirs, Prince Roland and Princess Elinor, started to fight for the throne. They tried to settle their fight with a battle between a bear and a wolf, but their abuse of magic destroyed the Psi Crystal through which Blue Moon, the God, used to send its wisdom to the eight people of Blue Moon (and incidentally created two mutants, half bear, half wolf). With the Crystal destroyed, the people of Blue Moon were not any more guided by their God and started to fight each other, the ones supporting Prince Roland, the others Princess Elinor (and changing sides from time to time). This situation has lasted for over a decade.

At the beginning of the story, the two most powerful families of the Buka, the pirates from the Western Sea, forged an alliance by marrying the son of Tai Marn and the daughter of Lo Tan. But The new couple is murdered soon after the wedding. Only one small girl recognizes some of the assailants as people of Blue Moon. The Buka want revenge and decide to take over the whole continent and kill all the people of Blue Moon. They soon attack the Hoax city of Sallanion, where live Pelenos (the captain of the city guard) and his twin brother Thelenos. Thelenos is soon asked to live the city to take part in a meeting in Blue Moon city with the Chosen of the eight people. He thus joins a company made of himself, Asha the Vulca, Gorgan the Terrah, Shining Star the Mimix, Iisilia-Aqua-Terz the Aqua, Kidda Shark the Khind, Cardus Nikkus the Pillar and Whistler the Flit. Their mission is to find the Heart of the Crystal, seemingly an additional shard of the Psi Crystal without which it is impossible to remake the Crystal, according the the message that Ordrac the Golden Dragon sent to the Chosen. But only by putting their feud aside they can reach their target, located in a tower in the land of the Hyla, beyond the Mountain of Immensurable Height. During their journey, they learn not to hate each other, and start to work as a team. They also learn that they are being followed by unknown people who try to kill them.

Meanwhile, the Buka attack on Sallanion cannot be withstanded, and Pelenos orders to flee the city after several days of fight, and a surprising meeting with Aqua (with whom they used to be at war) who helped them repelling the Buka for a while (the Aqua where actually seeking revenge for the destruction of their city, Nautilia). They plan to reach Theklis, but that city has been deserted already. On their way to Salanas, he main city of the Hoax' territory, the Hoax meet a group of fleeing Terrah with whom they join forces for a while.

The company finally reaches the tower of Caladura with the help of Lur-nan-Tok, a mutant sent by Tronknor, a Hyla who alerady knew of their mission (Ordrac had told him long ago). He also tells them that they are not the first company looking for the tower. Tronknor then leads them to the tower, where they are assaulted by their mysterious followers. The Hyla protects them and they manage to capture their leader Grease-Palm, an Inquisitor of Princess Elinor. They find around her neck a pendent that belonged to Lo Tan's wife, and which Lo Tan had given to her daughter on her wedding day; Grease-Palm had stolen the pendant befor killing the girl. The company finally enters the tower where they find just a large, cylidrical stone. They form a ring around the stone, and are transported to Blue Moon City, in the Palace of the King, where they meet some of the Chosen, alerted by the sudden increase in Psi power. Thelenos then understands that their company altogether forms the Heart of the Crystal, since they managed to overcome their feud and work together again.

The heroes eventually manage to convince Tai Marn to give up their vengeful invasion in exchange for the real murdered, Grease-Palm. Then they reconstruct the Crystal of Psi, briefly fight the Prince and the Princess (who schemed the Buka Invasion in order to weaken all the people of Blue Moon and turn them into her slaves (or something like that). Eventually, Ordrac comes back and Blue Moon City is once again bathed in Blue Moon's wisdom.

Sixième volume des Arcanes du Midi-Minuit publié en 2008. Jim a été arrêté à la fin de l'épisode précédent pour avoir laissé s'échapper une criminelle. En prison il s'accoquine avec un mafieux qui vient d'être transféré et organise son évasion. L'arrestation et l'évasion ont en fait été planifiés dans le but de recueillir des aveux du mafieux et de trouver qui est la taupe au sein du Service du Roi (il s'agit de la secrétaire du Commandeur, ce dernier est innocent même si tout le monde le déteste).

Dix-huitième volume des aventures de Blake et Mortimer publié en 2008 par Sente et Juillard. Mortimer souffre de maux de tête depuis son aventure en Antarctique. Son assistante lui montre un mystérieux anneau trouvé en Afrique, et dont le découvreur est atteint d'une maladie étrange. Mortimer prend contact avec une des ses amies, archéologue et part à la recherche de la grotte où l'anneau a été trouvé. La grotte cache le berceau de l'espèce humaine, système automatisé qui recrée des humains tous les trois-cents millions d'années environ dans l'espoir de créer une espèce qui ne s'autodétruira pas. L'expédition de Mortimer est suivie par un étrange individu qui se révèle être Olrik. Coup de théatre, il s'agit en fait de l'esprit de Mortimer prisonnier du corps d'Olrik, alors que l'esprit d'Olrik est prisonnier du corps de Mortimer, suite à l'aventure en Antartctique où les esprits des deux personnages avaient été séparés de leurs corps et mal réintégrés. Les protagonistes quittent finalement la grotte et oublient tout de leur aventure, tandis qu'Olrik est capturé par Blake pour permettre à Mortimer de réintégrer son propre corps.

Belisarius is a general in the army of the Eastern Roman Empire. In a previous adventure, he was given a living crystal coming from a distant future, Aide, who tries to change the path of history so that his people do not become slaves to a new kind of beings. Aide gives Belisarius visions of the future and together they fight the influence of Link, a representative of the other beings from the future. Link is controling the Malwa, a people from India, who tries to conquer Persia. Although Persia and the Romans (who at that time of history are mostly Greeks) have been enemies in the recent past, the Persians seek an alliance with Rome and especially with Belisarius to repell the Malwa invader. Belisarius and the Persian ambassador then move a Roman-Persian army to Mesopotamia. At the same time, Belisarius' wife Antonina is sent by the Empress Regent of Rome to re-establish Rome's domination over Alexandria. And in India, a rebellion led by the Empress Shakuntala tries to gather followers in order to repell the Malwa from the inside. There are two battles, and at the end, the Malwa are routed out of Persia. But Link already prepares a new invasion.

Le roi de Riva est assassiné avec toute sa famille par des envoyés de Salmissra sous l'influence de Zedar. Seul le jeune prince Geran a survécu, et Polgara entreprend de cacher Geran et tous ses descendants jusqu'à la naissance du Tueur de Dieu. Après quelques générations, Torak envahit le Ponant, et Polgara et son père vont arranger les événements de telle sorte que Brand, jouant le rôle de l'Enfant de Lumière affronte Torak en duel et le plonge dans le coma lors de la bataille de Vo Mimbre, conformément aux Prophéties. Polgara reprend son rôle de gardienne de la lignée de Riva, cachant les descendants principalement en Sendarie et en Arendie, les faisant passer pour des habitants normaux, ce qui ne va pas toujours facilement. Lorsque que Chamdar retrouve leur trace, ils déménagent et recommencent ailleurs. Peu de temps avant la naissance de Garion, Polgara est envoyée chez les Nadraks afin de faire se rencontrer le roi Drosta, Yarblek et le roi Rhodar. Puis elle retourne s'occuper de la lignée de Riva. Lorsque Garion nait enfin, ses parents sont tués par Chamdar, mais Garion est sauvé de justesse par Belgarath. Polgara l'emmène alors en Sendarie, à la ferme de Faldor.

Polgara et sa soeur Beldaran naissent alors que Belgarath est parti avec Cherek Garot-d'ours et ses fils reprendre l'orbe à Torak. Poledra leur mère meurt en couches et les deux jumelles sont élevées par Beldin. Autant Beldaran est une enfant exemplaire, autant Polgara fait tout pour se faire détester de son père. Elle est guidée par l'esprit de sa mère qui lui enseigne le contrôle de son pouvoir. À seize ans, Beldaran épouse Riva, et Polgara se métamorphose en jeune fille (presque) exemplaire en l'honneur du mariage de sa soeur. Elle se réconcilie avec son père, qui lui apprend à lire et à étudier, tandis que sa mère en secret continue son enseignement et la guide. Polgara se passionne pour la médecine et devient une experte dans le domaine, mais ses connaissances sont insuffisantes pour sauver sa soeur qui meurt de maladie. Polgara est ensuite chargée par Aldur d'enquêter sur les malversations en Arendie de Murgos déguisés en ambassadeurs Tolnédrains qui tentent de mettre le royaume à feu et à sang. Polgara passe six-cents ans en Arendie à maintenir la paix, et y gagne le duché d'Erat en remerciement. Elle révolutionne la société dans son duché en abolissant le servage, et laisse son duché devenir peu à peu le royaume de Sendarie. Polgara rencontre Ontrose, un de ses « chevalier protecteurs » et en tombe amoureuse. Hélas, Ontrose se fait tuer lors de l'invasion de Wacune par les Asturiens (sous l'influence des Murgos, encore une fois), événement que Polgara ne peut empêcher car il fait partie de ces Événements qui doivent se produire.

Polgara a pour tâche de cacher et protéger les descendants de Riva jusqu'à la naissance de Garion. Belgarath la surveille discrètement, tout en surveillant que tout se passe conformément aux prophéties dans les royaumes du Ponant. Un jour, il apprend de Beldin que Torak a rassemblé une armée gigantesque et vient détruire plus que conquérir les royaumes en passant par le Pont de Pierre. Belgarath met l'ancètre de Garion à l'abri dans la forteresse d'Algarie, car selon les prophéties, est est imprenable. Après un long siège, l'armée de Torak lève le camp et se dirige ver Vo Mimbre. Belgarath et Polgara parviennent à convaincre les Tolnédrains de joindre leurs forces aux Aloriens du nord, et Brand, assumant cette fois-ci le rôle de l'Enfant de Lumière affronte finalememt Torak après trois jours de siège de Vo Mimbre. Torak est blessé et plongé dans un profond sommeil, et l'armée de Torak lève le camp. Plus tard, Belgarath découvre l'existence de Chamdar, un Grolim (aussi connu sous le nom d'Asharak), qui veut entrer dans les bonnes grâces de Torak en reprenant l'Orbe et en tuant l'ancêtre de l'Enfant de Lumière. Il parvient à détourner l'attention de Belgarath et Polgara le jour de la naissance de Garion, et tue les parents de ce dernier, mais Belgarath arrive juste à temps pour sauver le bébé, qu'il place ensuite sous la garde de Polgara, à la ferme de Faldor en Sendarie.

Garath est un orphelin. Élevé par le dieu Aldur, il est rebaptisé Belgarath. Au fil des siècles, Aldur va accueillir davantages de disciples (Belzedar, Belkira et Beltira, Belsambar, Belmakor et Beldin). Aldur étudie aussi une pierre mystérieuse, l'Orbe, convoitée par son frère Torak. L'Orbe punit Torak de l'avoir volée, et lorsque Torak tente de s'en servir contre les autres dieux venus assiéger sa capitale et reprendre l'Orbe, le monde se retrouve fendu en deux. Belgarath, qui se transforme régulièrement en loup pour voyager, rencontre aussi une louve un peu particulière (elle vit plusieurs siècles et peut se transformer en chouette et en humaine, nommée Poledra) qu'il finit par épouser. Belgarath apprend aussi que Belzedar est passé à l'ennemi, devenant un disciple de Torak. Desespérés par cette nouvelle, Belmakor et Belsambar se suicident. Alors que Poledra est enceinte, Belgarath est envoyé par la Nécessité en Mallorée pour voler l'orbe à Torak. Elle est ensuite confiée à la garde d'un des fils de Cherek, Riva, qui va s'installer dans l'Île des Vents et y construire une forteresse pour protéger l'Orbe. Pendant l'absence de Belgarath, Poledra donne naissance à deux filles, Beldaran et Polgara, et meurt en couches. Beldaran épouse plus tard Riva et fonde ainsi la lignée des rois de Riva dont Garion est le dernier descendant. Beldaran meurt un jour, mais Polgara est une sorcière et vit avec son père durant des siècles. Ensemble, sur les ordres d'Aldur, ils manipulent les personnages importants et continuent de faire en sorte que l'Histoire se déroule de telle sorte que Garion puisse effectivement voir le jour. Lorsque le roi de Riva et sa familles sont empoisonnés par Salmissra (sous l'influence d'on ne sait encore qui), Belgarath et Polgara décident de cacher leur fils, qui a par chance survécu sans que les instigateurs du crime ne soient au courant, quelque part en Sendarie.

Vimes chases Carcer, a psychopath killer up to the roof of Unseen University. Suddenly, because of a storm during a magic experiment, Vimes and Carcer are moved back in time thirty years, at a time where Vimes was only a young lance constable in the Night Watch. The old Vimes assumes the identity of John Keel, an old seargent who had arrived in Ankh-Morpork the same day and who had, in the original History, taught young Vimes about how to be a good Copper. The real Keel has been killed by Carcer soon after his arrival in Ankh-Morpork and the current captain of the Treacle Mine Road watch house is gullible enough to listen to the Vimes from the future. Vimes also meets Lu-Tze the History Monk, who explains that he has to play the part of Keel and stop Carcer in order to patch up History. In the next days, Vimes plays his role, but turns the watchmen into good coppers who care about their jobs. He also fights the Unmentionnables, the secret police of the current Patrician. Carcer has, unsuprisingly, become a seargent in the Unmentionnables. Meanwhile, a revolution is preparing in Ankh-Moropork (Vimes knows about it, of course). Barricades are built in the streets, and Vimes does his best to keep the peace behind the barricades, so that the army (martial law has been declared) doesn't have a reason to attack them. In the evening, the patrician is assassinated (by Vetinari, a then young member of the Assassin's Guild), replaced by a new Patrician worth no better than the old one, who orders Carcer (now captain of the Patrician's guard) to kill Keel. Vimes and a handfull of his coppers and some civilans try to escape Carcer and his men. Many are killed, but as soon as Vimes has his hands on Carcer, Lu-Tze reappears, puts the real Keel's body where Vimes was, and sends Vimes and Carcer back to their original time. Carcer escapes while Vimes checks on his wife who is about to give birth. Sybil and the baby (called Sam also) are safe, and Vimes finally catches Carcer at the cemetary, near the graves of those who died thirty years ago fighting Carcer.

Jeremy is a neurotic watchmaker who has been hired by an Auditor (disguised as Lady LeJean, a human woman) to build a glass clock. This device would stop time completely in the whole multiverse, which would then a state of complete stability which is what the Auditors are trying to achieve. The previous attempt to build such a device made Time a prisoner of the clock, but the latter being imperfect, it exploded and shattered History. The Monks of History are the self-appointed guardians of History, and the most powerful of them, Lu-Tze (called the Sweeper, because he actually is a sweeper) has been ordered by the Abbot to prevent the new glass clock from being built. Lu-Tze and his apprentice Lobsang (who has a supernatural sense of dealing with time) travel to Ankh-Morpork where the watchmaker lives. They arrive an instant too late, the clock is being started by the Auditors (who have also taken human form). Meanwhile, Death, War, Pestilence and Famine, knowing that the end of the world is close, are preparing for the Apocalypse, while Susan, Death's grand-daughter, tries to fight the Auditors. She meets Lobsang, who got separated from Lu-Tze, and together with Lady LeJean they fight the Auditors (with chocolate, since the latter's brand new bodies can't handle the explosion of senses that happens when they eat chocolate). In the meantime, Lu-Tze meets Ronald Soak, the best milkman in Ankh-Morpork, who doens't seem to suffer from the lack of time. Soak happens to be the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse, Chaos, who was long forgotten. The five Horsemen fight the Auditors and drive them away. Lobsang is the son of Time and the Abbot, and is also a duplicate of Jeremy, the child of Time being born twice. While in Ankh-Morpork, Lobsang and Jeremy merge. Finally, Lobsang/Jeremy uses the monks' tools to put History back into shape.

William de Worde is the editor of the first newspaper in Ankh-Morpork. His sense of digging the truth leads him into investigating the apparent murder attempt by the Patriciant of his clerk. But several clues don't match. Soon William and the Watch try to find the Patrician's dog Wuffles, who is a witness to the whole crime. William is contacted by an anonymous informant named Deep Bone (actually Gaspode) who wants to sell him the whereabouts of Wuffles (the dog is actually hiding with Gaspode, Foul Ole Ron and their team). Meanwhile, the two henchmen (Mr Pin and Mr Tulip) who have been hired through Slant by the Comity to unelect the Patrician are trying themselves to find Wuffles in order to protect their operation and save their skin. William finally discovers that the Comity is led by his own father (with whom he doesn't really get along). The Patrician is finally freed from jail, and William gets his blessing to pursue his newspaper operations.

Maurice is a talking cat, leading a tribe of talking rats and a stupid-looking kid with a flute. Together they scam the small villages in Uberwald, simulating a plague of rats and getting the kid paid to “magically” leading them out of the village. On day, they arrive in a village already heavily plagued by rats, where the rats steal so much food that the prices have raised to incredible heights. But Maurice's rats notice that although there is many traps and much poison around, there is no single rat in town. The kid and the Mayor's daughter Malicia discover that the rat catchers have been stealing food from the cellars (these all seem to communicate with each other) and that they event breed the rats to get bigger and more aggressive ones and have them fight against dogs. The rats also discover that a Rat King (eight rats attached together by the tail, made by a rat catcher) has grown a magical mind of its own and tries to seize power in the city. Thanks to Maurice and its rats, the Rat King and the rat catchers are defeated, and Maurice manages to organise a treaty between the talking rats and the population, so that the latter feed the rats, and the former keep the city free of rogue rats and refrain from spoiling and raiding the food.

A copy of the Scone of Stone, an import dwarf relic, has been stolen from the dwarf bread museum at Ankh-Morpork. Soon after, a maker of rubber goods is found dead. Then Vetinari sends Vimes as an ambassador to Uberwald to represent the city at the coronation of the Low King. Vimes soon discovers that the situation in Uberwald is quite tense, where traditionalist dwarfs try to prevent the more liberal king to become the king. The plot involves werewolves (from Angua's family, who are nothing like her), vampires and of course the two factions of dwarfs. Although nobody would admit it to Vimes at first, the original Scone of Stone has been stolen, even though it was physically impossible. The Scone is of course an essential item in the coronation ceremony. While Vimes slowly finds elements of answer to the mysterious theft, he is imprisonned by the dwarfs for an alleged attempt against the life of the future Low King, escapes thanks to a vampire, ambushed by Wolfgang, Angua's brother, and saved in the nick of time by Angua and Carrot who came to Uberwald on their own. Vimes then forces Angua's mother to give him the copy of the Scone and brings it back to the dwarves, where it is authenticated as the real Scone, to Vimes' amazement. The future king explains that the relic had been destroyed an re-baked sevaral times over the past centuries (it would not have resisted the passage of time anyway), and that this copy is as good as the original (which had been reduced to dust in order to make make dwarves believe it had been stolen).

The newly born princess of Lancre is going to be baptised soon, but Granny Weatherwax's invitation got stolen by a magpie and the old witch, believing she is not invited, decides to leave Lancre forever, since Nanny, Magrat and Agnes make a perfect trio of witches. Meanwhile, Verence trying to be a modern king has invited vampires to Lancre, and the vampires have decided to stay and take over the kingdom. And to make it harder, the old recipes againts the vampires (garlic, daylight and so on) don't work on these modern vampires. The three witches manage to find Granny and convince her to help them, but she got bitten by one vampire and is going to turn into one herself. Or is she? Granny knows how to conceal part of her mind in anything living. Nanny believes she hid in the baby, Agnes believes she did in her own mind… Since even a good old fashioned mob doesn't succeed in getting rid of the vampires, the witches must flee from Lancre and, with the help of Igor, the vampires' servant who doesn't like his too-modern masters, arrive in Uberwald, in the vampires' family castle. The witches fight the vampires in the every corridor until Granny finally arrives at the castle and explains that she hid part of her mind in the vampire Count's blood, effectively Weatherwaxing him, instead of her being vampirised. A phoenix (natural predator of vampires), found by Granny in Lancre gets rid of the modernist count, and finally everything is well that ends well.

The moon has been mysteriously replaced with another one, much larger, red and covered with water, land and a breathable atmosphere. At the same time, a blue ring has appeared in the sky in front of Malenfant and Emma's jet plane. Emma is sucked into the ring just after ejecting and is transported to the surface of the Red Moon. She encounters strange hominids, Homo Erectus called the Runners, and Homo Neanderthal called the Hams who both speak some English, if only single words for the Runners (there are also other, more primitive hominids called the Elves and the Nutcracker). Life is hard but she manages to survive. Meanwhile on Earth, Malenfant manages to convince NASA to send him and Nemoto to the Red Moon in a rocket. After landing, they meet an Englishman from a parallel Earth who has been there for years, living with some of his friends and Hams. All hope of going back to the Earth disappears when the Red Moon shifts again from one parallel universe to another. But from this new Earth comes a group of Homo Superior (later nicknamed Deamons) who want to understant who is behind the Red Moon's travel, and what is its purpose. Nemoto meets them first, after splitting with Malenfant who wanted to find his wife. In the meantime, Malenfant has met another group of Homo Sapiens called the Zealots who have organized around a religious fanatic who wants to expand and conquer the whole Moon and use Hams and Runners as slaves. Malenfant is prisoner of the Zealots and has been tortured to death when Emma finally goes to his rescue with the help of her Ham friends, but he dies soon after. With Nemoto and the Deamons they enter the crater of the giant volcano, obviously artificial, and they learn that the Red Moon has been made by humans from the future who have forced the creation of mutiple universes. In every universe where there was no intelligent species, they have used the moon to take samples of homonids from one universe and move them to another one.

2020. Reid Malenfant, a former NASA astronaut discovers with the help of Nemoto, a Japanase astronomer living in a lunar colony, the presence of aliens in the asteroid belt. A probe sent there proves their presence, and Malenfant conjectures that they must have arrived into the solar system through a gateway, which is most probably located at the focal point of the Sun's gravity field. He launches a solo mission to this point, where he actually finds a gateway, goes through it, and meets the aliens called the Gaijin. They take him for a long journey across a large portion of the galaxy, using the network of gateways to show him many worlds, most of which have either a rudimentary form of life, or have been sterilized by an unknown cause. A gateway jump is no faster than lightspeep, and Malenfant therefore spends hundreds of years travelling. Meanwhile, on Earth, Nemoto charges Madeleine Meacher, a weapon smuggler, to be the next star traveller with the Gaijin. The Gaijin again take her to many worlds, without her really understanding what they want to show her. Most of the story decribes the evolution of the solar system, first the lunar colony finding oxygen and other vital elements by digging to the core of the moon, the Earth regressing and eating up most of its resources while the Gaijin fiddle with DNA to re-create extinct species. Some time later, the Earth suffers from a new ice age, while the moon colony is dying. Meacher takes australian aboriginals to colonize Triton. Malenfant comes back to Earth where he discovers that Nemoto is still alive and manipulating him again. Malenfant ends up on Io with a colony of Neanderthal before disappearing again. Finally, Meacher is contacted by Nemoto (now 1700 years old) to warn the inhabitants of the solar system that another alien specie called the Crackers are on their way to turn the Sun into a supernova, their way to get enough energy to expand and fly to the next star, where they will do the same and so on. Now the remnants of human descendants (and Nemoto) are on Mercury, the last human colony, and manage to defeat the Crackers before they distroy the Sun. Meacher leaves to Io and finally finds Malendant. They are both (along with Neanderthals) dematerialized and stored on a 10 cm long ship heading for the center of the galaxy. The Gaijin have discovered that binary star systems turning into neutron stars explode at more or less regular intervals, delivering a huge amount of gamma and cosmic rays, sterilizing all life in a radius of thousands of lightyears, preventing any life form to evolve enough to actually become able to colonize the galaxy. Before a previous sterilization took place, an unknown species had started to build a device that would prevent one specific binary star to sterilize this quadrant of the galaxy. A coalition of current species is working on the device, but internal dissensions prevent them to complete it. The Gaijin need human's sense of self and therefore of self sacrifice for a greater good in order to unite the coalition long enough to complete the task.

While on their way back home from their honey moon, Miles, accompanied by Ekaterin, is sent to Graf Station in Quaddie-space to diplomatically solve an incident involving soldiers from a Barrayaran ship escorting a Komarran transport. On the station, Miles meets his old friend Bel Thorne, who is working as an official there as well as an ImpSec agent under cover. Bel helps Miles in his attempt to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the Barrayaran ship's security officer, which is the source of the whole mess. Miles' attention is soon attracted by a mysterious Betan hermaphrodite, using the Komarran transport to carry a thousand foetuses in uterine replicators. Just after meeting it, Miles, Bel and the herm barely escape an attack by a mysterious person. The perpetrator is found later, and happens to be a smuggler who helped the herm to transport the uterine replicators from one ship onto the Komarran transport. The herm poisoned his crewmates, and the smuggler seeks revenge. Miles then discovers that the Betan herm is actually a Cetagandan Ba who has stolen a part of the yearly production of Cetagandan made by the Star Creche. His goal was to create his own empire with him as an emperor. Miles manages to prevent a war between Cetaganda and Barrayar, where the Ba had planted fake evidence of Barrayar's involvment in the plot. Eventually, Miles and Ekaterin go back home, just in time to witness the birth of their children.

Gutenberg rentre à Strasbourg après avoir passé près d'un an à Avignon où il a rencontré un maître du poiçon, dans l'espoir de résoudre ses problèmes liés à la mise au point de l'imprimerie. À son retour, il apprend que son associé, Lorentz Beildeck a disparu sans laisser de traces, son logement a été saccagé et un menuisier avec lequel il avait travaillé est mystérieusement assassiné juste avant que Gutenberg ne puisse le rencontrer. Gutenberg reçoit des fioles contenant du sang humain, probablement celui de son associé en guise d'avertissement. Il finit par apprendre que Beildeck est un hussite (de Jean Hus, réformateur d'avant la Réforme), dont la communeauté ne cesse de grandir à Strasbourg et dont les membres sont pourchassés par l'Inquisition. Cette dernière s'est associée avec la corporation des enlumineurs et copistes pour tenter d'empêcher l'avênement de l'impression, dont la plupart des acteurs sont justement des hussites. Parmi les inquisiteurs se trouvent un espion du roi de France qui parvient à les convaincres de ne pas exécuter sommairement Beildeck, mais ce dernier est finalement retrouvé mort par Gutenberg, probablement assassiné par la corporation des copistes. Dépité, Gutenberg quitte Strasbourg et retourne à Mayence pour continuer son travail et finalement imprimer sa première Bible.

Gregor's wedding is coming soon. Mark comes back from Beta through Escobar with a new friend, a mad scientist who has invented butter bugs, eating any kind of organic waste and producing both human-edible food and compost. Meanwhile Miles tries to court Ekaterin without her knowledge (because she is still in mourning) and invites her to a family dinner. The dinner turns into a nightmare when the guests are told they are eating bug butter based food, while the mad scientist tells the Koudlekas about their daughter's relationship with Mark, followed by Illyan asking loudly to Miles how long he has been courting Ekaterin, and ends with Miles proposing accidentally to Ekaterin. Ekaterin storms out just when Miles' parents are coming back from Sergyar earlier than expected. Meanwhile, two political schemes are going on within the counts for the control of two Districts, and one faction starts rumors about Miles' role in the death of Ekaterin's husband on Komarr. Some amount of scheming and one deceased count's sister changing gender surgically in order to become a legal male heir later, Ekaterin proposes to Miles during a session of the Counts' assembly in order to disprove Miles' responsibility in the Komarr incident, and Gregor finally gets married.

Eleventh book of the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, published in 2005. In this book, Mat Cauthon gets married to Tuon, daughter of the nine moons and probably future Empress of the Seanchan. Perrin rescues Faile and others from the Shaido, who, after losing Sevanna to the Seanchan, decide to go back the the Three-Fold Land and never leave it again. Rand and others get attacked by thousands of trollocs and myrdraals; soon after Rand falls into a trap set by one of the Forsaken and looses a hand (but the Forsaken is made prisonner). Elayne manages to end the siege of Caemlyn, rally enough Houses to her in order to become the new queen, and to arrest several black ajah aes sedai. Finally, Egwene, who had been kidnapped by Elaida's followers is back in the White Tower as a novice, but slowly plants seeds of discord between aes sedai and Elaida.

The latter falls in love with her, for as much as an elemental god can fall in love with a mortal, and starts building itself a human body. Tiffany continues to learn witchcraft with Miss Treason, and after her death, goes on at Nanny Ogg's, sill trying to hide from the Wintersmith. Tiffany is also acquiring some of the powers of the Summer Lady. When winter the becomes very hard and extends when sprint should already have arrived, she returns to her parent's place. Meanwhile, the Mac Nac Feegles, who have sworn to protect Tiffany, their wee big hag, following the instructions of Granny Weatherwax, go find Roland, Tiffany's not-exactly-boyfriend and soon-to-be heir of the local castle, train him to be a hero, and lead him to the Underworld to bring back the real Summer Lady. While fighting the Wintersmith, Tiffany is taken by the Wintersmith who takes her to his castle. She manages to vanquish it by kissing it and melting its body and its castle, just at the same time as Rolands comes out of the Uderworld with the Summer Lady. Spring finally arrives, the Morris Dance takes place, and everything's well that ends well.

An old priest is found dead, a note written in an ancient language tucked between his lips and arsenic impregnated grease under his fingernails. The curator of the Dwarf Bread Museum is found dead as well. And the Patrician is being slowly poisoned with arsenic. The Watch is investigating, while the head of the guilds scheme together to find a new ruler, a ruler they would control (and it seems that Nobby Nobbs is the right choice, since he is an (illegitimate) descendant of the Earl of Ankh). A bit later, the golems of Ankh-Morpork start to behave weirdly, some of them trying to destroy themselves, leaving notes about being ashamed. Three investigations are being led at the same time by Commander Vimes and his men. They finally discover that the golems had tried to build a king for themselves, they baked it in the large oven of the Dwarf Bread Museum and went to the priest for the words to put in his head. But they put too many commands and the golem became crazy, starting to get rid of evicence of his creation, hence the two first murders. He then had been sold to a candle maker who was involved in making arsenic candles sold the the palace of the Patrician; the candles where meant to be used exclusively by Lord Vetinaro in his office. The brain behind this scheme is a vampire, the head of the heraldic society of Ankj-Morpork. People are to him like cattle and his genealogy books like stock registers. He wanted to better control the breeding of the influencial families.

The Auditors hire Mr. Teatime the assassin to kill the Hogfather. On Hogswatchnight, Death replaces the Hogfather, because someone has to fill the stockings, drink the sherry and leave sooty footprints in front of the fireplace. Meanwhile, at Unseen University, strange gods or fairies appear when someone mentions their existence, particularly the Verruca Gnome, the Eater of Socks and Bilious, the God of Hangovers. They appear because since the disappearance of the Hogfather, there is free belief around, materializing in any kind of plausible divinity. Susan, Death's granddaughter, meets Bilious while she's trying to understand why his grandfather is playing the role of the Hogfather. While investigating with his help the disappearance of Violet, one of the Tooth Fairies' employees, she discovers that Teatime has found a way to enter the world of the Tooth Fairy (following the man who delivers the collected teeth to the Tooth Fairy) and uses the childrens'teeth to control them (that's how, I suppose, he has made them disbelieve in the Hogfather and made him disappear by lack of believers). Teatime was trying to reach the real Tooth Fairy when Susan stops him and returns him to the real world. She then meets the Tooth Fairy who is actually the promordial Bogeyman, who reconverted in collecting children's teeth in order to keep some amount of control over them and continue to instillate fear in their hearts. Then Death comes to pick her up and asks her to save the Hogfather (gods never really die) before the Auditors delete him for good. Once she has saved him, Death takes her back to the real world, where she manages to kill Teatime before he kills Death (he planned to use Death's own sword that he stole form Susan in the house of the Tooth Fairy). After that, all the extraneous fairies disappear.

Huitième volume de la série De cape et de crocs où nos héros trouvent enfin le Maître d'armes, bretteur au long nez parlant en alexandrins, qui finit par accepter de reformer son régiment de cadets (ils sont seulement trois mais valent chacun dix hommes) pour aller défendre la capitale de la lune contre l'assaut prochain par les troupes du Prince Jean, aidé du capitan Mendoza. L'assaut est terrible et laisse nos héros dans une situation desespérée.

Dix-huitième volume de la série XIII, La version irlandaise est un aparté qui raconte la relation entre Seamus O'Neil alias Kelly Brian, membre de l'IRA et réfugié aux États-Unis et Jason Fly, son meilleur ami. L'IRA voulait forcer Brian à espionner pour eux à Cuba après avoir éliminé Fly (qui va se faire embaucher par le FBI et qui connaît trop bien Brian), mais c'est lui qui se fera tuer. Giordano, patron de la CIA force alors Fly à endosser l'identité de Brian (sous peine de le faire accuser du meurtre de Brian qui n'a eu pour témoin qu'une seule personne, elle aussi agent de la CIA).

Dix-neuvième et dernier album de la série XIII, Le dernier round voit les protagonistes rentrer aux États-Unis après la révélation par un journaliste de la véritable identité de XIII, des liens entre Giordano et l'ancien président. Giordano tente de les faire assassiner, mais la tentative échoue et c'est lui qui se fera assassiner, non sans avoir été auparavant entendu par une commission d'enquête.
